We don't actually have any wingers really: Malouda is an attacking midfielder; Kalou is a striker; Anelka is a striker; Sturridge is a striker; Lukaku is a striker; Benayoun is a number 10; Kakuta is a number 10. The only time any of them get near the touchline is when they're subbed off!

Also, Mata is probably better described as an attacking midfielder than a pure winger, given that he drifts a lot

its going to go well.

He would rip up the SPL, it would be a shot term effort a la Keane and Bellamy though.

Pointless and slightly embarrassing for a club of that stature IMO as Robbie Keane and Bellamy were.

True true, he could.

For his sake, i hope he goes go to the SPL. He deserves to play 25+ games a season (starting).

I think Lawwell may go to about £40k-50k a week at Celtic for the right player. That leaves one huge deficit to be made up!

If stokes and hooper are getting 20 goals each in the SPL there not much incentive to push the boat out anyway.

He's the only one to have any experience on the left, and tbh.. He's the only one I trust to play out of position, and not make a total balls of it!

mascherano didnt have any experience, they are professional footballer's they should be able to play a number of positions near their base position okay enough.

take those twins at man utd, they are both left backs, right backs, right wingers and left wingers.

take zhirkov, he can play left back, left mid and left winger.

any professional footballer should be able to play in at least 2/3 positions apart from goalkeepers, it's not as if they are playing a completely different game.

rooney getting played left mid in champions league final, ronaldo moved to single striker role.

if they cant, they should sign me i can play anywhere including goal and i'll do it for £20K a week :p:D

if spurs sign diarra and get rid of modric, that will be amazing for them, diarra is a very underrated player, sure he doesnt do much apart from get stuck in, but he is very good at it and certainly kicked the **** out of barca in one of their games.

The twins dont count cos no-one is ever sure who is playing and what shirt they are wearing!!!

Any player can play a number of positions up to a point but at the very top level it shouldnt be the case.

Yes, Rooney can "do a shift" on the wing but against the top full back he should come up short because he shouldnt be as good as a top winger.

Gary Neville started as a central defender and Scholes was a striker but players need to settle in one position that suits their strengths if they are at the top teams.

In what way is signing a player who "doesnt do much apart from get stuck in" a good move as a replacement for Modric?

You can't put a Centre half on the left, and expect him to play aswell as a left back.

Mata to Chelsea is a real shock, I thought that Arsenal were having him but I guess the sale of Fabregas must have put him off.

Pretty gutted that we are losing out on Mata. We are so in need of good players yet we miss this chance.

Arsenal agree a deal in principal with Lille for midfielder Eden Hazard worth £23m - but nothing will be signed until the future of Arsenal's Champions League aspirations for this season are known.

I hoipe this is true because that sounds sound like a good price. Would have been sweeter if Mata was included too. I still don't think we would be back on an even playing field with those two but it would have helped.

I don't like the waiting for the CL reason though, sign him now and he could play in it. It is worth the gamble, we need to be in the competition or fighting for it next year if we miss out.

completely different types of player - if anything Diarra is a stand-in for Huddlestone rather than Modric (both much better quality players than the average Diarra)

Well that and Arsenal never spend over £15m so cant of been that much of a shock, Im gutted we didnt get him always rated Mata but would still be nice to see him in league long as he doesnt do well ever vs liverpool im happy :)

Will Lille really sell us their two best players in one season? I guess it's not impossible, we do it all the time.....

Mata to chelsea would be fantastic! :D We weren't linked with him at all until a few days ago but he would definitely strengthen the team. Now only modric to come and we will have done some very good business this summer. :)

Still would have liked to see the back of Mikel, Kalou, Anelka, Turnball and Hilario

Mikel will be decent backup for Romeu when he starts playing. Anelka could have definitely been sold though.

Turnball and Hilario are poor but we need Turnball for the homegrown rule and hilario's ok as a second keeper. We did sign courtois as cech's future replacement but it's better that he's getting first team action in athletico right now.

Kalou...well, no comment. :p

Mikel isn't a decent back up to Josh McEachran! He has gone backwards as a player and all the fuss in getting him wasn't worth it, he would have been better if he had stayed with United.

I don't know if that Romeu will be able to cope with the Premiership.

Courtois could have got 1st team football here with Cech out for a month, why didn't they put a recall situation in the contract?!?!?!

I would much rather see Connor Clifford given a chance
