If Wenger is sacked I predict more big name players leaving, a manager merry go round, consistent 5/6th place finishes for years to come with the occasional 4th and an even longer period of obscurity. Tottenham basically! However the grass is always greener.

Sacking Wenger is suicide imo.

No its not. If Wenger is the best manager arsenal can get then what does that tell u abotu the current state of managers around the world? It states how managers around the world are complete rubbish if Wenger the almightly manager with no trophies for 6 years is regarded as the best manager.

Keeping Wenger is Suicide. Look at arsenal now. Once we get dumped out of the CL tonight and we dont buy a player, that would further back my claim that wenger should be sacked

Or maybe getting knocked out of the CL this early will act as a wake up call for some of the players/staff. The lack of mid-week games could also work in our advantage in the PL as everyone that's a threat to us will be busy playing mid-week while we rest/train. It could also help with injuries and fatigue.

Wishful thinking.

Mate, beating Barca diddnt even motivate us, Losing to a relegated team in a carling cup final ALSO diddnt wake us up. what in gods name did u get the idea that us losing tonight is a wake up call?

K1LL, where's this optimism come from?

Arsenal have to buy players surely, I mean it's unthinkable that they can go in to this season with the team they have with the amount of money now in the kitty? The team that played Liverpool was the worst Arsenal team I can remember.

Of course we have to buy players, Wenger has said as much himself and I'm confident we will add at least two players before the end of the window. The team against Liverpool was missing a few players due to injury and a few due to suspension and I think it was a 50/50 game until we got the red card, if we drew or if we lost that game later in the season nobody would have said anything. Having said that though Wenger reminds me of myself when I was in uni, having weeks/months to sort things out but always leaving it until the night before and then rushing like mad. :p

Or maybe they want to keep him, expecting him to gain more attention in the future therefore commanding a bigger transfer fee....or better still he will want to go to a club that actually wins trophies and not become also rans yr in yr out.

Can't say I agree with that at all. Wenger still has tremendous pull, especially in France and a lot of young French league players would jump at the chance to play for us.

I fully disagree. Modric is good, but £10m more than Nasri? No way.

but the club would probably need to pay Modric less than the reputed £185k /week Nasri is getting - so over 4 or 5 years the club would probably be paying less in total for Modric:)

Modric and Nasri are also hard to compare, Nasri usually operates further up the pitch and I'm not sure he could be one of a central two in a 4-4-2

Totally agree - but imo that makes Modric even more valuable as he would fit / work with more types of formation

And yet we were on top at that point in the game where we lost a player against Liverpool's big signings (Liverpool better in first half).

I don't see the point in Arsenal now spending £50-60mil. We have to realise that we cannot compete with Man City, who can effectively field two great teams, ManU and Chelsea. Fans need to realise that winning a trophy for the 17 other clubs in the PL is going to come down to luck. That's just how it is. We are one of those 17 clubs.

What we should have done though is ensure that we finish 4th next season and qualify for this years CL. We haven't done enough to achieve that so far though which really is a ridiculous situation.

Once the 'nice style' of football runs out, what will arsenal have apart from new stadium? Arseanl need to wake up fast because they are liverpool of two seasons ago. Few and bad signnings and a sense that cl football is a 'right'. Its early days but arsenal haven't won yet and lost to a direct cl rival.

Perhaps, but look at where Liverpool are now, a lot of people are touting them as top 4 finishers and vastly improved

Thats the problem really, it doesn't matter if Rennes accept a offer or not, if the player doesn't want to join in the first place. At the moment theres 3 flat out better teams in the UK, of which potentially 2 of them could do with a new defensive mid(utd and chelsea), and Liverpool appear to have a lot more ambition than Arsenal at the moment, a pretty convincing 2-0 win away only helps support that view.

IF Utd, Chelsea, Real, Malaga next year, could all be looking for DM's, not to mention other teams in France, Germany, Holland, etc, who would generally be in the CL every single year, why would someone choose Arsenal right now when there are other options.

The general going after of bigger name and expensive players, I'm not against it but I'm not for it. For just about every sub 40mil player, theres a guy barely any worse who just isn't hyped up who will cost sub 10mil, its always been that way. With the amount of players we've lost/are losing, why aren't we picking up a bunch of cheap up and coming players, rather than up to 15mil english over hyped players. We still need to get shot of 4-5 truly awful players who have been dragging the team down for years, on top of the 4-5 players we have lost/are losing who now need replacing.

2-3 signings isn't even going to get us back to where we were end of last season.

Lets say the obvious area's of improvement last season were, CB, left wing, right wing, DM, instead we've sold ACM, left back, left wing, right back, and basically got shot of a couple strikers. We've replaced a right back(with someone less good, so far), we've got to sign 4 more players just to have the same numbers, (though the two we've signed are significantly worse than what we had) just to be close to where we were. We STILL need to improve those other 4-5 spots in the teams. Its a joke.

Well done for making excuses, that are complete bull. Firstly, City haven't had money since 2006 when we hit our decline, and they weren't in the top 4 till last year, so what about our decline in the past 5 years that had nothing at all to do with City?

What about Utd spending 30-40mil less on wages a season than Chelsea, and beating them to the title more often than not. What about when we beat Utd to the title, with a similar gap in our wages spending to them, to what there is now?

Yes we can compete, so what if City have two great teams, firstly, they don't, they have one great team and a team of people Arsenal used to look down on as not good enough, they can still only play one team every game. They've also massively massively overspent on most of their players, that doesn't make those players massively better than what can be bought cheaper, it just makes them suckers.

Up till 2 years ago the only thing stopping us winning titles was Wenger, the squad was good enough, now Wenger has completely demolished the squad, and it was over 6 years, not one transfer window, this has just been the biggest and worst, even then we've only sold THREE first team players, the team is a shambles, it isn't because 3 players are left and the other 8 are all brilliant.....

I don't expect us to win titles, but to pretend we can't because City overspend on everything they do is retarded. You said they have two great teams, lets assume thats correct, is there only 22 great footballers in the world? No, horsecrap, we've had a bunch of their players, and we bought most of them for very very little....... theres a new Toure out there, and a new Clichy, who are cheap and not well known yet, thats how football has always worked. City got Kompany for 5mil, how much did Utd pay for Smalling, Fabio, Rafael, Hernandez, Vidic, Jones even wasn't insane money, Young is cheap at 16mil.

Sorry but Arsenal CAN afford to have bought all those players, and we'd be a better team if we had, to say we can't afford to compete, when Utd has beaten both Chelsea and City while spending VASTLY less in the same time, proves how utterly ridiculous that is.

We've never outspent Utd, yet we have beaten them, nothing has changed there AT ALL. Beyond a certain level of spending, and beyond a certain level of sustainable income, theres very little difference in the quality of players. We've been paying Denilson, what Young has been on for most of the last 5 years.......

Money isn't the issue, Arsenal have been holding on to crap players, while losing our best players, its got smeg all to do with money, and everything to do with a manager who couldn't see Denilson was never the right option.

So Arsenal sack Wenger. Who do they replace him with?

But that's my point. I don't see a replacement.

Unless I misunderstand you and we're agreeing with each other :p

Is Nasri some kind of retard? He's said he went to City partly because City fans are more passionate. Now, that may or may not be true, but why even say it!! He was on thin ice with gooners anyway, but redeemed himself slightly with his efforts against Liverpool. Now I would think every Arsenal fan would gladly shoot him.

A little bit of respect wouldn't go amiss. Cesc/Henry/Vieira/Flamini/etc. have always given Arsenal the respect due for progressing their careers. Obviously this little **** couldn't wait to get out of London and stick the knife in.

Good riddance.

Clichy/Nasri both idiots to go to City anyway i mean i cant even see them starting allot infact Clichy hasn't yet i don't think, IMO Both of them did it for money.

Personally i hope the pair of them flop big time for City...Clichy was rubbish for us, in no way was he a suitable replacement for Cashley Cole so no big loss losing him.

Nasri is just a little arrogant french knob...he had run ins with Gallas when he played for us and also gave Henry a bit of lip as well...talented player but absolutely no loyalty from him...good riddance to the pair of them.
