****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

I only use SD card for movies storage. All CWM backups and so on go on internal memory as that is never touched by resetting/wiping/rom installs etc.

I store my nandroid backup on my windows PC as it's usually a large file, you can always mount USB from within cwm's menu.

Anything else you'd recommend?

usb jig. 99p from china, allows you to boot into Odin recovery, gets rid of the warning triangle at boot, resets the binary counter and will make it appear like you've never used a custom kernel should you send it away for repair.

What keyboard do you guys use? Other than the Samsung one? Any recommendations?

I've tried many, and always end up going back to:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.moo.android.inputmethod.latin.free&hl=en

This is NOT the same as the standard samsung one.

Yeah but what if you want to try out a new ROM or restore from a backup if something goes wrong when you're not at home :p

One ROM I had GPS issues in London so I restored a backup of a working ROM there and then via CWM and all was good.

Swiftkey X/Thumb Keyboard(both paid)/Gingerbread(free I think) are the most popular ones I think. I use Swiftkey X personally as I got it free (as well as Thumb Keyboard) from Amazon.

Edit: The Gingerbread one is actually the one loltim linked "Keyboard from Android 2.3", everyone just refers to it as Gingerbread keyboard so I'd assumed it was called that :p.

Right... Then my mission this weekend is to stick on a custom ROM.

Recommendations? Don't really know where to look or what is out there.

I keep meaning to order one of these but haven't got round to it yet. I do indeed have a little yellow triangle on boot :o

I'm currently running stock KJ3, no problems so far, battery life is actually far better than CM7:eek:

21hrs on battery with 47% remaining, 38% display, 16% voice calls.

You should try leomars rom though, on xda.

I use VillainROM, so I don't have to worry about flashing a new ROM :p. Kernel/modem issues can be resolved easily enough since they're small downloads :).

:D

oh mrk, i tried out leomar's checkrom the other day, all going ok, till I downloaded something from one of the menus, might've been something Dive or Kies related, can't remember. Anyway upon restart I got a million TW force closes and it spazzed out, and I had to do a restore. What did I do wrong?

Nah, I'm using Siyah Kernel 2.2beta11 atm. That kernel should be exactly the same as Speedmod Kernel though, only with better battery life since the only thing he's changed is undervolting everything by 50mV :). I already undervolt my CPU by 75-125mV depending on the speed, although that seems completely stable so just changed it to a minimum of 100mV undervolt and will see how it goes :).

Edit: Just noticed I said I underclocked my CPU instead of undervolted :o.

I don't use CheckROM but I imagine something framework related was replaced thus causing the problem!

Yes, the one before CheckROM which is now end of line as CheckROM supersedes it!

LeoMar Revolution 2.7.1 works flawlessly though so I saw no reason to update it. I just try different kernels from time to time to gauge battery drain.

Will it not be easier this time as the Galaxy Nexus has all the same (and more) hardware features as the SGS2.

I think the main thing that doesn't work with all these 2.3 ROMS is the HDMI output (I guess because this is not part of 2.3 Open Source Code but is added by some manufacturers), but they can just use the code from the GN as that has HDMI output as well?

I suppose a better way to explain it would be the Nexus S came with 2.3 and that was very easy to get onto the generic GS due to similar hardware/drivers etc. So the same would maybe apply for getting 4.0 from a GN > GS2?

rp2000

the SoC between the SGS1 and Nexus S was the same.

The SoC between the SGS2 and Galaxy Nexus is very different with different drivers. Exynos vs Omap 4430.
