Yes, but the key is with that being the ONLY actual benefit that it brings... is it worth it? We're not getting the benefit of 4G, bluetooth 4.0, the camera or the A5X...

MKV doesn't play natively on the iPad... Any "supported" file will play perfectly - i've played full 1080p M4V (10k Kbps, ~8GB) M4V bluray rips on my iPad 2 without any problems.

What one is the retina display now? ;)

Any 720p videos you are playing that a juttery on an iPad 2 are of a ridiculous bitrate then... any "standard" 720p will play perfectly on the iPad 2.

Come on, it is noticeable! It's a massive difference. I'm not saying that everyone needs this resolution or will appreciate it, but it is a huge difference. It's like when HD televisions first came out.

As people have said, it's a 4x better quality screen on a device that's all about the display. Anyone using it for photography purposes will see an enormous difference I'm sure.

True, it is the main improvement, so fair enough, many iPad 2 owners probably won't feel the need to upgrade. But I think it's a pretty good effort for it to be at the same price as the iPad 2 was. I guess that's where people might regard the 'value' of these improvements.

I use AVPlayerHD. They say MKV files are supported.

Or reading, like me. Just like the iPhone Retina reduced eye strain and provided a 10x better reading experience, so will the iPad.

Anyone know if Apple shops have demo iPad 3s yet?

I also watch a lot of 720p movies and TV shows on my iPad 2. Sometimes they're a bit jittery during action scenes so for the new iPad to play 1080p (probably without stuttering) is another big plus.

The A5X probably has the same decoder IP block as the A5. If you had stutter with high bit rate 1080p files the new iPad might be no different.

So the closer the new iPad gets, the more I'm thinking it's not a worthwhile upgrade from the iPad 2.

Within the UK, the only advantages are:

1) Better camera --> Very infrequently used and made redundant by having an iPhone and Photostream.

2) Retina display --> Obviously a technological achievement but all pictures on the internet make it impossible to see any major improvement. Bearing in mind at normal viewing distance the iPad screen is pretty good as is, cannot really see a massive benefit from having this.

3) Bluetooth 4.0 --> Could be good, but is completely unused by everything.

4) A5X --> The iPad seems fast enough as is and as people keep pointing out, it's not really good for proper portable gaming due to the lack of physical controls, so pushing graphics seems a little bit of a waste.

The disadvantages:

1) Heavier --> iPad 2 was already too heavy.
2) Thicker

With the UK unable to use 4G, that's a major feature that is useless to us. Add in Bluetooth 4.0 being an unused standard and the A5X not being needed, it seems an awful lot of money for a screen upgrade.

Are they really disadvantages? Is anyone going to notice 0.6mm extra thickness? Or an extra 49g in weight? That's just absurd.

If you compare to teh Galaxy tab 10.1, that is only 100g lighter and 0.8mm thinner.

Thickness really is a moot point. Weight is inevitable given the bump in spec.

I thought it was 0.8 mm thickness? This is why i am holding off on a case, want one that clips onto the corners but want reports the ipad 2 cases fit the ipad 3 well...

I think you're being silly now. How else is a website supposed to show you the difference between the screens then? It's not about holdi that close, it's about being able to demonstrate the pixel density difference. As I'm sure you know.
