The first "proper" Kepler news Fri 17th Feb?

It's amazing how easily some people have forgotten that the 6000 and 500 generation were a disappointment compared to the 5000 and 400 generation, with a few exceptions.

Totally different situation, this is a die shrink where historically performance gains on previous gen have always been 50-70% with very few excetpions.

Well it was used for fermi and the 460 cards, and it was GF114 for the 560. I think we have to assume the 680 is a mid-high end core, not simply by it's code name but by its die size as well.

Not to mention the 256bit bus and only 2GB memory on a 'flagship' card.

The cynic in me thinks Nvidia had nothing to counter Tahiti in Jan, and have re titled their GK110 that was coming out in Jan to "GK104", overclocked the nuts off it and are releasing now.

Think about it, if people who choose Nvidia think mid range Kepler is this good it keeps their interest right? Folks will think if GK104 is this good, GK110 must be amazing? You follow?

The chip is far too small to have been Nvidia's designated "high-end" chip from the Kepler lineup.

Hell - it's around 20% smaller than GF104 and GF114 (GTX460 / GTX560) were...

Desperate to get rid of my 260 sli setup, but knowing that there's a better card just round the corner from either party would make buying this a bitter pill.

Looks like a nice enough card too :(

I'll ask again - Source? Or are you in need of standing up before speaking as your voice is being muffled?

Seriously Dave where have you been over the last week, this is 256bit GK104, Nvidia's own naming calls this card mid range. It's had the **** clocked off it to get it to 30% faster than a 580 which makes it the worse die shrink release ever I suspect (fermi was +40% on 285)

This will work if the 680 comes out at £300, otherwise people will think the GK110 will be scary and the 680 is overpriced.

You can blame a lot of things but I feel ATI's 28nm product has let them do this !

The problem there though was nvidia had gf102 in there code names. This time around there is no gk102 which makes the gk104 the best they have until the refresh line. It definately is not a full fat kepler as it look weak for compute stuff.

I think its a definite comprimise to get something on the market to compete but for over half a year we knew there was no gk102. I think this has been nvidias intentions for a good while.

Yep, I mean the successor to the 580 can only bring the same memory bandwidth, for me it should be owning the 580 in this area not equaling it. All signs this a mid-high part clocked high to knock the 7970 in to touch. In doing so Nvidia get the green light to command a premium for a part that would normaly retail at £250-300.

There well could be something in that logic, food for thought, uuummm

Agreed...

The underwhelming performance of the 7970 has allowed Nvidia to market their mid-range card as high-end, with a pricetag to match.

If the 7970 had performed 20-25% faster than it does (as most expected it to given the dramatic process shrink from 40nm to 28nm), Nvidia would have found themselves in a very difficult position - they would have been in the uncomfortable position (again!) of having no high-end competitor to the 7970 for at least six months. The relatively disappointing performance of Tahiti has let them off the hook somewhat...

In this instance, I feel that Nvidia's gain is our (the consumer) loss.
