BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

So has anyone requested the upgrade from BT?

As a former BE There customer, you hear scare stories about BT, really they have been just as good as Be there.

Ok I did have some issue with my modem at the beginning, and could only get in contact with India which was freaking useless, but thanks to Locky emailed an english BT technical support and they sorted it for me as they should have.

The whole BT throttleing thing... well I stopped using BT ages ago... so its a none issue

That's good to hear, cheers. I'm on a very short term Be contract due to my VM connection going to pot but it is quite likely (given the recent news about Be fibre, or lack thereof) that I will order BT 20/80 once I move in July.

FYI, for those looking at go to/upgrading to Sky Unlimited Fibre; it has put back a day. It was 12th (today) but now tomorrow. I can wait another day i suppose..

Grrr, annoying.

Whats the expected lead time between order and install usually?

£50 install fee as well, annoying.

I am currently in contract and rang them today, as it wouldn't upgrade the speed online.

No issue at all the guy I spoke to was spot on, did a line check and activated the 76/20 without a problem. He did say my contract was renewed and was 12 months, which confused me a little because I was on an 18 month anyway and only been with infinity a few months.

Didn't wanna put my foot in it & was just happy to be getting the speed with no extra cost. Yay!

Engineer arrived this morning as i was heading off to work. Phoned BT when i arrived at work and said i upgraded to infinity last week etc etc and said i read an article yesterday regarding the speed boost and she said thats the speed i shall be getting from now on. I think she made a few changes or somthing along those lines but nothing at a cost.

68ms download
20ms upload.

All for £10 less a month than what i was paying :D

You don’t have to go with BT to get FTTC, BT have made it available wholesale meaning there are dozens of other companies offering packages with shorter contracts and other perks.

Unfortunately due to the way BT market their own fibre service most people are unaware of this. My friend is stuck in an 18 month contract and has to use a VPN to get more than 20Kbps on bittorrent during peak times due to the harsh traffic shaping and throttling they apply.

A quick Google search of ISP ratings will show you that BT is one of the worst companies to go with. There are smaller companies out there that care about their customers, don’t trap people with long contracts, and have call centres where the staff can actually speak English and don’t know less about what they are helping you with than you do!

What a load of ********. Your friend should have read the t&c's about p2p throttling. In fact p2p throttling is the only thing BT do throttle and nowadays there are far greater methods for sharing files than p2p.

BT have been great since I joined them and I'm sure many others on here will agree.

What possible reason is there to go with BT? The Sky offering is cheaper and looks superior?

Upload speed, if that matters to you.

There is no guarantee that Sky will increase their upload speed. On their ADSL2+ product they have always had a needlessly low upload speed (their equipment worked fine for 'proper' ADSL2+ upload as I happily sync'd at higher speeds during the UKO ADSL2+ trials).

I have to say now ive been with BT for 2 and a half years now and havent had any problems in regards to internet connectivity or relating issues. Ive had to phone them a few times in regards to the phone and again, 9 times out of 10 get through to a helpful call centre. 18months seems long indeed at the end of the day, if your not getting what you pay for you have considerable rights to get it sorted.

I did consider Virgin last week but no cable in my area yet but as i say. Im a hppy enough customer for now.

Sky are only rolling out 38 down, 2 up iirc.

Also, the last time I checked, Sky is the same price is it not?

I don't use torrents anyway, so couldn't care less, BT have been superb since I switch from Virgin, who were terrible.

BT has faster speeds, and I bet if sky do offer 80/20 they will put a premium on it like talktalk have. BT is perfect as long as you don't use p2p from 4 till 12. Like I said further up, far greater ways to transfer files now than p2p.

Grrr, checker still showing 35/5 for me :(

Will this eventually be made live for eneryone? I was of the understanding that all FTTC cabs should be capable of this speed?
