BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Does anyone know if the HH3 is required for the speed upgrade? I'm still running the HH2. Thanks

Ive been running the HH3 anyway with normal broadband as it was sent out to me instead of a phone however i think you do and use the Red connection.

Your also need a faceplate change.

Not at home, but I ran a speedtest over VPN and it started off 30 and went to its normal 37/38 ish.

Was hoping that mine had been increased already... not sure why.

Yeah mine has been pretty much stable (no matter day/time tested) at around 37.4Mb but appears to be closer to 30Mb or under today even after router reboot.

Profile switches happen overnight, usually between 00:00 and 04:00. Needless to say I won't be staying up late to check. I'd rather just wake up tomorrow morning and check.

You don’t have to go with BT to get FTTC, BT have made it available wholesale meaning there are dozens of other companies offering packages with shorter contracts and other perks.

Unfortunately due to the way BT market their own fibre service most people are unaware of this. My friend is stuck in an 18 month contract and has to use a VPN to get more than 20Kbps on bittorrent during peak times due to the harsh traffic shaping and throttling they apply.

A quick Google search of ISP ratings will show you that BT is one of the worst companies to go with. There are smaller companies out there that care about their customers, don’t trap people with long contracts, and have call centres where the staff can actually speak English and don’t know less about what they are helping you with than you do!

Rubbish! A quick google search on any ISP will yield disgruntled users! There is so much fud being spread around about BT. Sorry, you snooze, you loose! Be lost me as a customer after 7 years, the last 2 of which the service has been going downhill.

P2P, if you really need to you will find ways around is, NWZgroups, VPS, VPN etc...

What matters to me is it works! It's early days for me but as long as downtime is not huge then I don't care about the shaping

...ah scrub that as it appears to be heading back up again

Anyone tried upgrading their contract yet ?

I think i am will wait a while before trying to upgrade. bound to be teething problems. Seeing as bt is so unorganized i was hoping to phone up and the say i was on a 12month contract when i am realy on 24 and see if i can get a 12month for same price. :D

I really don't see what all the fuss is about with BT. They're fine. They run a more professional NOC than almost any other UK ISP. They have to, they're BT!

Yes their call centre is as **** as all the other consumer ISPs. So what?

BitTorrent is for noobs anyway, so it's their own silly fault. What's more hilarious is those who "pay" for a VPN service to get around the QoS. Why not just "pay" for USENET instead? Someone wasn't thinking...

Just called 150 and got put through to "Darren" who knew all about it :D, 5 min job, talked me through TOC etc..., 24 hr activation.

... I hope I don't get another homehub!

Also he confirmed the website has a bug and is being looked at.

Something else he said which I found strange, I think I've been switched to a 12 month now as oppose to 18 or maybe just for this speed upgrade? .... he kept saying you are agreeing to a 12 month contract , and I kept saying you mean 18....

Might be worth a shot ;)

Just checked with the BT Speedtester and it shows my IP Profile is 38.72mb up and 10mb down.

I wonder if the full whack up, and almost full whack down is a good sign? I might just give it a day or 2 then call them to see whether their online checker is just being conservative by not offering me any improvement.

Whats the deal with bittorrent? Only started to pay attention to certain things over the last few weeks.

Looking forward to hearing how you all get on with your upgrades, post some speedtest results when you get it :D

I just looked at the bt business fiber page and there is no mention of any upgrades. So this is likely only for residential customers, so i can't get it. Going business was definitely WAY more hassle than it should have been. But not much i can do now.

The speedtester will just show what is currently on your line. Check here for the updated values.

Just ran the test:

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 53.2Mbps and upstream line speed of 15.7Mbps.

currently get 38/8

Just upgraded my Option 2 using their online thing. Wasn't working this morning, kept moaning about Line Saver Rental or something. Now it works.

Though slightly disappointed in that it only predicts 59/10 Mbit. Better than nowt I suppose!
