If you found £20 in a cash machine........

Found £10 in the notes out section of a self service till in my local Tesco the other week. Don't feel bad about taking it nor would I be annoyed if I had left my £10 in there and someone taken it.

This. if you are stupid enough to not give a second glance, then you can't really care that much.

Im amazed at the amount of potential thieves on this thread.

I would hand it in at the local cop shop. If unclaimed it becomes mine legally and I avoid getting prosecuted for 'theft by finding'.

Plus I wont be a thief, which gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.:o

I think a lot of people are of the mindset that if the amount of money is small, like £10 or £20, then taking it isnt as bad as it would be if it was like £200 or £1000.

I found a £5 note on the way to work one morning. I kept it because in my mind it seemed like a small amount of cash and I figured there was no way to trace the owner anyway. If it had been a packet with a few grand in it....that I'd probably hand in to the police.

While technically you should hand it in to the police I think nobody is going to suggest that you do - it's just a fiver you're up. You can't do anything to find out who it belongs to, so it's fine.

It's different with a cash machine though, because it'd suck it back in.

In all honesty if it was a packet with a few grand in it, then I'd be less likely to do something about it than if it was £100... My conscience would bother me with either, but with the £5K I'd be able to feel a lot better about having a dodgy conscience! I think I'd hand it in all the same.

20 quid is about the limit of my "guilt mode" I think. I would take it and spend it without much remorse. Two 20's? I would probably take it inside the bank and let them know.

I've found such amounts quite a a few times, and I'm sure I've lost similar amounts a few times - so it all balances out :p

STEAL STEAL STEAL!

Very simply, if someone left their phone behind, keep it. They should ALWAYS check to make sure they haven't left their phone.

etc

That's silly. It would be quite easy to locate the owner of a phone, not so the owner of a £20 note.

I'd take it, there's no way to prove who's it is, thus as the old saying goes "Finders keepers!". Money is different from a phone or wallet, a phone or wallet will have some form of identification with it, money does not. If someone asked me "Hey, did you just drop £20?" what's to stop me or anyone else saying "Yeah, I did" regardless of whether I did or didn't.

If I physically see who left the note there, then yeah I'll return it, but if it's hanging out the machine I'll take it.

The question is, if the £20 was sticking out and you chose option C. You are waiting for it to be sucked back in and someone else joins the queue "wtf is the hold up?" and you explain that the last person forgot to take their cash and waiting for that to be sucked back in so they don't lose it.

Would you stop that person from taking it if they want? Would you let them take it and report it stolen somehow? Or just let them take it and not care as it's not your moral compass that's out of whack?

Did this earlier this week while on holiday with like £50. Someone handed it in to the bank manager! So, from here on, I shall hand it in or ensure it gets sucked back in.

after reading through the comments- Why is it ok to steal?

A. Because if you didn't somebody Else would?

B. Because its their own fault they left it in there?

Does nobody want to do the right thing any more? This is one reason why I want to leave the country, the attitude that because other people do it means its the right thing to do. Its still stealing.

Finders keepers makes you a thief. That £20 is going back to the person who withdrew it, until you steal it from them.

But.... what if you need to use the machine? Would you just stand there and wait until it goes back in?

If I went to a cash machine and managed to forget the main part of the whole thing, I wouldn't expect to get it back.

:p

You'd have to be stupid to forget to take your money. Utterly, utterly stupid. In fact, I have absolutely no idea how it's even possible.
