*** The official HTC One X thread ***

Yeah, exactly. It's a decision they made, it's not something they 'need to fix'. App developers are the ones that can/are/need to 'fix' it.

I thought exactly the same when I was looking at it in shops, and every time I pick it up now (albeit a bit less because it's never on 100% brightness).

That is the crying shame unfortunately. I remember when I got my iPhone 3G. I was amazed at how good the screen was on a phone, looked so bright and crisp. Then you realise that for it to function as a phone and not die at 2 in the afternoon you need it at 25% brightness and it's just not quite the same.

Surely it's not an HTC issue, it's an app developer issue?

:p

At first I thought that as well, however, after the first update for my S by HTC, the 3 dot menu was then removed from the youtube app?

Wish HTC would do that as well! :p

Probably a problem by both HTC and the app developers.

There are many apps that have the proper ICS menu button in the app, but the 3 dot menu button is also still there at the bottom, no idea if this is HTC or the app developers problem now after what happened with the youtube app.

It's both imo.

ICS has been developed to not have any buttons, so apps optimised for ICS should have software menu buttons. But then how many ICS phones have no buttons and how much extra work is it to just do that?

And HTC should have done some surveys/decent user testing, because even the smallest amount of either of those would have told them that people want a menu button rather than a task switching button (whose function is duplicated by the long-home button anyway).

It's the same story as the HTC Desire HD which had a search hardware button. Didn't use it once in two years.

+1 to most of that.

I like the multi-tasking button though and rather have it than the menu button especially since the apps are starting to be optimized for ICS with a menu button in the top/bottom right/left, however, not with the way things are on the one series mobiles due to the 3 dot menu button wasting screen space currently.

It will be fixed/tweaked, but the question is when and by who? :p

And yeah I know that I can apply a tweak if I root, but I really don't want to just yet. If this problem isn't fixed within the next month or 2, I will be rooting then.

This along with getting rid of ads is the only reason I want to root.

It's easy for HTC to sort out.

They need to add an option under 'Developer options' to switch the function of the multi-tasking button to that of a menu.

Job done, zero problems.

They won't do this though, because they're stupid. :p

Yup quickest and easiest option that, heck they could even just take the tweak from XDA and send that out OTA as an update! Job done! :p :D

Yeah, exactly. It's a decision they made, it's not something they 'need to fix'. App developers are the ones that can/are/need to 'fix' it.

It was a bad decision though. The One phones are the only ones with this issue, because:

The 'style' Google want (with ICS and the GNex) is software buttons. The menu keys on apps are programmed to appear alongside the software buttons like they do on the Nexus, or Android does it automatically; probably the latter.

So, if HTC want to follow Google's logic (which it seems they do), they shouldn't have mixed capacitive buttons with the ICS multi-tasking button. If you're using capacitive buttons, you should keep a menu button for the above reasons.

If you want a multi-tasking button, use the software buttons like the Nexus. Instead, they've created an issue that app developers have to now work around, and it's not all that easy to sort out, as they have to adjust the layout of the app specifically for the One phones.

It's a massively unintelligent decision.

Don't know if this is an ICS/HOX issue, but my conversations in Whatsapp don't have any contact pictures. When I click on the contact and then view in address book they have their Facebook photo, as per dialler etc, but nothing in Whatsapp. Any ideas? Worked perfectly before.

Interestingly when I go to edit the contacts photo it lists the usual options (Facebook, Camera, Gallery, Google etc) but it also lists Whatsapp as an option, which is obviously blank.

Yeah I've got that and am rooted, but don't see anyway of getting out of the SD card to system (and then enabling write access).

Edit: Found it in Settings.

Edit 2: Worked perfectly, thanks :)

Normal day of phone usage today, here's some battery stats for any interested parties. Was out for 4 hours with wifi turned on hence the high wifi usage I think, as opposed to being always connected.

One thing I have noticed is the battery can jump. For example I took all those screenshots within a minute of each other as you can see but the battery dropped from 16% to 12% instantly. Also, anyone know why the GPS keeps turning on sporadically? It makes my battery drop a fair whack 3/4 through the day and coincides with a phone wake.

This might be old news, but I never knew this existed and it certainly didn't on my previous HTC device. No need for third party apps now!

How could you not know that!?!?! :p

It is a core feature of ICS, all phones have it :) Very useful and as you said eliminates the need of 3G watchdog and other apps now.

In case you didn't know either, you can click on an app below the graph and get a neat little summary of the specific app usage :)

Lol :D, yeah it isn't particularly nice that part, which I took a screenshot of and the all grey circle doesn't help either (looks bit better with some green)! :p

*roots and flashes a ICS theme now ¬_¬*
