German Grand Prix 2012, Hockenheim - Race 10/20

I have to say Lewis unlapping himself left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth - it was never going to make any difference to his race

I know it wasnt against the rules - it just felt "wrong"

Funny considering he wanted to retire the car when he got a puncture, then did retire for no apparent reason later on.
So you don't think he should have retired the car? Even in his position where there was damage and a high probability of a 0 point score on a high wear track?
Off course he can do it, just poor sportsmanship to use a lapped car to try and interfere.
So he should have retired? After all, driving round would just be interfering with the other racers..
Yeah course it was :p
You and your insider knowledge!

If his floor was so badly damaged with the puncture then he should have retired when pitting for a new tyre, but he never, he went on to set FL, overtake Vettel all with a car that was so damaged it needed to retire after Seb and Alonso pitted, ok then :) They retired the car after trying to interfere to help Jenson.

If you are suggesting anyone a lap down should retire then that's a good discussion, he could have stayed behind Seb until he pitted which we all knew was soon instead of interfering, then he would not be a lap down and then if a SC happened it would bring him back into the pack.

Had he got past Alonso and unlapped himself, and a SC came out, it would have been the difference between being a lap down, or being on the back of the train on the lead lap, so its worth an awful lot.

Yeah, plus since Canada 2011 I'd say never ever give up as anything is possible generally.

There is no question in my mind that Lewis moving in front of Seb pretty much ended any hope of Seb having a pop at Fernando. There was that small window when the tyres were just right and it was lost. In made for an interesting twist to the race but did spoil Sebs chance.

I'm not even sure what Hamilton said on the radio, Brundell said he wanted to retire but it sounded like he simply said the word tyres and the rest was barely hearable, I figured he was talking about which tyres to go onto.

Assuming he didn't say retire as I have no reason to think he would, in any race you can have a crash, bad tyres, slow cars, rain, anything, at that stage he had every chance of taking advantage of any problems and jumping into the points. It wasn't a massive chance and its not like a decade ago when 10 guys not finishing was fairly common, but it was possible. At the end of the race it wasn't possible and they did exactly what Button did earlier this season, then Button gave up 1 or 2 points to retire and be able to change the car before the next race without penalty, new gearbox I think was said at the time.

Same here, at that point it was game over so they pitted Hamilton and will likely make changes otherwise not allowed before the next race, gearbox or something else, don't approve of either but there you go.

As for the unlapping, it was nothing short of hilarious, completely allowed and Vettel's own fault, he didn't defend well and gave him the chance. Clearly they wanted to hurt Vettel and Alonso's race if possible, and its another time that Hamilton helped Button gain places by harrassing the guys infront, he just doesn't usually do it from so far down. The really stupid thing is, they could/should have put Hamilton on "ruin the tyres uber laps" when Alonso pitted, and pitted Hamilton and try and get him ahead of Alonso again to again help out Button. Instead they waited too long, pitted him anyway and he was too far behind to help.

Hell if they'd kept an eye Alonso they could have pitted the same time, maybe done a stunning stop and got out ahead, but could have had Hamilton do "who cares about tyre life" laps vs Alonso's "got to get to the end of the race" laps.

Hamilton cost Vettel, no question, Hamilton helped his team, no question, Hamilton did nothing wrong, no question, Hamilton got the worst of the luck again.... nothing new.

I can't believe the front 2-3 guys hit that debrie so hard and hit so much of it, and Hamilton is the one that gets the puncture.

He said that's it guys let's retire the car, or something like that. And you seem to be totally forgetting the blue flag rule in the rest of your post.

I seriously doubt the McLaren strategists planned for Hamilton to get involved with the leaders, I just don't think they are capable of reacting that quickly to a situation. I mean come on, this is a team who though Hamilton could do 64 laps on one set of Medium tyres!

Don't worry, Vettel would have lost the place anyway after he cheated.

:) Had Lewis not got involved the overtake is unlikely to have happened.

I also don't think he was doing anything for the team. I think he was trying to prove a point. It just happened to give JB a chance at Seb.

they didnt think that.

they said a 1 stop strategy excluding the stop after the puncture.

Didn't Ted Kravitz say during the race that he had spoken to the Mclaren guys and they confirmed it was 1 stop not including the puncture stop?
