Olympic Track Cycling

Hope us mere mortals will be able to try out the track once the olympics are over.

It probably will be open to the public. All of the other velodromes are: Newport, Manchester and the new one in Glasgow when it opens later this year.

I know amongst the FG community there's been a lot of interest

I think a lot of them will find that their bikes are not allowed on the track, unfortunately. I measured my fixed gear bike last night but the bottom bracket is too high (mine is 12", rules for the manchester velodrome say 11" BB height ). Also my cranks are too long (rules say 165mm cranks) but that's easy enough to change. Your also not allowed any braze on stuff on the frame (guides for gear or brake cables, fittings for downtube shifters, etc). You do see a few people riding proper track bikes around town though, so those frames are legal, but you cant take a bike which has been ridden outside onto the track.

There will probably be bikes to hire though, as most other velodromes do. Also, track bikes are so simple with no gears or brakes and that makes them quite cheap.

I imagine if I were to try a banked track I'd just fall off instantly!

My understanding is that like a few sports it actually gets easier as you go faster - at least up to a point.

There's a suggestion that they're going to try and get support from Bradley Wiggins to renovate the Herne Hill Velodrome but that's another one you can add to your list.

It was a 4000m individual pursuit. Ed Clancy was 2nd and is now sitting 2nd equal overall. We still have the Scratch Race and a 1000m time trial to go. Ed is expected to do well in the TT, so has a good chance of a medal today.

Well yes, but the Team GB road bikes cost about that much as well.

The team GB bike is a bad example. The UCI rules state that they must use production bikes but team GB have custom made bikes. They have to offer them for sale though to comply with the rules. I doubt they actually expect to sell any.

There's not much to a track bike (no gears or brakes) so they are a lot cheaper than road bikes. Expect to pay around 300-400 for an entry level bike and not too much over 1000 for a top spec bike.
