Moving in with the missus for the first time

I think it's going to be one of those things where you wont really be sure on the spending until 3 months. Things like BT bill will be every 3 months too wont it? We're not really the type to buy a take away for the sake of it. Id rather drive to where ever and buy one for £2/3 instead of £15...seems a waste

Always assume the expenses will be higher than you think by at least 20%.

Then add a random £100 for X social event/something breaking/family birthday/anniversary at least per month.

The Minimum wage unfortunately isn't a living wage - my outgoings leave me with about £1,500 a month & even I sometimes surprise myself with random expenses which really cut into my funds (OK, I do earn more than my partner & help her out when her car goes wrong - but these things need to be accounted for).

Wow some members must be living off tins of dog food!

250 a month is LOW for food for 2 people, and unrealistic for all your grocery......girls are not cheap to maintain, just go into your girlfriends bathroom and take a look at the Haircare, Oral Care, Female Deodorants & Body Sprays, Sanitary Towels & Tampons, Beauty & Skincare, Hair Removal!!!! the list goes on.

Then you got all the lovely surprises like boilers blowing, and cars not passing MOT.....last month alone we had £400 go out that we didn't/couldn't budget for.

Im sure it can be done, but stressing out over money is REALLY not good for a relationship, but as long as you both have realistic expectations of how hard it is setting up home you are already at an advantage.

What do you mean it's unnecessary... it's the law?

OP good idea about ditching the Sky. We did the same thing because despite all the channels sometimes we still couldn't find anything decent to watch! We picked up a Freeview HD box instead and it's perfect.

what law? just dont watch a program until its finished and then jump on iplayer or wherever.

totally legal and no silly tax :p

Everyone is making a remark on how bad your life is going to be with all the bills and how you're not calculating right! Common guys, he's only asked for some advice!
Living on your own, with your partner, starting your life as a responsible independent adult = PRICELESS!
The place on right move looks lovely and modern, you seem like you have put thought on this.
Good on you - Good luck!

What about clothes?

Savings/Pension?

Entertainment? PC Bits? Car repairs and servicing, tyres, etc...

It's *always* a good idea to budget everything, otherwise you end up spending a bit here and a bit there, and suddenly you've overspent and you have no idea where the money has gone.

A good tip is to track *everything* you spend for a month. And I mean *everything*, down to the last penny. It's surprising what you end up spending money on. It was quite a shock when I worked out how much money I was spending in Starbucks each month.

:(

No it's not. Me and the missus spend less than £250 on average and we don't have to scrimp in any way. We're just sensible. I bet we eat better than a fairly large majority of people.

Hi guys. Me and the missus are moving into a house together within the next month or two and we're trying to figure out what you need to budget for. So far we've made the following list. I'm just wondering have we missed anything out?

I should add we've budgetted for the high end, just to be safe.

Wage = £1730
-------
RENT - £500 is this a 1 bed flat?
Council Tax - £100 the black whole of calcutta?
Car Insurance - £85
Food - £250 living in lidle?
Phone bill - £80 where are you phoning adult lines?
Gas/ Elec/Water - £130
TV Licence - £15 (this is £24 if you have not had a tv licence before as you have to pay faster for licence you dont have then after 6 months its £12 per month)
Net (76mb)/PHONE (Evening/weekends) with BT £36
Fuel £100
Car finance – 180People still do this?
Insurance for the house would be somthing you should add
Repairs is somthing you should add unless its furnished (car, washer cooker hoover ect)

How are people spending so much on food?
Me and the girlfriend spend about £50 a week (average) on grocery shopping, and that's for both of us and, we both eat healthily so its not just buying cheap rubbish.

you guys must be smoking crack...

1 weeks shop - £58 (for 2 people)

2 packs chicken fillet breasts, 1 pack lean mince steak - £10
steaks - £8
fish - £6
15 eggs - £2.50
fruit - £6
veg - £5
milk 6 pint - £2
salad bits - £5
cereal - £3
pasta - £3
rice - £3
oils and spices- £5

total
£58.50

On £250 a month you can eat healthy salads, pasta, chicken, mince, fish, steak and do a number of meals like omelets, chilli, pasta dishes, home made mince steak burgers etc

Buy a couple of cheap potato's and do home made steak and chips...

Hell, even on the £5 a week food challenge we did at uni, I still managed to eat reasonably healthy

cleaning products, toiletries, other misc groceries.. it all adds up, £250 is not enough unless you are going to be really miserly

This.

You have to budget EVERYTHING. Not just regular purchases. And track your expenses and see if you're busting your budget or on target.

From the OP's list he has missed out untold.

Contraception for starters so a few packs of dobbers a month will be required or she'll be up the spout not working & you'll have 3 people to feed/house etc

On top of that you need at least 200 quid a month in your own pocket that she don't know about otherwise life will be hell buying all the **** "you need" rather than having some fun money in your own pocket.

i spend about £250 a day on food, mostly flown in from Jersey or i have a boy fetch it down from my estate in the highlands.

Some of you guys are total peasants, you sicken me,.

Don't shop in Tesco whatever you do, Go to Morrisons or Sainsbury.
