Also have to say Jacobs Photography will be missed far more than Jessops who were basically the HMV of camera shops.

It's a real shame. I used to work for Jessops in Cheltenham and we had a great team - with a very good rep with customers both local professional photographers for specialist kit, and also enthusiasts.
As mentioned above we were not on commision and were well trained and informed. Everyone who worked with me were all into photography and were always keen to give imparial advice. I had just gained a degree in photography and wanted to pay off some debts before moving to London to persue a career in photography (never happened btw! :p).
Anyway, a big middle finger to the idiots saying good riddance and hope that everyone who works for them finds work soon.

Amen to that.

I used to be the branch manager of the store in Halifax, we had a great rep, I built a fantastic team and had a great repeat customer base....a lot of stores are indeed crap but it is down to each individual one.

I still have a few friends who work for them, one of which i've been speaking today and I do hope they find work easily :(

Well that's it then. Woolies, Dixons, Comet, Game, Our Price, Jessops, Index - all gone. All we'll have left in Stafford are Starbucks/Costa/Nero, betting shops, charity shops, the banks, Argos at one end and Weatherspoons at both ends lol. Virtually every empty shop window has a "for let A.J. Philips" sign like as if he owns and rents out the entire high street.

last time I looked, game were still in Stafford?

No surprise really. They always seem to be 30% + more expensive than anyone else selling the same thing. I knew this might of happened, as I noticed they weren't getting in stock of the GO PRO 3 etc

In Eastbourne, we had Game & Gamestation.

Gamestation opened up in Blockbuster on a retail park out of the town centre, it then moved into the town centre and was always rather busy.

Game always seemed to be quite empty, then all of a sudden Gamestation dissapears and Game opens up in the same shop that they used to be in, and closed their old shop.

Haven't bought a game or anything from them for years, too expensive.

The problem we have at the minute is the supermarkets, they just sell everything at a heavily discounted price, which in the end is great for the person buying the items, but if someone can go food shopping and pick up a tv, kettle, ironing board, radio, camera, amongst other things! Then people will get it all there.

Pet shops will be gone soon, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out if somewhere like halfords starts to struggle.

Comets demise could have been directly linked with supermarkets selling electrical's, why go to Comet when you are already in Tesco/Sainsburys/Asda/Morrisons

That's the case for ANY highstreet retailer though. Leases, bills, maintenance, security, staff employment etc there are massive overheads to have a high street presence so why should they not be more expensive?

The doom and gloom will continue, I'd be surprised if Overclockers themselves last another 10 years as Amazon will probably start dominating in both digital downloads for games and computer components.

Ok, so the customer service won't be as good, but when the prices are 30% cheaper people will go elsewhere.

OCUK need to start thinking ahead! I'd hate it if this place was another number.

No surprise, sad though and I do feel for the staff.

Case in point - I walked into Jessops nosing at cameras weekend, looked at a Canon ixus 500 - had a demo/play with it - chatted to salesman -asked price -£179 he said. Went for coffee and a google - found same at £139 on Amazon delivered free, bought it off my phone there and then - arrived this morning

I feel bad. :(

Ouch...its a good thing i didnt buy my camera from them but rather John Lewis in the end.

[southpark]Oh my God, they killed Jessops........you B*******![[/southpark] :D

Posted something similar in the photo section but the majority of Jessops customers (mainly middle aged mums and the older generation say 50+, very few young people) are after point and shoot types cameras and you can get them either much cheaper online or, for most I suspect, camera phones are starting to replace having a separate camera to carry.

We are going to end up with nothing at this rate. Everyone being driven out of business because they cannot compete with what itself is unprofitable online retailing with margins so low it's a wonder how they will ever make decent money?

Surely if that happens though there will be a reset of sorts... people have to buy their stuff somewhere.

It's a shame that the writing is on the wall for any retailer that specifically operates solely in consumer electronics or media.

I guess Jessops had several issues, one being the accelerated growth of smartphones impacting on point and shoot camera sales, competition from e-tailers and majority of pro-consumer photographers never really spoke highly of them.

Doesn't help when staff were not trained to a decent standard, one member of staff tried telling me that the Galaxy Camera had the same sized sensor in it as the NX1000! Quite shocking really...

I had the news on earlier and wasn't sure if I heard right but seemingly I did. Do we blame this on a recession or online retail?

OcUK is more similar to amazon than a highstreet store like jessops, one massive central warehouse and majority of sales online. Only difference is that it has a small shop on the front of it for physical sales too. (i say small ive not been to the new place :p)

You're crying for the demise of a bunch of low-rent chain shops?

PS: Dixons is alive and kicking.
