***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

Any news of the orb coming out in the UK?

Yeah that would be nice, given that it's now 4 months since the phone came out and the Americans have the orb. Terrible performance from Google as usual. The wireless charging was one of the reasons I bought my N4... looks like I got suckered.

We could really do with a thread talking about custom roms and kernels

the whole point of this phone was that it runs stock android and get's updates before any other phone.

there is only a handful of ROM's which are any decent. and only 2 kernel's afaik that are even worth mentioning FAUX and Franco.

Paranoid Android is what most are using.

i think that's all the info everyone needs.

For anyone thinking of buying and concerned about battery life, don't be.

My phone uses around 1% every 2 hours in standby.

As a phone its exceptional, I had a 4 hour conf call and it barely used any battery power. The reception and sound quality make my iPhone seem like a relic too.

I frequently get 2+ days out of a battery and I'm on the phone 5-6 hours a day.

I have sync services turned off and auto brightness. That's all I did.

That pretty much follows the information at GSM Arena and my usage of it too. Comparing to an iPhone 5:

http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5048&idPhone2=4910

It shows that it will last longer on standby and trounce it on talk time. But (despite the 50% bigger battery) when you start to use it for other things like web browsing the iPhone is so well optimized it can't come close.

I have to say while browsing with Chrome (nothing massive just standard blogs/forums/news sites) I've noticed the back get warm where the processor is. Not hot just noticeable.

Been a HTC Desire HD user for 2+ years and contract has been up for 2 months.

I've waited until the GS4 announcement but was left a little disappointed. I know I don't want an iPhone so after looking around this looks like a great phone to buy outright and use on giffgaff or alike.

Ordered the 16gb version, quite excited to get it. Seems pretty unbeatable in terms of value for money.

In terms of screen protectors, I've read a lot of people moaning the ones they order are too small to cover the screen completely. Has anyone bought one that does the job properly?

I have to admit, I'm not even tempted by the HTC One or the Galaxy S4; whilst both of those handsets offer improvements in certain areas over the Nexus 4, most of those improvements add little to no value for me.

For example, the build quality and the camera or the HTC One are such improvements but the Nexus 4 feels pretty good in hand due to the glass, which couldn't be said for the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S before it.

Most of the new software features on the Galaxy S4 are nice to have but aren't exactly critical. One thing I do know for sure is the regret I would feel when the next version of Android is announced and in stuck with a 6 month plus lead time until the update hits, if I were to buy either the HTC One or Galaxy S4.

I can't see any particularly compelling reasons to go from a 'current' high-end smartphone to one of the next ones like the One or S4. It's just more of the same.

From current high-end devices though? The higher-resolution display is probably the most 'useful' thing really, the rest seems to mainly be software features and even faster hardware, and it's not like the S3 or N4 can be considered slow.

Seems like skipping a model each time is the way to go, if the N4 hadn't been so cheap I'd have still had my S2, in which case the S4 would be a decent upgrade.

Yeah, they are good upgrades.

I mean, over the Nexus 4 the One/S4 will be:

  • Faster
  • Better battery life
  • Better build (in the case of the One)
  • Superior screen
  • Better storage options
  • Better camera and video camera
  • 4G

There's no doubt more than that as well. Okay, when you factor in the price points the Nexus 4 is in a stronger position but there's no doubt the new phones are better. Better, but not essential.

For most people it's probably best to get a phone every other release, depends whether you think it's worth it. If you sell your phone and upgrade it's what, £100-150 a year or so. Probably worth it if you use your phone loads.

All the protectors won't fit the screen fully as the glass is curved at the ends so they won't stick properly. I think the wet ones maybe the exception. I am very happy with ho wmy screen protector fits.

if I was going to go for one now I would either get this one

or this one

I got one from ebay and it has been fine but these seem to come across as being better

PA on 4.2 2is lovely and I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

Need to play with Nova some more and customise it better. Also need to do screen calibration then I'm done.

A nice fast phone with simple layout is all I want. Not sure of I can be bothered with Chrome over the stock browser, is it much better?

Also, hand cent or other msg Alps recommended, stock is pish?

Using the DashClock widget on my N4 - does anyone know how to show it full screen when you press the power button. Mine shows the pattern unlock.

I was in the same boat as you and had a DHD for 2 years + I finally upgraded as mine was slowing up a lot. I would recommend getting a bumper as I found the nexus 4 to be quite slippery to hold compared to the DHD. I havn't had any scratches on the front of my phone but have a few on the back and even a crack from the top to about 3/4 of the way down, this was before I bought a bumper anyway. You will enjoy it anyway its a great step up from the DHD imo.

I haven't had any problems using the phone bare (apart from protective screens front and back). I guess I must have lizard hands hehe

It is the best phone for £289 and then with GiffGaff's £12 Goodybag (£144 a year) it's unreal for a top spec phone.

Not had a problem with mine either & I have quite small hands. Completely bare too.

Anyone using Light flow on their nexus 4? Thinking of trying it but sure I read somewhere a while back there were issues with it on the nexus.

@helsinki98

Your comments are very encouraging! Glad you feel it's a worthwhile upgrade.

Think from the comments I've read I'll try the phone without a bumper first to see how it goes. I've ordered a front + back protector.

Been using it since Day 1, 0 issues here on a range or different rom. Works perfect, you can try the free versions just to test, some custom roms (Currently using Xylon) have very good notification options but I still like Light flow more.
