NASCAR 2013 Sprint Cup season (other series discussion welcome!)

Sprint Cup drivers continue to dominate the Nationwide series (no less than 6 Cup regulars in the top 10), with Kyle Busch taking yet another win.
 
Matt Kenseth took his third win of the season in the Sprint Cup race at Darlington, moving up to third in points. Jimmie Johnson retains the championship lead after finishing 4th in the race.
 
Paging JRS, it's the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte this weekend :) Hamlin will start from pole position (with a new track record: 27.604 seconds, 195.624 mph). For those that are interested, Danica Patrick outqualified both Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Tony Stewart.
 
I really wish I could get at least highlights of the Sprint Cup. The Nationwide series is good, but I just struggle to get into it knowing its the 2nd tier.

Did anyone see the All-Star race last weekend? JJ won, so fandom predictably exploded. Hey ho. Maybe one day NASCAR fans will GROW A GODDAMNED BRAIN AND STOP WHINING ABOUT THE #48 TEAM CHEATING. Pushing the rulebook is a part of NASCAR. People seem to not grasp this. Or maybe they're just annoyed that Hendrick, and in particular the #48 team, do it better than everyone else :p

I think they're bored of Johnson and Knaus dominating the series more than anything else :p

Nationwide race is under way, Kyle Busch in the lead (again).

Unsurprisingly, Kyle Busch takes his 57th Nationwide series victory, his 7th at Charlotte. Another dominant performance with 186 laps led out of 200. Kyle Larson was the highest finishing rookie in 4th.

Regan Smith extended his points lead to 29 over Sam Hornish Jr after finishing 10th in the race.

Kevin Harvick won the Coca-Cola 600, his second victory of the season. Kasey Kahne was second and Kurt Busch third. Jimmie Johnson extended his championship lead to 32 points despite finishing 22nd in the race.
 
I am in no shape, way or form a Kyle Busch fan. And a few years back I would never had said what I'm about to say. But I would really like to see him try out a Formula One car now.

A), he'd probably be very good at it. And a well-driven F1 car is something worth watching....
B), because of that it'd wind the 'NASCAR sux, F1 rools!!!1111oneone" crowd up....

And this coming from someone who once posted a thread on these forums whining about how awful Kyle's declaration that he'd like to test a Toyota F1 car was :p

Aaaaaaaaaaaaanyway. Kyle didn't win the Nationwide race (a yellow flag threw a curve to the field and Joey Logano won). He's leading the Cup race as I type this though.
 
Think Kyle would need some time in GP2 first to be competitive in an F1 car, but I'd be interested to see that. :)

Edit: on a side note, does anyone else find Krista Voda annoying? Jamie Little was a better pit reporter :p

I think it would be interesting to see an American in an F1 car, especially a competitive F1 car, because it has been so long since one has been in one. Scott Speed was in the TR when they were just formed 7 years ago, and before that was Michael Andretti in a Mclaren in 1993 :eek:.

Considering Nascar and Indycar are some of the faster forms of motor sport along side F1, it seems strange that none of the Yanks have crossed over.

Alex Rossi is in GP2 and looks set for a Caterham drive. But given the amount of money required to go racing in Europe and the limited seats available, I'm not surprised most gravitate to Nascar. You can make a good living just in the Truck series alone. It's also better aligned to the front-engined sprint car racing that many young Americans grow up in.


More horsepower than an F1 car, some aero and incredibly light weight. Also somewhat dangerous, very thrilling though.
 
Jason Leffler dies after an accident during a Sprint Car race in New Jersey. He was the first driver to win a race for Toyota in the Busch Series (now the Nationwide Series). In 56 races in the Truck series he made 35 top-10 finishes, 1 win and 10 poles. He'd found success a bit harder to come by in recent years, his last full season ride was back in 2011 in the Nationwide Series for Turner Motorsports (he finished 6th in the championship IIRC) and he didn't end up making many NASCAR starts in 2012. Guess he went Sprint Car racing to fill the void.

Not the first driver this year to die racing Sprint Cars on dirt, sadly. Hopefully he'll be the last.
 
RIP Jason Leffler. Seems my comment about sprint cars rang true in the worst possible way.

Meanwhile it will come as no surprise that Jimmie Johnson did indeed win at Pocono, extending his championship lead. Trevor Bayne won the rain-delayed Nationwide race at Iowa, moving up to 9th in points. Piquet continues to have a disappointing season, he finished 25th in the race.
