Just switching to a non goo type shaving cream will probably help. Ditch the canned stuff and pick up a tub of shaving cream from someone like Taylor of Old Bond Street (ToBS) and a £15 badger brush and you'll make a lather far superior to that you can get out of a can. Just doing that will give you a better shaving experience. I'm sure someone can suggest a suitable brush, there have been plenty mentioned recently.

It get's a lot of hate though when I look at shaving threads. Not sure why the smooth handle edwin jagger's get so much hate :( I love mine and it's not slippery at all. Yes I understand you can't put too much pressure but you still must have the dexterity of dumb frog to constantly have it slipping.

Never used proper creams and brushes though with mine. Planning on getting a badger brush soon and some proper cream and gel.

any recommendations?

My first shave with the cedarwood & clarysage cream and a new Feather blade was amazing. I did one with-the-grain, one across and two against-the-grains and didn't even nick myself or get a rash at all.
 
Can someone explain a little the difference in a normal blade and a feather?

Can feathers be used in any DE handle?

Feather is just a brand of Japanese double edged blades. They are known for being sharper than many others and cost a bit more than most. They can be used in any DE razor.
 
Has anyone tried Iridium blades, just read that they are supposedly the best options, but again they are even more than feathers at about £40 for 100. I'm also still on the lookout for another razor to try alongside my Merkur Futur, thinking of a vintage Gillette Fatboy or Muhle r89 grande, any recommendations?

Edit, have made a purchase, as above but went for the St James Pre Shave oil to see what its like.

With preshave oil to you apply alittle for each application of foam, so each pass its applied etc?

Cu3ed, don't be at all scared of Feathers. I have found them to be nicer to shave with than Derby or Merkur blades as they cut through the hair more easily. Anyway, one of the nice things about this shaving stuff is the fun trying out all the different creams, gels, blades, and pre & post stuff. :)

With my pre-shave oil, I put a single coat on before I start and that's it. No idea if that's the correct procedure, though, but I'm a bit too lazy to apply it more times unless someone tells me that I should. To be honest, my skin is a thousand times better since dumping my Mach Quattro anyway - even when I was just using Derbys, a £5 brush and the 50p Palmolive shaving stick to get started.

Ahh right, yes I have a sample pack of those, I actually used one last night wondering if that was them but didn't find them anymore sharper than my usual, Perma Sharps to be honest.
 
i find i get a good first shave with Feathers, nice and sharp, the 2nd shave is pretty average, not a blade i will buy more of.

I have loads of 7 O'Clock Yellows, Greens and Blacks which are all good in different razors.

I might buy some more Iridium's, but will most likely put an order in at bestshave for a few years supply of Astra SP's (Great in my open combs, <£6 for 100) and Rapira SS (Great in my safety bar razors <£5 for 100) at some point soon.

Thanks for that, order arrived today. Don't usually buy stuff un-sniffed but at that price it was worth the punt :)
