Haha, to be fair, it's just pure coincidence that i was riding that on the same day as your hilly ride. That's the biggest climb in the UK, not everything up here is like that :p

It's about 70 miles from my house, so i drove there :( It would be around 160 miles to ride there then up it and home again, so that was the first time up it in about 2 years.

haha, it wasn't hilly by proper cycling standards but it was a big change compared to london roads that im so used too :)

i bet i could climb up that no problems.. except that its on the other side of the country :eek:

Yep, i'm sure you could. It's not the steepest hill around, the maximum is around 17-18%.

IMO, Something like HardKnott pass in the lakes is much harder, it has sections that are 30%! Time for me to get off and walk.
 
Took a long lunch and went round a few of the LBS's to see what sort of aero framesets they had on offer:

Orbea Orca - meh
Willier Cento - Not bad
Storck Scenero - not very aero tbh
Scott Foil - Nice
Time ZXRS - Want!
Giant Propel - Nice but way to many logo's. Apparently framesets available in the 2014 range though
Look 695 - Kinda aero and apparently an aero option for the 2014 range. Want!
BMC TMR01 - Want!
BMC Impec - Not aero but apparently handbuilt in Swiss.. It's almost as ugly as an S5 and costs an obscene amount of money. (they had 3 starting from 10k to 25k for the 'Lambo' edition lol)

Going to see what the sales offer which I guess should start in August?

might be a silly question, but

I have a roadie, with compact gearing (at least I think it is, how do u check?)

if I bought another roadie but with a Triple, will the gears be any lower to a compact?

just looking at my options for a training bike

A roadie with a 50/34 chainset and 11-32 cassette has a wider range of gears than a triple and it doesn't look quite as bad (apart from the ridiculous dinner plate 32 cog).

That said, I'd have absolutely no shame in using it as I'm a higher cadence climber. All about what works for you.

Higher cadence climbing is for girls. If your knees haven't disintegrated by the time you reach the summit you're not a man :p

Wow, that's an amazing ride right there! The Bealach is definitely on my radar for next year i think, looks an awesome climb. I fancy the sportive ride they do that goes over it. Doubt i'll ever get near those speeds going up it though!

Compact is 50-34. Standard is 53-39, but it can vary - some do 52-38, I've seen a 52-42, allsorts really.

A triple is usually higher at the top and lower at the bottom, so something like 53-39-30. I don't know how cassettes on triples work, though. I imagine with a medium or long cage derailleur you could get something like 11-32 at the back which would give you a stupid range of gears at both ends.
 
In praise of Garmin...

Some of you may remember my rant about my Garmin 705. If not, short story was the mount broke it fell off and got run over by a Porsche, no less.

Garmin have been difficult all along via phone/email and refuse to acknowledge the fault was with the mount, BUT having posted it back to them on Friday I appear to have received dispatch confirmation for a replacement unit free of charge today. Not counting my chickens till it arrives but if everything is in order then I take everything I said back! :)

so its a more range of gears then, which is what I want, I want some lower gears until I got the power in my legs, then I'll switch to my summer bike
