*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

So tempted to buy a PS4 at the mo. I want to play Killzone and Resogun (also for the VR, Deep Down and drive club)

would you say it's worth buying yet if you've already got all the multi platform games on decent PC ?

No, not by a fair bit yet.

Found out what the problem was, it was overheating but not my PS4, it was my HDMI splitter that was overheating.

Cool, well hopefully cooler now : - ) artifacts on screen can sometimes normally be due to heat or a bad overclock... Been there few times with PC gaming and had a bad overclock or overheating..

Glad its sorted.

Rumour that PS4 is lead platform for call of duty going forward:http://www.nowgamer.com/news/2325199/ps4_will_be_call_of_dutys_lead_platform.html

Wouldn't be surprised really due to the extra power. Can just roll some settings back for the X1. Doubt it will mean timed DLC though like the article speculates.

In this case it's most likely a tools issue, as they are quoted as saying in the article they can't really do much in the way of different effects because it has to work on both(at least unless the Xbox drops to Wii U numbers sometime in the next 6 months). WHich really just backs up what we seem to be hearing everywhere of late, this gen the tools are much better with the PS4. Ultimately if it's easier to build a game on the PS4 then you get much of your work done, debugging, get the thing working on the easiest platform then port an effectively working game to other platforms.

Last gen the PS3 was said to have really poor tools at launch and the first 2-3 years before they improved while MS had their usual high quality tools. For this gen a lot of people are saying PS4 tools are okay, Xbox one tools are horrendous. So switching to PS4 as lead platform(assuming some familiarity in tool design/layout) suggests the Xbox one tools have taken a massive step backwards.

I do think in the next couple years game dev's will find they can add more effects on the PS4 than the X1. Though I have to say I'm surprised that games are being released without massive optimisation for the Xbox one. I honestly thought we'd get, well if a game ran 60fps on the PS4 I'd expect 60fps on the Xbox one but at lower settings and some work done. That basically more than a few games have gone 60fps PS4 and just whatever basically the same settings work at on the Xbox one and be done with it... shows a distinct lack of giving a **** about the Xbox one.

In this case it's most likely a tools issue,

That's what I thought as well. The PS4 is known to be easy to develop for whereas the X1 is more difficult because of the eSram. Makes sense to switch to PS4. I just hope the X1 owners don't get shafted with poor ports like PS3 owners had to put up with last gen.

You would have thought M$ would have realised difficult to develop for console don't get much love, just look at the cell cpu in the ps3 when it first came out. Even now some cross platform games run terrible on the ps4 compared to the 360.

Infamous got despatched this morning never played 1&2 so i hope i can get into it! For £40 its worth a shout judging by the hype train.

Well it makes sense, like they did last generation it's best to develop for the most simple hardware so you have fairly raw code, then port it over to the complex hardware and give its idiosyncrasies (ESRAM, reduced GPU power) special attention to bring performance back up. There's no point in having things like ESRAM workarounds in the PS4 version as they will likely only hurt performance.

PS4 software update adding some new features in a few weeks time:

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2014/03/19/new-ps4-update-add-share-enhancements-hdcp/

This upcoming update will add a rich video editor with a simple tool to personalise your video clips, and you’ll also be able to export to and save the videos and screenshots you create by pressing the SHARE button to a USB drive. In addition, this update will add an HDCP off option for capturing gameplay via HDMI, a feature we’ve previously said would come after launch.

Looking forward to the USB exporting - far easier than what Im having to do now, especially for the additional flexibility...

ps3ud0
