Intel Haswell Refresh Processors Codenamed Devil’s Canyon – Launching in Mid 2014 With Unlocked Desi

I still think the new processors will work fine on z87. Considering they are repacing existing K series 4th gen processors which will become EoL, it would be crazy to not sell any u locked processors to the millions of customers who currently have a z87 board, many of which will be less than 1 year old.

Perhaps it's just wishful thinking ony behalf as a z87 owner, but I am hopeful the full range of Haswell refresh chips will work.
 
There is no need for z97 now, it should be coming out with broadwell so yes it's a big cash grab, thing is z97 needs something to sell it and exclusive K chips will do that, that's why Intel are bigging them up as great for overclocking and better tim etc.

You will need a Z97 to use all of the features built into the new Haswell-refresh CPU's like boot guard, but I expect them to still work on Z87, its that or i'll seriously consider ever buying Intel again, as I think will many, Some will buy Z97 anyway who have not upgraded yet just for the new M2 support, maybe even current Z87 users will sell there old kit and upgrade again.

But like I said before, what are companies like OCuk going to do with all of those high end overclocking Z87 motherboards that they have left, like the Gigabyte Sniper 5 or the OC Force if you cant get an overclocking CPU for them ?

Intel Haswell refresh in the shops in May

The dark satanic rumour mill has manufactured a hell on earth yarn that Intel may release an update to its desktop Haswell "refresh" processors in May.

The source of the rumour is Hermitage Akihabara . It claims Intel will launch its new processors, including its flagship Core i7-4790K, on May 10 in most markets. These next generation Haswell chips will include Intel's Z97 chipset, which provides support for faster and larger M.2 SATA Express drives.

Nothing really to see here tbh, anyone running 4.5 sandy/ivy/has is going to gain very little I suspect zero point in throwing 4 figures at a new rig for this sort of upgrade, will wait till ddr 4, m2 and pcie4 has settled before upgrading.


These dribs and drabs upgrades not just from intel but gpus too is really taking the excitement out of the game these days

^^ I don't really agree. Would rather Intel released something than nothing, for those on Sandybridge or older, if they are considering a move up to Haswell, at least they can jump on Z97 and know they have upgrade options later on as well with Broadwell '14nm'.

These new chips are supposed to be heavily tweaked for overclocking, updated packaging materials, improved TIM, specifically re-engineered for enhanced performance and overclocking.

Sure they will appeal to some. Even the unlocked Pentium might encourage new adopters to the platform who could move to a quad core later on.

X99 coming soon as well. Intel working hard imho..
 
I saw an MSI Z97 motherboard advertised earlier as coming with a CPU shim for delidded/naked CPU's, it got my hopes up thinking that the new Haswell might be really OC friendly and do away with the heatspreader...? or hopefully it won't be glued and as difficult/risky to remove.

I'm guessing I'm wrong and it's just MSI catering to the hardcore delidders though?
 
Asus had a similar shim for use on delidded chips, think it was available for the Maximus VI extreme.
 
If i were to just buy (likely a discounted) 4770k, would it be solid until skylake anyway (which is also likely to be pushed back into late 2015/2016 regardless).

So irritating, why did i decide to upgrade now :p

Yes it would be solid until Skylake, Remember these are "Haswell Refresh" which literally means 100MHZ clock boost and a little bit better in the thermal department, That's it, No new architecture.
It's like going from a 3770K to a 4770K but with even less noticeable performance gain and no architectural change, Z97 is a pure cash grab i.e milking it to the extreme.

Don't see it this way at all. A newer chipset with updated features and support for 14nm chips isn't a cash grab, neither are improved chips aimed at overclocking. Sure those on 4770K don't need to worry about it, but it's nice for those thinking about upgrading this year from older stuff Sandybridge or older etc. Those guys will get the latest chipset with longevity and even better chips..

Way to much pessimism and negativity here imho. What have AMD done lately? Yet another bunch of rehashed APU's and oh yeah that's right nothing else :D

I'm still running a trusty 2500k so what you're saying rings true for me, if these refresh chips overclock well I will be very tempted.

I think you misunderstood me, I meant that going from a 4770K to this would be pointless and the performance gain would probably be less than going from a 3770K to a 4770K seeing as it's just a refresh of the existing architecture.
 
I dont know what to do i bought Z87 and let it sit for so long unopened and now Z97 is coming. But i think i am ok with that as 4770k might still overclock good for me and i can bypass the new Sata standard with a PCIE SSD when they mature.


Something like the Asus Raidr that is not crippled with gaming reads below an M4 drive. If the unlocked chips with new tim fit in the Z87 then very nice.

For the people that have the Z87 platform it wont be worth the switch, I read on another site, I think it was anandtech that he said and I'm paraphrasing here "Those on the Z87 really wont see much of a performance boost switching to Z97".
It's all really about the tiny amount of lower heat output and the M.2 SSD interface.
Keep the Z87 and upgrade to Broadwell and then you will see actual gains.
