Intel Haswell Refresh Processors Codenamed Devil’s Canyon – Launching in Mid 2014 With Unlocked Desi

Upgrading in a month or 2. I might just go for the refreash i7-4790K. I can't wait for x99 and ddr4, but tbh I don't think ddr4 is going to be a huge leap any ways. Just a reason to sell over priced RAM. I'll go refreash and upgrade in a few years to what ever is new in a few years time. I doubt we'll see many games using more then 4 cores. .... when x99 releases everything for the chipset with be wayyyyy overpriced. Don't be a sucker and buy into the x99 hype. Wait a year or two...just my opinion

The 4790k and any of the haswell refresh K series cpu's we won't see until Q3 of this year, that's August / September time, it's just the bog standard haswell refresh coming out next month.

+1 agree with DDR4 as a cash milking RAM machine

If you need an upgrade, might as well go for the refresh as it is new (unless it sells for an extortionate amount).

Its lame but i can see these new 'k' chips creeping closer to the x79 price bracket and the x99 set ups going up a notch in costs. I hope i am just being paranoid.

I hope so too mate. If they keep raising prices I'll just sell up and go console gaming. Don't want to go console, but these prices are forcing my hand? Can't afford these expensive updates every 2 years.

Well there goes my thoughts of slotting a refresh in to possibly replace my 4700K. My HeroVI is less than a year old and I have only recently put my water-cooling loop back in to use, so no chance of me stripping down and replacing mobo for a refresh chip.

I am sure I read that a couple of manufacturers (Gigabyte and Asus) latest BIOS versions had mentioned support for upcoming 4th gen cpu's. I presume that is for the non-K chips? In which case, Intel are really ripping the proverbial.

Intel Core "Haswell" Refresh CPUs Launch Date Revealed

It looks like Intel will launch its Core "Haswell" Refresh line of processors sooner than Computex 2014. According to sources in the IT retail, Intel could launch these new chips, led by the Core i7-4790K, on May 10th in most markets. An armada of new socket LGA1150 motherboards, based on Intel's Z97 Express chipset should launch around those dates, probably in the week leading up to the 10th. Intel Core "Haswell" Refresh processors offer marginally better performance over current Core "Haswell" chips, at existing price points (i.e., they will displace existing chips from their current price-points); while the 9-series chipset offers features such as M.2 SSD support, making you ready for a tidal wave of 1000 MB/s SSDs that will launch around Computex.

The only exciting thing about this chip launch is actually just the motherboards to accompany them. I am going to guess these new SSDs that take advantage of the new motherboards will cost a bomb per gb.

I am mainly excited to see what new colours are on the next wave of motherboards (please give me a funky purple one).

Yeah the mobo's should be nice, Z97 should be good for a long while yet as well. With upcoming Broadwell on 14nm next year.

Hmm, so many options Z79 / X99.. Determined to not spend any money ! Let's see how long my resilience lasts :p Probably be the first on here with Z97 and 4790K :D

Waiting for this news. I'm on 3770k. Upgrading when this chip releases. I'll be there from the start f or 4790k:p. Good news indeed boom :)

My i5 3570k runs kinda hot even after a delid, so I would be well tempted to upgrade if I can sell my current i5 for about the same price as the new ones, as it normally seems to be with Intel.

I was just reading through this regarding haswell-refresh CPU's, posted 22 hours ago, so its very new news, one particular point I picked up on was this sentence.

"The first chip which is expected to become available is the Intel Core i7-4790K (not just in Japan but in other major markets). As the chips arrive they are expected to replace older Haswell models rather than complement them, offering improved performance at existing prices. Notably the new 9-Series motherboards feature enhancements such as fast M.2 SSD support. Please have a click through the slides to check through the features of the new processors and chipsets."

although there's no mention on 8 series chipsets, if the refresh is going to completely replace the old haswell CPU's, then surely they will work on 8 series chipsets too ? although everything ive read up until now states the K series wont, I guess what I mean is the current line-up of haswell CPU's is going to completely disappear and be replaced by the refresh, surely they're not going to leave people with 8 series boards without any enthusiast CPU's they can use, I mean, hell, you can still buy sandybridge and ivybridge enthusiast CPU's.

It would certainly seem ridiculous for Intel to discontinue the K series processors for use on Z87 chipset. Certainly there is no way I am upgrading my HeroVI for at least 18-24 months, and it would be nice to know there was a possible upgrade path within that time-frame. I would give a 4790K a go and see if I seen any improvements tbh. Don't think it would cost all that much with a decent clocking 4770K to sell.

I think the haswell k refresh will not run on z87, Intel is bound to make them z97 exclusive to shift boards. Z87 has had a very short life indeed.

That does make sense, but not very fair on people who went out and brought there 8 series, basically means we will have no K series chips for our boards, as the 4770k is going, Intel will make money on the 9 series anyway and then especially when broadwell comes out. I don't know why they have to keep coming out with these new sockets and chipsets all the time anyway, the changes are only ever very minor, look how long AMD stick to one socket like the AM3, why cant intel just do that, even 1 pin change from 1156 to 1155 was ridiculas.

I did spot this earlier on one of the slides though, im hoping its all refresh CPU's its on about, I will grab one anyway, if it doesn't work ill just send it back and pay a small re-stocking fee, I still think the 8 series will work with the refresh k series CPU's though, after all, what are they going to do with all the 8 series overclocking boards, send them all back to supplier ? no one is going to buy any if you cant get an overclocking chip for them.

One part says supported by 8 and 9 series chipsets, but footnote one says " targeting compatability with 9 series chipsets" and if you look in the key features section, the Unlocked processor options has a little 1 by it, not a good sign, looks like Intel device protection with boot guard (whatever that is) will only work with 9 series as per footnote 2.

I am still on a q6600 build and was looking into upgrading soon. Would I be better off just waiting a little longer and going for a z97 and Haswell refresh? Ive waited this long, so a month or so more wont hurt. I'm a gamer and will have a dabble at overclocking, but not going for any records.

Will current ram still work ok with the new boards? I've just bought a set of the Kingston beast 8gb that was on offer.
