MOAR LENS!

I'm bored :(

I may buy one of those pop up backgrounds (like inflatable mattresses) and get some stands and another flash. Seen a lot of people claiming to be portrait photographers with that and entry level cameras recently. Oddly a taxi driver told me to be a wedding photographer at the weekend when he picked me up from the last gig I did. Not sure how the two link mind you :D

Some of my photos just popped up online. They've been squished a bit by resizing and compression it seems. http://louderthanwar.com/focus-wales-photos/

Someone on another board has said that the 35mm is a storyteller lens and it's very true. The majority of shots you see taken with it for people/street tell a story. the 3dness of in focus subjects just amplifies that too.

That is true yes but the 35mm focal length on a film or full frame body has a look that no other lens can deliver - I've said it before but it's one of the main reasons I've always been fond of that format.

Yes I agree. What is needs more often than not is context, I've said that a while ago.

35mm is nice because you get a bit of the surroundings in that sets the story without too much to muddle. The main subject is your lead actor and the surrounding is what helps the story.

I said something on this back in 2006 lol

Obviously it depends on the scene, sometimes 24mm is best, something's it's too much.

Yeah I think we all understand that! My point is that 35mm stands out the most considering what the majority of people use 35mm to shoot and for that purpose they too understand where that focal length excels and that's what I'm on about. It's the very reason I got interested in it when seeing people's photos in magazines, books and online before I even knew what a 35mm prime lens was.

As in, to me the 35mm prime lens does something special that for its uses, no other lens can manage. Yes 24mm might be better for some shots but a 35mm shooter won't be using a 24mm for what he or she uses a 35mm for, I'm not sure if you're understanding the angle I'm coming from. Same goes for 50 or 85. The 35 gets used most by those wanting to make viewers feel like they're in the frame rather than viewing it and that's the kind of story telling that I mean.

Then what had taken you so long to get one? :p

My shooting style and experience had to evolve to warrant it and Sigma not releasing one until less than a year ago. I don't tend to buy stuff until I've reached a level I'm happy with nor will I buy a lens that will only get used a couple of times a year, been through that phase early on, wasted a lot of money.

In the context of the Sigma, the only thing the 35L has going for it is weather sealing really.

Not saying the 35L is a poor lens at all - it's excellent, just that the Sigma is better by all accounts. Not worth swapping I wouldn't have thought if you already have the 35L (hi Ray :) ) but, if buying a new 35 f/1.4, it's a bit of a no brainer.

Contrary to popular belief, only a certain number of L lenses are weather sealed, most once a front filter is screwed on!

From FM board:

A complete list of all current production EF lenses with weather sealing, as of 2011, follows:

EF 16-35/2.8L II USM*
EF 17-40/4L USM*
EF 24-70/2.8L USM*
EF 24-105/4L IS USM*
EF 28-300/3.5-5.6L IS USM
EF 70-200/4L IS USM
EF 70-200/2.8L USM**
EF 70-200/2.8L IS II USM
EF 70-300/4-5.6L IS USM
EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS USM**
EF 200-400/4L IS USM 1.4x Ext
EF 14/2.8L II USM
EF 24/1.4L II USM*
EF 50/1.2L USM*
EF 100/2.8L IS macro USM*
EF 200/2L IS USM
EF 300/2.8L IS USM
EF 300/2.8L IS II USM
EF 300/4L IS USM**
EF 400/2.8L IS USM
EF 400/2.8L IS II USM
EF 400/5.6L USM**
EF 500/4L IS USM
EF 500/4L IS II USM
EF 600/4L IS USM
EF 600/4L IS II USM
EF 800/5.6L IS USM

* Must use a front filter to complete sealing. Some lenses not marked with a (*) may also require a filter.
** Not complete weather sealing; mount lacks the rubber gasket.

Discontinued lenses are not shown in this list.
