Sigma 35mm f1.4....?!!

Saying you should shoot wide open is like saying you should always shoot at 1/250th of a second or always use ISO 400.

exactly.

You should always shoot at the aperture that gives the DoF required and desired, that might be f/16, f/4 or f/1.4 and anything between or even narrower.

One of the worst mistakes I see is people shooting everything wide open just because they can and get an effect they couldn't replicate on their P&S. There are times and places to shoot wide open, there are times and places to stop things right down, there are times and places where middle apertures (f/4.0-f/8) make the most sense. Pick the aperture to achieve the desired outcome.

Even i don't shoot wide open all the time :p

Look! F/14 ! ;)

Ta, another F/14. I actually have a pano of this to be stitched when i get back. I don't dare trying to do it on my old C2D MBP.

tbh i was only kidding :D:D:D:D:D

im too experience to actually believe in saying a load of tosh LOL ;)

shooting at f1.4 on a FF is challenging by itself and i dont always shoot at that aparture.

:)

As soon as I saw that news the other day I immediately put on hold my want of the 50mm :D

I've been covering Focus Wales this week, mainly with my 35mm to force me to use things differently. Bit easier as I have a press pass for every venue in the area :D It is definitely a very nice lens and feels more like the 85L when using it.

On a side note, I discovered something new last night. Magenta LED lighting directly pointed at you, makes AF not work. AT ALL. Never experienced that before with normal magenta lighting (my mates band had normal lighting and LED but it's never been an issue before) but last night by a stage, it wouldn't even hunt for focus in a small region like you usually see in that event, but just went fully back and forth. I thought the 35 art was at fault so switched to my 85L whilst cursing the lens, thinking I'd have to sell it, and the same thing happened. When I came to process the photos this morning, they were all showing a colour missing from the exposure, as if it was a shadow.

Tried to replicate it tonight with another mates lighting set up and two separate gigs lighting, but nothing. I need to find out what the lights were at the event last night!

Both at f1.4 from last weeks Wedding. Not got around to going through all of them yet I'm sure I'll have more to add over the weekend as I pretty much kept the 35mm on all day.

Cool. Really nice venue, wasn't a fan of the dance floor area however. Looks a little new build compared to the awesome features in the rest of the barn!

They flip the dance floor back and forth.

Once they had it in the big open barn bit, the other time they had it in the loe ceiling part. I am not sure who decides.

Have to say I'm loving this 35 art now. As I mentioned the other night, it really feels more like the 85L the way it reacts. Done 7 bands and some other stuff over the last 3 nights, and annoyingly we were supposed to interview Gary Delaney last night but something went wrong and it's had to be rescheduled. His stand up is ace :D

Now I've got to go back out to an art exhibition, and maybe a few more gigs. I'm knackered! Oh and Norman Lovett is here too, so I'll see if I can get in there. He's at comic con here tomorrow too.
