for now trackIR, and the X55 HOTAS are fine.

How do you find the TrackIR then in helping make it more immerse?

As much as I like the idea of the Oculus, the fact all your other visibility is taken away (eg: of keyboard/mouse/joystick) would seem to be a big -ve!

Mind blowing. I use it for arma originally but it's equally epic in ED DCS and such. Best you can get until OR gets going. Its a tried and proven product.

Absolutely it's as natural as moving your head despite the acceleration. With a hood profile it takes 5 minutes to adjust to and you'll never look back. The degrees of freedom in ED are lacking compared with other sims mainly because you don't have much side or forward lean bit you have yaw pitch roll perfect.

I'm not sure I'd buy trackIR just for elite. If the game was finished and had all it was going to offer and I was a hardcore player then certainly. If you play other sims like fsx war thunder arma DCS etc then it's a no brained. GET IT. But for purely elite and in this early stage I don't know. If money isn't a massive factor then go ahead but if you're on a tight budget the money may be better spent on a HOTAS first.

Hard to say really id never want to play without trackIR and I get really miffed when a game doesn't have it! But at the same time it depends how invested you want to get into elite. If you're a more casual player once in a while it could be somewhat of a waste of money. If you have a good high FPS webcam maybe try facetrackNoIR first to see how you like it and if it gels with you. Grab the proper thing.

TrackIR 5 is in the £140 area. Maybe less I forget exactly what I paid. Get the one with a proclip (attaches to yur headphones)

I thought lots of people were reporting the proclip keeps breaking, and also if you move your head to a high angle, the LEDs go out of site due to their housing?

The proclip is fragile but I don't throw £200 headphones around! I offset my sensor to the left of my screen to get best visibility of the sensor on the left of my head. If you're looking up so high to lose IR visibility then you're also looking at the ceiling and not he screen. This is where setting up a proper axis profile works wonders. You want smaller movement towards your central point and a steeper curve as you move to the extremities.

I don't understand why TrackIR costs so much, or why there isn't a cheaper generally available alternative!?

I've just ordered up a cheap thrustmaster and Elite.

Now I need to wait on the stick arriving. fail.

Saitek's were all out of stock (and 5x the price lol)

There is an alternative to the track clip pro called the Delanclip, search it on a well known auction site, works great with Track IR

TrackIR will need to reduce their price to remain in existence when OR hits our shelves. £50 id say. For a nice presented package over a home brew solution. 150 is a bit cheeky. Still love it though! And have no regrets buying it.

I tried FaceTrackNoIR with ED but hated it, it kinda made me a bit car-sick. Never experianced that with any game.....anyhow, suffice to say I binned it. I felt it didn't add anything to the game.

Did you try it with anything else? eg: Flight sim?

Not sure how you can suggest it didn't bring anything to the game, when surely it brings the immersion of being able to freely look around. Which in itself must be very useful during combat?
