1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Considering my i7 920 would barely reach 3.6, this is a pretty vast improvement i'm seeing for very little outlay (I've made 935 on Cinebench).

Best £60 i've spent in a while I think and thumbs up to this thread for planting the idea in my head :)

Can you chaps share your full memory/multiplier/etc settings please? I'm expecting my Xeon on Monday and using the same motherboard as you.

I've got the Asus Sabertooth here as well.

I would be interested to know the bios settings you use when you're up and running.
 
Got my rig up and running tonight. :D

Well chuffed with 4.0Ghz and low temps with a low cost!

I could boot into windows at 1.28v but it bsod on IBT. 1.34v was my next step up but may lower it to see how low it will go. Damn happy with the temps too. Just need to get another stick of 4gb and it'll be even quicker!

I'm having a really frustrating time at the mo... my Windows 8.1 install keeps getting corrupted on my SSD for some strange reason. First time it happened was before I installed my X5675. It has happened 2 more times since and I cant pin down the cause. Getting really fed up with reinstalling everything...

Thanks for the welcome tribz. Yeah the RAM is at 1333Mhz currently and the system just wont boot on anything higher. I've tried upping the DRAM bus voltage but no joy. I got it all the way up to 1.7volts in 0.2 volt steps from the 1.5 volts specified for my RAM and got the same result every time. No boot. I've left most setting on auto but specified the DDR speed of 1600, DDR bus speed of 3200 (double the DDR speed as recommended in the bios) and then set the volts manually but it don't wana play.

Gone back to 1333mhz for now.
 
I got it up and running at 4ghz 20x200, 1600 ram, 1.325 v/core every thing else auto.
Booted into windows @ 4.4ghz 22x200, I think 4.4ghz will be easy to get stable, when I learn how to clock it proper lol.
Compared to the i7 950 this x5650 is a joy to tinker with, 950 would not do 4ghz and ran like a toaster.

How did you boot @22x on a 5650?
 
The turbo option is not there when I put the multi in manually, how do I check what the cores are doing Combat?
New to all this overclocking malarkey ;D

I'm not 100% sure to be honest, but I'm pretty sure I am right with the turbo its using speedstep.

ALXAndy seems to know his stuff and a lot about multi cores!
 
Hi guys sorry about the delay :)

It's been a while since I poked around, but I remember disabling EIST (speedstep basically) and it removed my turbo options also.

So Seth, try enabling EIST (or speedstep, whichever your motherboard lists it as...) and see if your turbo options return.
 
Board is a asus sabertooth
Turbo is on when multi is set to auto, then off when I input my own multi.
Updated bios to the latest one 1404.
 
Hmm odd, you've got one of the best X58 boards made there.

No idea then dude sorry. I've no experience of Asus X58 only MSI.
 
Cheers andy. yeh board seems to like this chip, I think 220 b/clock will be doable.
The i7 950 I replaced was a dog could not do 4ghz stable and far to hot.
 
Yeah I had a 950 like that. Bugger would run 88c in Prime when running 4ghz on a NHD-14..

I was super annoyed too, 'cause the 950 was supposed to be a guaranteed 4ghz.

IIRC BCLK is supposed to be down the board, with the Asus' and Gigas being the best. MSIs are known to brick wall around 200.
 
Very tempted to get in on this action.. currently running a 920 D0 at 3.2ghz (it's stable up to 3.8 but runs too hot for my liking) on an Asus P6T-SE.

Is a x5660 a significant upgrade? I was planning to get a 4970 but if this is similar performance at a much lower price I may jump on it.

6 cores, will clock faster and run cooler - for under 70 quid. Single threading won't get close to the 4970 but for anything else, defo worth it I'd say!
