Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I did consider the "baby beast" when I ordered mine, mostly because I liked the fact they were bright green!

I went for DYS 1806 in the end just because they were a bit cheaper and seemed to be well recommended

Not sure if anyone seen my last comment, with the F450 or F550 kit, specifically to soldering, is anyone using a flux pen before they solder? or is it not really needed.

Hi all, i'm looking for a bit of advice on my first quadcopter.....

I would like one with a camera, that is good enough quality to take still images from. As its my first quadcopter, i dont want to be spending silly money at the moment, but all i can see is the Hubsan x4's for about £50, then a massive jump up to the really expensive kit.

Is there anything in the middle? around £100-£150 that would offer an improvement over the x4?

It's not strictly necessary but it does make things easier. I always use a little dab of flux on everything before I solder.

You could probably get away without it, but I think its just good soldering practice really. Ensures you have the cleanest point possible for a good solder connection.

I have been using a flux pen and water soluble flux while building my F450.

There are lots of ready to fly quads under £150, but none that will take high quality stills as far as I know.

Have a read through of the thread, pretty much everything on here from £50 - £3k.

Seconded. So much so in fact, I'm onto my 3rd set

I've found the only issue with these smaller motors is that they won't take too much abuse before either the shaft bends or the bearings get sloppy enough to unbalance the motor.

Thanks, do you think a £2 jobby pen will do the job? I have seen some which are like £15?

Also, do you think the solder I am using will do the job? it cost £1 and is 17gr 60%tin and 40%lead stuff. Apparently multicore

Both should be fine. 17gr might be a little chunky for fine work.

It will be if you're soldering wires. Pins on a board might need something thinner. It doesn't really matter too much tbh. As long as you're not using plumbers solder :)

for what it's worth - i didn't use any flux on my Q450 and it's fine - ok, not the neatest soldering job as it was my first time in years soldering but it's all fine

Not sure if its worth just waiting a few days for some to arrive, although kind of annoying that not many placed I had hoped sell it on the high street, and when they do its like £10 a pop for a pen.

Otherwise I will be waiting until Thursday/Friday or next Monday on ebay.

Apparently B&Q say the one I posted above would do a similar job, will need to go and check out the product, not sure if I should be safe by using it or risk it. Sorry im a bit of a soldering noob, iv soldered but never used this stuff before.

That looks a ton of fun, can I ask what size battery's you guys use and flight times ?

I now use the Nanotech 1500mah 35-70c I still have a couple of 25-50c but they don't perform as well. Let me know when you get your 250 up and running and we can meet up.

A bit of flying from the weekend, I was not coping with the high winds too well and had to borrow an FPV screen as mine died!

I'm the one doing most of the crashing
