Spec me a CCTV System

The bigger the parcel (and if you want to go by DPD) the more it will attract the attention of occurring extra charges. An NVR is such a parcel, of size and value.

IMO an Hikvision NVR, whilst not cheap, is "neat" complete and compliments the functionality of the Hikvision cameras perfectly well and works a treat. All the commands in each camera are mirrored or usable without any issues. Less power consumption is also a consideration.

I have no regrets not using one of my HP microservers.

All I did was to buy a separate Netgear 8 port POE switch.

Thanks for the prompt reply, yes the NVR appeals as it would be neat etc, also ultimately could be isolated in subnet.
After reading the thread again I see a few people have indeed avoided hefty extras on delivery :)
Again, many thanks for posting throughout this thread, very helpful.

Have any of you guys used a separate IR to help with night operation?

I have a DS-2CD732F-IS at the front of the house covering that area and in particular an entrance across the road which leads to other propery of mine and at night the camera might aswell be turned off as the IR is awful. Can't see anything of use unless a car drives past and lights the area up.

I don't want an outside light on all the time but I've heard of some people using a separate IR which I don't know much about hence why I ask.

anyone got any varifocal IP cameras cheaper than HIKvison and works great? HIKvision ones are over £110 and wondered if there were any other alternatives?

Thanks

Got myself a cheap Tenvis TH692 720p wireless IP camera to monitor my front driveway as im away quite a lot.
Ive set everything up and its working fine except for the picture quality.

The right hand side of the picture is really high def and very very clear but the left hand side of the picture isnt as clear and i would say not 720p. You cant make out detail on anything on the left hand side.

Is this faulty do you think? or just down to the low cost censor in the camera?.
Need to work out if its worth uninstalling, packing up and the return postage cost.

Apologies for potentially "necroing" an old (?) thread but I am in need of help here.

I want to fit 4 cameras to our house (driveway, side door, front door, garden essentially) and I had two so called firms come around now and the first one has now come back and he quoted me £1800 to a Swann 720p 1TB 8 Channel NVR Kit with 4 Bullet Cameras which I thought was ridiculous from what (little?) research I had done and from what I read on this post.

Could someone (Vimes?) please help me spec a decent system?

I don't need the absolute top range stuff obviously as this is for a private residential property and we have an intruder alarm as well but I do not want to buy cheap rubbish either which would not provide me with CCTV footage that is actually usable.

Wow thank you so much! Do you mind me asking how much you paid for your setup? How much should I expect to shell out for a "good" system?

Is this the exact same hikvision you linked above? According to the model number it is but it is A LOT cheaper than anywhere else in the UK it seems?

See what I mean about asking more questions - lol......

Yes it is the same model and as noted some prefer a UK dealer over that of an import, you work out which is better for you etc,

My set-up is based on six cameras and a lot of other kit which would not be the same as what you would need. But take a look at what you require and start to add up the cost. Mine cost less that half of what you have been quoted for a far superior system recording at 1080p and 4TB of storage on a AV drive.

This is the NVR I bought....

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Hikv...-case-HDMI-NVRSupport-4-Ports/1670267958.html

.... I deliberated for a long time whether to use an HP NL54 server or go the NVR route and if I was doing it again I would still buy and NVR.

Like I noted I have given you the link to two excellent forums and in my opinion you really need to be reading long and hard as what I post is merely an opinion and reading what others write will balance that and increase your own knowledge and understanding.

Good luck

I also use any web browsr to access adn manage the cameras and NVR. I also use iVMS 4500 client to inspect my CCTV's from my android phone or tablet, ovr the Internet or Wi-Fi.

I enjoy the above and it meets my needs. I like having all Hikvision products and the software is easy enough to use and quite configurable.

Thank you for this info! I've got a Hikvision set-up (3 cameras wired to a NVR). I was unsure how to view the feeds from a phone/tablet - i'll take a look at the 'iVMS client'.

A up folks !!!

Read a small amount of this thread, seems people have got tech fever and only recommending overly priced jumped up OTT systems (it is a tech forum I suppose!! lol :p)

All you really need is a quad core 8 thread PC, 8gb ram, 2tb surveillance hard drive.

Put ispy on it (free)

Get your self as many POE HD 720/960p off ebay as you like (outdoor IR cams £30, spot on, running mine and older non HD versions for a good 5-6 years now, never failed - even got some plastic indoor cams running outside in the shed, sub zero temps, dust covered, never missed a beat). Oh I use tplink POE router for POE cams, and the older ones just run off mains.

Job done, upload the footage to as well to a cloud account which can be had for about £3 a month.

All you need! :)

Just ordered my kit, just slightly influenced by this thread ;)

1 of these in 8channel form - http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6495150107.html?orderId=65790495456460

2 of these - http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6494149590.html?orderId=65798799886460

and the 4GB Western Digital Purple HD

Any recommended PTZ cam with POE for inside my house? Ideally Hikvision for simple setup and guaranteeing everything works?

Looking forward to getting it in a few weeks. The seller has also v kindly said to put a lowish value to help with taxes, fingers crossed!

Not heard anyone talking about using a synology nas for DVR duties. I run a 1815 unit and its fantastic, including apps for android and ios etc etc.

Running 2 x HIK 2132 3mp domes with it currently and it all works nicely. The HIK's are connected via solwise powerline POE's with distances over 50m.

On a slightly related note, would any of you cctv guys have any experience with birdbox type cameras?

The wife has a chicken house and wondering if I could add a suitable IP camera to my existing Swann setup that could be mounted in the chicken house to keep an eye on them at night.

I've seen plenty of dedicated solutions but would be great if we could add to the existing which is monitored via ipad/iPhone.

Since I signed up to OC 18 months ago or so I have read this thread twice and always read the new posts and repies - Over time I have come to understand how it works - There is one point I am confused on and that's cabling - I will be looking at 4 cameras to start with and after reading Vimes post I can also fit a POE switch in garage - I have a bungalow which makes cabling easier. - The bit I am lost on is what cable do I need from switch back to NVR on computer desk - I have a conduit in to garage from computer so one ethernet cable will be fine but anymore I will have to replace conduit with something like 30mm pipe.

I also will be running Ethernet to two bedrooms at same time so the switch will be handy for that.

But as I said what cables are required from switch to NVR and to PC and can I connect NVR to one of the existing monitors.

I know they are newby questions but can't seem to find wiring diagrams on net - My googling leaves a lot to be desired.

If its an IP NVR then all it needs is an ethernet connection. (to the same subnet as the IP cams). In the NVR you type in the IP address of each camera and the login details.
