Ukraine Invasion - Please do not post videos showing attacks/similar

^^ I dunno how much is rumour/conjecture/made up but apparently about 10 days ago a Ukraine heavy armour battalion (i.e. not volunteers or run of the mill soldiers) was sent down through there to break the stalemate at Donetsk was ambushed and almost entirely destroyed by what was described as a concerted attack from SF, regular army and air support i.e. not rebels. Supposedly the artillery barrage that apparently caused the big explosion was in retaliation fired at the positions where this force was supposed to have been last sighted with rumours they hit the parked supply "aid convoy" column attached to it (or a chemical plant).

I'll be very surprised if this ceasefire holds.

Sounds entirely possible. There are military forums out there that have picture threads for the crisis and unless its just the rebels have a better media game or not I'm not sure but the "destruction" pictures/videos are pretty one sided.

Interestingly there's also reports of MLRS and transports gathering in the north of crimea.

I hope the EU is preparing the rest of its borders. It will be a shame if the ceasefire doesn't hold, but I don't expect it to with Putin pulling the strings on the other side. I hope we are heavily arming Ukraine.

AFAIK its non-lethal and "defensive" aid that is going to Ukraine.

Been a lot of preparation in Poland but dunno about anywhere else - I was lolling a bit at the numbers being talked about in the exercises in Poland but then looking up the actual active numbers for Russia's military it would actually be a fairly costly fight for them (pure numbers game).

and a US Ambassador for ukraine has just posted this from Debaltseve, saying they are confident they are not rebel units but russians >

That "US Ambassador" was already found to be posting old images and screencaps from Youtube for his propaganda.

Yup, a few of the former USSR states found that out after Georgia and started ordering anti armour rockets by the 10s of thousands. Shame Ukraine didn't do the same thing.

Its not until 10pm UK time - I can't see it holding - more likely Putin agreed to it so as to use it as a justification for going in heavy when "Ukraine" breaks the agreement.

While not an unusual precaution Russia has been pulling back and reinforcing sizeable amounts of mechanised infantry in strategic locations on the border over the last couple of days.

Then it is inevitable that the U.S. will arm the Ukraine. Goodnight Russia and rebels in the region when that happens.

Not actually an issue. Doesn't matter how old the photos may be if they are genuine, nor does it discount the rest of the photos which arnt from him.

We'll see how it goes.

Hopefully they do it soon or it won't matter. I would like to see US tech against the 'new' Russian equipment :)

Can't help but think the EU should stand up as well.

How much annual leave do their forces get..?
Unlimited as long as they can take their work and work away from home. Inspired flexitime policy.

Edit + Two quotes for you.
Kremlin advisor..
But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russia's state-run RIA Novosti on Friday that while Russia had helped to bring about the Minsk agreement, it wasn't in its power to fulfill it "because Russia is not a participant in the conflict."

US Ambassador -
Geoffrey Pyatt, the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, tweeted Saturday that the separatists "now have larger fighting force with more tanks armored vehicles, heavy artillery & rocket systems than some NATO and European countries."

Putin wants Kiev to fire first, so he can legitimise an actual invasion, under the guise of saving the russians in Ukraine.

The question is, since this is a magnitude more important for NATO than most other arguments...how will we respond.

Well lads. its lasted 2 hours max apparently (reports of earlier shelling at 0.25am as well)

Pro-Russian militants violate Minsk II. Shelled UA positions near #Zolote, #Sanzharivka, #Popasna, #Chornukhine by 2 am

You do understand that any piece of equipment that has potential to change the tide in the war is extremely complicated?

Even the "Javelin" that has been thrown around here, is a very complicated piece of equipment, its hardly your RPG-7 and requires 2 trained men to operate.

If we give Ukraine lets say Abrams or Leopard 2 or Patriot AA system... This will give Russians excuse to give their T-90`s and S-400`s... Only difference is that Russian trained personnel will be sitting behind those systems, while NATO equipment will be operated by someone who possibly cannot even read English.

I bet Putin wouldn't have seized Crimea if Ukraine had kept their nuclear weapons.

Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances (Taken from wikipedia)

  1. Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty within its existing borders.
  2. Refrain from the threat or use of force against Ukraine.
  3. Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine in order to influence its politics.
  4. Seek immediate United Nations Security Council action to provide assistance to Ukraine, "if Ukraine should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used".
  5. Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against Ukraine.
  6. Consult with one another if questions arise regarding these commitments.
