AMD - What can they do to improve?

For a company on the back foot, AMD need to get their priorities right. Communication and Crossfire support should be at the top with development of TressFX technologies at the bottom.

Actually I think you all have misread the situation. Here's my take;

*For months before GDC all sorts of leaks surfaced about AMD's "next big thing" - it was all over the net - leaked benches, speculation over what it was exactly...

*AMD said that they were going to do "something crazy" at GDC - Nvidia took note, and this is important because Nvidia knew AMD had something special, they just didn't know when they would release or reveal.

*GDC arrives and AMD gets all coy, on or about the date and time everyone was speculating that AMD would pull the 390 out of the bag, Nvidia announce and reveal KEY details about their trump card, the Titan X

*AMD do NOTHING crazy, and continue to say NOTHING at GDC

*Nvidia CEO is right now chewing the absolute **** out of his fingernails because he's let his hubris bluff him into revealing his hand first

*AMD are now aware of what the trump hand was to be and are acting accordingly, meanwhile Nvidia are committed to releasing the mutton gun card with a dilemma - What if 390 is faster or equal? do we release a 980ti that will be several months away in production stream? Or do we start now and cannibalize sales of the Titan while ****ing off the early adopters?

I think AMD have played Nvidia like fools in this round - if you doubt me look around all of the forums and observe all the nail biting and indecision going on over whether to spend on the Titan or wait...

Regardless, AMD will take the strategic victory because the 390 will be better bang for buck if not faster outright, early Titan adopters will get hosed and the hate for Nvidia will build again, while AMD again look great for bringing the price bar down and the performance bar up - and there will be no immediate answer from Nvidia like the 780ti.

Just my .02

My thought exactly. Having something "as fast as" the Titan X and even at £200 cheaper, the Nvidia will still have Titan X will still out-sell AMD's offering 3:1...the situation WON'T change! As I have already mentioned on the 1st page, what they really need is:
IMO marketing alone will NEVER change people's image of Nvidia being better, regardless how much AMD improve their own image...what they need a "facts/action speaks louder than words".

What AMD need to pull off is similar to when they introduced the original Athlon CPUs, or what ATI did when they released the 5000 series, and give a huge system shock to the market.

Although I seriously doubt they can pull it off, but if they can somehow, someway pull off releasing their next card being significantly faster than the Titan X and cheaper, it would serious mess up Nvidia's grant plan of selling their fastest card the Titan X at crazy price level and grim it down become different products to fit into difference (overpriced) price bracket...it will throw them right back to the drawing board on what to do next rather than the milking they've been counting on.

Marketing, marketing and more marketing. They have been and are very good cards, but there is a perception that if you can get similar frame rates for slightly more money from nVidia then that's a better option - or the people who think gaming card=nVidia

It's not just a perception though that's their main problem, fanboys can argue that AMD drivers are as good as NVidia (as they have done for about 15yrs now) until they are blue in the face but ultimately people will buy their cards and experience the reality for themselves. It's not just their driver support either it's the fact that AMD have very little to do with most games in development (compared to NVidia) which hurts their gaming experience.

What i will say is a lot of people who want a top end card like titan/390x will get whats out first and what is certain, 390x could be great or terrible we dont know. Plus i'd say Nvidia would like to shift stock before the die shrink, thats end of the yearish isnt it?

I can't speak for multi GPU setups, though I do genuinely think SLI is better than CrossFire even though CrossFire has catched up a lot lately. But for single GPU, I have switched from one to another many times and did not see any difference.

That said AMD really need to go back to monthly driver updates. No excuses on this one.

True, after all a lot of people who waited for Bulldozer ended up getting burned. :D

I'm not quite sure that's true, the 390x will be at a different price point to the Titan X, people who are waiting to pay around £500 for the 390x are unlikely to cough up the extra £300+ to buy the Titan X.

As Kaap previously said the 390x will likely outsell the Titan X around 5:1. Only true enthusiasts or those with money to burn will buy the Titan X on release.

I agree NVidia were trying to steal AMD's Thunder with the Titan X announcement.

For all we know, AMD may have planned to announce the 390, but changed their mind after NVidia jumped the gun with the Titan X.

Any which way, AMD are in a reasonable position now, knowing Nvidia's hand and having a rather unknown quantity in the 390 due to HBM.

Nvidia have countered this before finishing their card by adding as much RAM as possible, so that they will always have the advantage..............performance? it's fairly obvious that a 390X will be about the same as a TITAN X, because the max figure is about 50 to 60% more than a previous generation gpu, but deffo not 100% more like some were saying here.

so both cards maxed out will be about the same, leaving only RAM and Price, the most critical at 4k will be RAM and even at only 1080p.....soon

the 390X weakness will therefore be a massive lack of RAM.......this HBW RAM at only 4GB is too early, it needs to be next year at 8GB

price is of no importance, because you can change this instantly, but i expect the 390X needs major realtering, hence AMD have gone DEAD SILENT

That logic doesn't really work.
It's not like they can drop what they were doing and release another GPU etc.

Also, when's the last time AMD ever released a flagship single GPU and ever launched a higher one? Last to me was the 4890.

They can however change things like clock speeds which could make all the difference.

*For months before GDC all sorts of leaks surfaced about AMD's "next big thing" - it was all over the net - leaked benches, speculation over what it was exactly...Mindless gossip

*AMD said that they were going to do "something crazy" at GDC - Nvidia took note, and this is important because Nvidia knew AMD had something special, they just didn't know when they would release or reveal. - Do you have any evidence that NVidia knows AMD have something special ?

*GDC arrives and AMD gets all coy, on or about the date and time everyone was speculating that AMD would pull the 390 out of the bag, Nvidia announce and reveal KEY details about their trump card, the Titan X - NVidia continue to reveal to their customer base, new and exciting cards.

*AMD do NOTHING crazy, and continue to say NOTHING at GDC - thats the type of company they are

*Nvidia CEO is right now chewing the absolute **** out of his fingernails because he's let his hubris bluff him into revealing his hand first - You have proof of that, even with no proof, Nvidia are hardly chewing their fingernails, they are counting the green, thats a fact.

- you honestly believe that AMD releasing say a 390X right now would cannibalize sales of the Titan X? lol you're funny bud.

I think AMD have played Nvidia like fools in this round - if you doubt me look around all of the forums and observe all the nail biting and indecision going on over whether to spend on the Titan or wait... lol

My response in bold.

Just to add, companies dont advertise that they have 'something crazy' to their fans then risk letting them down by showing nothing. That's not a way to treat your customer base.

It's like a repeat from the first Titan launch.

"AMD will beat Titan at half the cost"

Never really happened though. Even now the Titan trades blows with a 290X in games.

Rarely happens (Ever) happens, it's sometimes not viable (Like if the cooler is designed to certain spec, they want it to be a certain spec, changing clock etc will change the spec)

Yea makes sense but if they went on the low side with clocks like they did with the 7970/50 they could in theory adjust things without much hit to said specs.

these geeks will be messing around with the 390X in R&D all day long..changing it...retesting it...trying this..trying that, Engineers rarely finish things early, they are usually late at deadline day.

this card has no fixed specs at all, they have two months left to finish it, we have no idea what it'll be like, because it's only too late once it's gone out the door.

You only got burnt if you were stupid enough to invest into a 990 chipset before seeing reviews of bulldozer, in particular once the boards were released a few months before the delayed bulldozer cpu release date

Neverless it was very embarrassing and underwhelming for such a long wait.
