Farage has always said he's a libertarian (something I'm not) and what could be more libertarian than allowing employers to employ whomever they want. Realistically how many jobs do you think are going to say something like "no Irish need apply" if the law were modified as Farage suggests?

Come on, the law change he proposed address only one (airquotes)problem(/airquotes): "too much hiring is based on merit and skill - it is unfair that the employer cannot discriminate".

The proposed fix is "I may not be able to allow you to discriminate based on colour of their skin but under my powers you'll be able to discriminate based on place of their birth".

There is literally no other scenario than the Nigel given right to "no Irish/Polish/Bongo-bongo need apply" plaques tackled in what he said. Are you seriously going to defend this one?

We know a man who would :p

Is he not back from his suspension yet?

No I think Nigel has dropped the ball on this one, the problem isn't not being able to favour British workers it's that some employers are currently getting away with openly discriminating against British workers e.g. all applicants for the warehouse job must be fluent Polish speaker. I suppose I would support the English language being protected by employment law i.e. all applicants required to be fluent in English for a job in the UK. You wouldn't get a job in Poland if you can't speak Polish that's for sure.

Do we actually have a documented example of such discrimination (preferably on a wider scale - ie. not a single case of dishwasher job advertised via "must speak Polish") ?

As it stands two people apply for the job, equal skills etc, one British one Polish.

Tell me why the employer cant choose either one?

Please point me to the law that says the employer has to pick a specific one.

Even more libertarian, ignore immigration entirely and let a completely free and uncontrollered migration of people with market economics resolve th situation. Farge is the exact oposite of a Libertarian, as is the UKIP. There are no borders in a libertarian society, no immigration policies, no anti-gay policies, and a reduction in the police state with removal of excessive prison sentences.

Most British people don't speak fluent English so that I would rule out a great many people from applying. It is also completely arbitrary and pointless. Why should so done hired as, e.g. A French to German translator need to speak fluent English?

And you are wrong, you can certainly get a job in Poland without speaking a word of polish.

and the tiny detail - all those job adverts are in English...

So let's look at this job for a guest room cleaner in West Kensington: http://www.gumtree.com/p/housekeepi...ian-or-russian-or-polish-speaking-/1103780205

You're quite right that speaking English is a requirement of the job, but so is the ability to speak Russian, Lithuanian or Polish. Why? What possible reason do you need a cleaner who can speak one of these languages in the UK? I suggest that the advert might as well say "Cleaner required - Russian, Lithuanian or Polish nationals only" because any UK national who is fluent in one of those languages probably isn't going to be working as a cleaner.
