I think a lot of people are perhaps missing the shortcut near the boss back to the lamp. That article read as if he was doing the whole level each time. Its easy to miss but i would recommend everyone explore as much as possible and it may save time
That’s great, except that this game severely punishes exploration.
I like exploring and uncovering new areas on my own.
question... why has the vender items doubled in price all of a sudden? is it level releated?
Except there are massive short cuts you unlock, yet apparently this game doesn't reward exploration according to him? Perhaps if he had explored he'd have found that there is a 30 seconds route to get to the first boss?
It's sad to see this gaming 'caste system' that is appearing, similar to PC v Console one. There seem to be a group of people who think this series is only for the most hardcore of gamers and are so quick to dismiss any negativity as simply the ravings of those who find it too hard.
There are different levels of hard, some of the PC strategy games I've tried to play are way beyond any "simple" hack and slash mechanics of an action RPG. So to brand everyone who doesn't like it as defeatist etc is silly.
The comments in that article speak volumes, the writer wrote concise and perfectly valid reasons why he didn't like it and then the frothing at the mouth gamers started with the kind of trash that most associate with this hobby.
A lot of his 'perfectly valid reasons' are simply false and he hasn't actually spent the time with the game or engaged his brain whilst playing it to figure out why. If he spent 12 hours trying to get the first boss down and didn't unlock the shortcut, which is essentially the 'check-point' he is gagging for right before the boss he is either lying about his time invested, incredibly bad or simply lazy and actually doesn't like exploring or doing anything but following a linear path. That's not labelling someone a defeatist or whatever, he's simply doing his job poorly and misinforming. For what its worth though I think Cleric Beast is an incredibly bad design wise, especially as a first fight, Gascoigne would've been better.
Also the series isn't remotely for the most hardcore, in fact the games are relatively simple once you get the mechanics down, much easier than the old NES/SNES era games where you basically learn from repetition and timing.
I admit I suck but then I'm still enjoying it despite this, I don't find the boss fight I'm on to be predictable enough to have consistent improvement on each try and I'm struggling massively with the camera.
I tried without the lock on but then I was missing like a complete tool so had to flick between modes. I probably could buy a few molotovs to make it easier but I don't feel that's the way I want to play.

And a lot of them aren't so what, especially when he says about the rewards from harder games. That said, the whole article does reek of frustration. Not sure if you played it but when I was about 8 I had a game on the NES called Bayou Billy, I made it out the first level once, got to the second and you needed the Zapper gun which I didn't have![]()
That fight is horrible, I died more on that boss + the third one than the entire rest of the game combined, although the third one is more fair, that fight is absolutely garbage.
I still think you'd be best without lock on, never engage it when its near a wall, you want to be able to go around either side of it without issue.
Everyone sucks generally when they start Souls games, but this is definitely the hardest start of the four.
I beat it on 3rd attempt, have you tried levelling up a couple of levels and upgrading your weapon slightly? makes it a lot easier.
With the cleric beast, you cant get greedy. 1 or 2 hits at most from behind before retreating and start again. make sure to use the 1st initial easy parry and riposte which takes a quarter health down, and use a good few oil urns and molatovs which does significant damage.
I recall the first boss of Demon's Souls actually being a breeze but I only got that one and the second Tower Knight or something before I admitted defeat, the difference being that I was flitting in and out of games so if I persevered I do wonder what I'd have achieved. Also I did try a summon and it said something about a bell echoing but I never saw anyone come to help, I hung around about 15m.
Actually no I haven't because I read conflicting info about any difference it makes, some say any slight upgrade will prove advantageous and others say they're so minor it doesn't matter. Won't harm to try though, I got the upgraded armour at least and my axe currently has a +1.
Not sure what the oil urns do, I have a couple but not used them, do they make the Molotov do more damage?
My tactic is similar to what you said, I use the two shots to the face thing and then switch to two handed. I genuinely feel when I kill the thing it will be down to luck of how it decides to position itself.
later on in the game coming back to yharnam to farm blood vials is awesome. literally tear through everything. I remember when you first start throwing pebbles to lure out folk near the fire one at a time, now just run in and wreck everything without getting hit a single time.
When you get hit by the guys with the big sacks, the place they bring you is good for echoes+vial farming, the visceral attacks on the pigs is pretty disgusting![]()
Tower Knight was quite tricky
