Amazon Fire TV

So would a stick stream an MKV file from my server to the TV it was connected too over wifi with no transfer issues?

Every room in house has Cat6 sockets but stick is cheaper.

Just got my FireStick up and running. Previously been using my PS3 to stream Netflix and AmazonLoveFilm.

Couple of weird bits of the box:
- Couldn't get the HDMI extender to work. Seemed to have a connection issue as it was just a fuzzy mess. Plugged the unit directly into my AV system and it worked fine
- Tested 2 or 3 TV series to verify the quality, and it was truly awful visually, like watching VHS again. Fiddled around a bit, (NOT with the visual settings, which I'd already put at 1080p) and for some reason, it sorted itself out and happily displayed HD.

All in all, around 20 mins and we're good to go. For the dosh, just a steal. I'll probably save that much a year in reduced electricity costs from not having to use the PS3.

I just signed up for amazon prime a few days ago which includes the amazon Prime Instant Video
And I was hoping someone could help me choose which one of these to buy ?

Amazon Fire TV £79 = http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455333147&pf_rd_i=468294
Fire TV Stick £35 = http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455333147&pf_rd_i=468294

And will they work ok by plugging it into the back of an AV receiver ?
(PS Am also have Netflix which I would like to be able to use this for displaying as well..)

amazon is in direct competition with netflix therefore their products will not run it obviously.

if you want a product that runs both netflix and amazon prime then your looking at a third party box which supports both or something like a ps4 which i believe supports both.

i run prime from my pc which i have connected to my tv. that way i can watch anything fuss free at the best quality.

these boxes all have compromises you need to make with them if you own a pc or a laptop your better off hooking them up to your tv or just buying a media pc.

Both the amazon Fire TV & the amazon Fire Stick say they support Netflix on amazon own website....;)

i don't know what i must have been looking at when i thought it didn't do netflix as i was looking at buying one for somebody else. i must have missed the logo.

of the two then i would go for the fire tv, it's got a lot more features and much better spec it will be quicker, etc.

a media pc is the best solution though as it will always be future proof. amazon may stop support when they launch a newer version. pretty much why i don't bother with any of these things as i have a pc connected to the tv which will do anything you want it to.

you could use a laptop or a tablet you currently own, modern ones have hdmi out or you can use an adapter.

I do have a HTPC connected to my main TV (But I rarely use it)

But I like the idea of these fire TV/sticks as I would be able to use them and move them between the 5 TV's in the house easily.
Plus am hoping they can be controlled by my Logitech Harmony Ultimate Remote Control..

i'm sure they can be controlled using a smartphone.

most things these days is moving that way and in about 10 years time you won't need a single remote to control all your tech just a smartphone.

i can control my tv, soundbar and ps4 through my phone as it is. i think even the virgin tivo box can be controlled by my phone too.

is that a fire and a heater beside your stand? as well a a kuro.

I've got Unified Remote on my phone which can control virtually everything including my VU+ satellite receiver but WHAT'S THE POINT?
I do a lot with my phone but changing a channel or going forward 4 minutes is not one of them.

It's not that it's the fact that you even need them.

My pz85b was like having a bbq in the room the kuro must be outputting enough heat for your room with all the other tech.

Where do you live Iceland?

Even my modern plasma runs quite hot

looks like he lives in guernsey, thought it was warm there? :)

and yeh I have a pdp lx 5090 and they do kick out a lot of heat, still loving the picture though

on another note I'm pretty sure your your harmony will control the firetv stick, my harmony controls my firetv just fine

Random thought I just had, why did they bother making the top of the remote look transparent like an IR remote, even going as far as putting the plastic protection film on it when its new, when its not an IR remote? Its Bluetooth, so they could have just made it all the matt feel plastic of the rest of the remote.

I wonder if they originally designed it to be an IR remote?

The Harmony Smart Control works great with the Fire TV. Seems to control everything really well, including Kodi. Yes, it is possible to control with your phone.. but its such a PITA swiping to unlock phone, going to app, going to menus, tapping on a glass screen. Much easier to just use the physical buttons on the smart remote (which is amazing btw).
