Windows 10

Thinking of factory restoring my laptop ready for W10, ive made a start on saving documents and photos etc to the cloud. However how do i backup apps and appdata?

Build 10130.

Just added a couple of users and suddenly I can no longer use PIN to sign in, defaults to password, again, had this in builds 10074 and 10122...

Also putting the task bar at the top stills gives problems with losing the search box, replaces with just the icon.

Anybody having this?

I have always been wary of 'upgrading' an OS and much prefer a fresh install.

I just read above that upgrading Win 7 etc upgrades your licence key to be usable as Win 10 as well...So if I upgraded first, but then wanted to do a fresh install, would I still need to buy a copy of Win 10?

Oh, and is it worth it as an upgrade from Win 7? I have a gaming pc and a works pc (most important program to run is an accounts program called Quickbooks)

once you have used your W7 key or W 8.1 key to upgrade to W 10 you can either do a fresh install or use the W 10 OS to do a format like you can in 8.1.

As for whether it is worth the upgrade, that is kind of up to you.

If your PC is fairly new and supports some of the newer features like UEFI BIOS, which Windows 7 doesn't properly, you may be able to set it up and boot up a lot quicker than 7.
Also it will depend if you want support for things like DirectX12.

In the grand scheme of things, it is unlikely to give you anything like buying a new graphics card to replace a 5 year old one, but there will be certain features which will only be supported through Windows 10.

Plus, if you do decide to upgrade you PC in future, having processed the Windows upgrade before the year will then mean any new features of the PC will be utilised once you upgrade.

I've been tryign to read up on Win10 as much as i can but there's a lot of info to get through.

Does it still use Windows 8's terrible terrible interface? I cant handle the whole setup, really. Im still on Windows 7 because I like the classic start bar and draggable windows set up. My GF's win8 laptop drives me insane when i try to do.. well anything.

I guess what im after is a better Windows 7, in much the same way that Win7 was a better Vista. Essentially everythign the same, but better.

I like windows 10 but this is because I can install classic shell and get back the old window s7 start menu as I don't like the charms or the current start menu they have.

they have done changes to the start menu in windows 10, screen shot of it from google

But it still acts as a start menu? Clicking it doesnt take me to some full screen mobile interface like 8? Cause that's a huge difference.

Im sure it will offer customization at some point making it look "classic", so that's not so much an issue as long as it works roughly the same!

It works just as the classic Start Menu from days gone by worked. It has the extra bit of space on the right for the Metro-style tiles, but they're massively scaled down and clicking Start or pressing the Start button on the keyboard brings up the old-style menu in the bottom left, not an awful fullscreen tile interface.

also if u don't like the titles you can remove them from the start menu.

personally i don't know why anyone would install the classic shell to make it look like w7. once you've removed the titles then it's basically a normal start menu

I still cannot get over how some are still so intrenched with an old style work flow from last century.
