Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

I had a 'B' service on the CLS and used BMERC in Barnet. Also used them for servicing on my E46. They do a free collect/drop off etc if you are reasonably local.

I've also used Prestige Performance in the past when I had the E46.

Both are decent.

Thanks. How much more cheaper were Prestige Performance in comparison to Mercedes? PP don't want to give me a quote over email or phone, I've given them the breakdown of work Mercedes would be doing.

Wayne Gates seemed good when I used them for my SLK brakes earlier in the year. Access to their yard can be pretty tight though, especially if you're used to the open expanses of main dealers!!

Seems like the best option at the moment, it's about 15 miles away from me, nothing nearer that anyone is recommending. I hope it's not too tight, like you mentioned I was hoping they'd do the work in open space rather than crammed with other cars lol

From what I remember, it was a reasonable amount cheaper that the dealer (BMW) but that was only as far as servicing is concerned at the hourly rate.

I remember them being a bit funny about using non-genuine parts for repairs though - when my alternator died, they would only supply and fit a genuine BMW part at £500++ whereas other garages quoted on equivalent/refurb as I'd have expected on an alternator and it ended up costing me a lot, lot less because I went elsewhere.

Strange they won't quote over the phone for a service though.

The workspace is fine, they just tend to have a lot of cars parked outside in their yard! It wasn't quite what I was expecting being used to main dealers but the staff were helpful and they did a good job at a fair price.

Had a sit in the new Maybach Mercedes S600 and it's very nice, if a bit big.

One thing I noticed though is that the screen surround at the front is horribly cheap plastic! Seems terribly out of place in a near-£200k car!

The new SL has nasty plastic door handles too. Even my Audi has metal door handles and it didn't cost the best of of £100k new...

The build quality seems much better on Audis. When I look underneath my SLK55 lots of the exposed screws are showing signs of rust/corrosion. On my others halfs TT all of the screws/bolts under the arches are as good as new. The TT in general seems to be built with better materials. Crazy when I think of the price difference.

What price difference - an SLK and a comparable TT were about the same price?

You are always going to find the 'my expensive car is built like a cheap car' paradox when you buy a very top end model of a low end car.

Top end SLK is double the price of mid-range TT. Sorry, should have included more detail about the TT model. The point still stands though, the build quality of the SLK should still at least comparable to the TT. For that matter, the SL 'flagship' build quality is exactly the same as the SLK whereas in theory it should be better.

Coming from the other side, I am very pleased with my CLS's build quality - really very good, with metal all over the place (i.e. not plastic) on door handles, paddles, switchgear (mostly) and so on. Everything seems particularly well screwed together, and so forth. Certainly is a step up, IMHO, from my previous car - XF - although that was not 'bad'.

The SL quality level is massively better than the SLK.

The missus is test driving an A class 220cdi AMG Sport on Saturday. Anything to keep an eye out for or test? I'm aware of the bone shaking ride on these but is there anything else to be aware of.

What are the best options to go for?

I understand you cant spec xenons separately and you have to get the night pack correct?

She is looking into a lease with around 240-250pm.

Noticed this today after work. Any idea how much it might cost if I go directly to MB?

There's only one dent, near the rim, in the 2nd pic that's just a reflection in the middle.

I'm not sure of the exact cost but don't go to MB, find a local PDR guy who should charge around £30 to get rid of the dent. Then depending how bad the scratch is either polish out or get a touch up kit for it. It doesn't look anywhere near bad enough to be considering more than that IMO.

I'm going to get a quote from them anyway, just to get an idea.

Anyone know any places around London I can bring it to, don't want to go to any place as its quite a delicate job. Thanks.

So, I did the spark plugs (all 16 of them!) last weekend. They didn't look too bad at all really for 70k miles. Changed them outside the service schedule (I think its 100k) and put in some OEM equivalent NGK ILFR6A. Runs a little smoother (possibly placebo!) but it reports a slight increase in mpg for a journey I am used to doing so I call it a win.

Unfortunately, I did notice the inevitable valve cover and breather cover oil leaks starting on both banks of cylinders (common issue on the M113 and M112 engines). Starting to make its way down into the spark plug recesses and makes everything around the ignition coil packs really untidy :( So I cleaned it all up temporarily and ordered the full set of replacement gaskets, breather hoses and sealant- which is next weekend's task!

I also, swapped out the recently changed Pagid front pads for genuine Mercedes ones - the Pagid ones squealed horribly at low speeds and low braking levels - it was just not acceptable. Seems to be a common thing with these (unsure whether it's something specific with these calipers and pads but the OEM ones are happily squeal free!)

How long did it take you? I have the same job to do on my C55 when I get home. I'm sure its the same plug.

Took me about 4.5-5 hours in total (but I did spend a fair bit of that cleaning up the oil spray that had gathered in the recesses on the valve covers and nearby bits!)

I think the book time is 3-4 hours - the most awkward plug was the driver side rear (cyl 4 iirc) as space gets a bit tight.

If its the M113K engine on your C55, it'll be the same plug. 3588 is the type code for the NGK ones I used :)

edit: In case you find it useful, I documented the entire thing here
