Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

Took me about 4.5-5 hours in total (but I did spend a fair bit of that cleaning up the oil spray that had gathered in the recesses on the valve covers and nearby bits!)

I think the book time is 3-4 hours - the most awkward plug was the driver side rear (cyl 4 iirc) as space gets a bit tight.

If its the M113K engine on your C55, it'll be the same plug. 3588 is the type code for the NGK ones I used :)

edit: In case you find it useful, I documented the entire thing here

Just checked, mine are IFR6D 10 plugs. M113 engine.

Interesting. Seems like they're both compatible but application changed at some point. Not sure what other differences there are between the 2 types.

Out of interest, what year is your C55?

As I'd hoped, I got round to replacing the valve cover gaskets and re-sealed the breather expansion tanks this weekend :) took the opportunity to clean everything up, paint a few bits and freshen up the engine bay. Few pics of some 55K goodness if anyone is interested!

Freshened up the supercharger with the same silver as the valve covers and did the surge tanks black with polished lettering. Cant see much of the valve covers when the engine covers and intakes are on though! Possible excuse to get a new intake :p

What engine? Doubt that car will remain intact for long...although I guess you can get away with more in it.

I'm not up to scratch with mercs so I couldn't tell you what engine it is. It's white with black tat stuck on it.

Guess he can pay for the bills as well then :p

Yeah, he is proper loaded. He is 80+ and just retired and passed on his businesses to his kids. Still at 80ish he is up around 5am and goes into his workshed and builds windmills, furniture and rebuilds machinery all day every day to keep him self busy.

You can do it for way less than £2200 :P

You can, but not with genuine parts and I can't do it myself. With discount it will come to about £2000 I think (I have the performance pack, so the front discs on their own take up the first £1000! Still cheaper than a mercedes dealership though.). That includes discs, pads, sensors etc. Think I will get my headlights restored while it is in and probably some of the chips on the bonnet too (fixed, not restored :p).

If you go genuine you are a fool :P

Tarox do replacement front rotors/discs for £700
Buzzer disks were £350 and only needed the pads I used to be chamfered a bit with some anti squeal brake paste and so far been fine. You lose the 2 piece floating but that has never bothered me.
I got rear discs and pads OEM for £360.

Is the PP setup on the 55 more similar to the 63 setup then? What else is different?

I don't have it; my brake parts were significantly cheaper than that!

Prefacelift on the R171 SLK55 is a 2 piece floating disc on the front. Which is rediculously expensive from Merc (still). But there are some ways around it, which make it considerably cheaper.

It became an optional extra on cars after 06 (except mines a prefacelift on an 07 plate....minor exception to the rule) So after 06 it generally wasn't specced by anyone.

6 pot front/4 pot rears for the big brakes the smaller are 4 pot and 2 pot IIRC.

Yup, this. No one took the option after it became optional. They are supreme brakes though, but the fully floating is a little OTT for anything other than the track. At least it has made my mind up over whether I will keep this car or not - will keep it a few more years and then see what the facelift 55 is like and will probably take a look at the current R8 offerings also.

Ah I see. The 63 also has the floating disk setup. Not sure whether the PP was a thing on all 55k engined cars but seems like the brake setup is obviously different regardless! The CLS/E 55K has 8 pot fronts and 4 pot rears - I'd have guessed they would have been a common part.
