Smokers

And I assume you don't drive a car, use anything manufactured through pollutant processes, avoid electricity like the plague and especially avoid wearing that god-awful choking perfume that department shops spread all over their counters by the front door...?

News for you - EVERYONE at some point does something that adversely impacts others' days and others' health, mostly through conscious decision, as well.
You complain about my smoking - I'm sure that microwave meal you're stuffing up the office with is reaching far more people...

But hey, if my smoking bothers you that much, I can always just crack open a sewer for you and let you enjoy the rich aroma of hydrogen sulphide instead...? :p

When a cigarette can transport me to other cities, power my appliances and keep me warm... then I would smoke as well.

Unfortunately for the lone cigarette all it does is kill.

In a 2006 European study, the risk of developing lung cancer was:
0.2% for men who never smoked (0.4% for women)
5.5% for male former smokers (2.6% in women)
15.9% for current male smokers (9.5% for women)
24.4% for male “heavy smokers” defined as smoking more than 5 cigarettes per day (18.5% for women)

Anyone who smokes habitually with this sort of information at their fingertips, needs to get themselves sorted out.

I'm not sure about the weak willed part though, a chemical addiction like nicotine must be an absolute nightmare to try and crack, I do sympathise in many ways - how people can be trapped into using a highly damaging, dangerous and insanely expensive product, that you can't stop using.. I can't imagine how awful it must be to want to quit, and not be able to.

Tough. When your stupid addiction impacts my day, and even my health, then I'll judge you all I want thanksverymuch.

On another note, if I do have to overtake a filthy smoker whilst walking I always do my best to squeeze out a good-one in my wake for them to walk through. Not that they'd smell it of course.

Here we have the 2 varieties of non-smoker, first is the normal, common or garden "regular joe" who whilst expressing his opinions and distaste on the internet does so with restraint and sympathy.

Secondly we have the lesser spotted variety, who seeks to re-educate and punish those he doesn't know for doing something he personally doesnt approve of, a species that is sadly flourishing in more recent days.

In other news, thats me off nicotine completely now over a week, apart from terrible road rage i've been managing ok.

As for processed sugar, I don't drink any sugary drinks (never liked fizzy), don't have sugar in my tea/coffee, don't eat ready meals, rarely eat sweets and chocolate... but good try. I'm sure it's present but at the end of the day (and before you jump on the tea/coffee thing) those 'addictions' don't impact everyone else. Whereas smoking demonstrably does. Even if it is just the stench.

While I agree that smoking is more than just an annoyance to some people, non of us seemingly bat an eyelid at inhaling a hellish amount more toxic fumes that's pumped into our lungs from vehicles on a daily basis. But because society views this as a necessary evil, we just keep schtum and sweep it under the carpet.

And no, we likely wouldn't smell your farts. Not because we've somehow magically lost our sense of smell but because they'd likely be overpowered by the constant whiff from all the catalytic converters out there.

I started when I ran out of baccy of the wacky kind and decided to smoke one without it. Big mistake, and one I'll always regret, though I've switched to vaping now and haven't looked back. I did wean myself off, down to 0% nicotine vape liquid, but stress during exams, a broken e-cig, and needing that 10 minute break to switch off, roll and smoke a fag brought me back. Since back on the vape and going through the process again, and it's landed me a summer job between uni courses, so I can't really complain.

I urge anyone smoking to switch to vaping - not that it's harmless, breathing anything that isn't air is obviouly going to cause some damage to your lungs, but it is undoubtedly better for you, not to mention cheaper, smells better, tastes nicer, and is easier to wean yourself off the nicotine addiction.

Haha Scam falls nicely into the category for preachy non/reformed smoker.
25% truth 75% internet bravado.
Wouldn't actually say boo to a goose so will "passively" suffer.

True - Why pump crap into the lungs of just the few people who insist on barging past, when you can spread it all the way to other cities! :p

A ciggie can power appliances, though... There was a 1st year science demo that showed how much power could be drawn from various burning things. A ciggie generates something like five times the power of a peanut, IIRC.

Great way to get 11 year olds hooked, by the way - Have your science teacher spark one up in class!!

Smoked on and off from about 15 until around 25. Was never heavy so quitting wasn't hard and I couldn't stomach one now.

That said i'd rather die 10 years younger smoking than be seeing vaping, it's a tragic look and the word vaping is just cringeworthy. :D

Obese people are far worse than smokers in my opinion and imagine a far few people posting in these thread are considerably overweight. I'd hazard a guess at some of the more judgemental posters in here being gravitationally challenged.

I'm an obese, alcoholic that chain smokes. :p

I've never understood smoking.

Tried it once, it just felt like someone was stabbing my throat from the inside out, so never bothered.

I used to drink every week when smoking was in the Pubs and never took it up, all of my mates smoke and I never started it...Just seemed odd. And expensive :p

Couldn't agree more. Went back to London this summer and was amazed how vaping has taken off but, and its a big but, Essex boys vaping look so ridiculous i think i would rather just quit entirely.

Is that the point of them? They look so big and stupid, like sucking on a lightsabre hilt, that you quit through shame.:p

How do you know I don't complain, exactly? I'm forever waving away people's smoke as I walk past them, if they wonder what I'm doing I'll tell them. I'm not going to stop people in the street and challenge them because (a) that would be stupid and (b) it would take me hours to get anywhere.

To all those other arguments about cars, electricity etc, StriderX put it most succinctly:
When a cigarette can transport me to other cities, power my appliances and keep me warm... then I would smoke as well.

And besides the fact that I don't own a car, don't eat ready-meals, but yeah you're right I do use electricity/gas etc so I'll give you that. If they pro-smoking brigade can come up with one non-selfish reason why it's a good habit, or how it positively impacts others then I'll be very impressed. Comparing smoking to cars is just stupid.

As for the farting, since when did arguing on the internet mean we all have to leave our sense of humour at home? C'mon guys.. (although if I was brewing one after walking past a smoker it would definitely satisfy me to leave it there for him/her ;))

Smoking related illnesses costs the NHS around the £2 billion a year mark and yet we provide five to ten times that amount back in tax revenue as a consequence to the country.

Impressed?
