Just because new shiny hits doesn't mean we all have to upgrade

WTF,the Core i5 6600K is over £200??

Plus the Core i7 5820K is now cheaper than a Core i7 6700K??

With DX12 and Vulkan being released,I can see the Core i7 6700K being a very poor longterm purchase.

My thought is, next year Intel is gonna do with AMD what Nvidia did this year (when they released 980ti just before Fury). They will release Kaby Lake with much improved performance, that Zen is not gonna match:D Intel knows what to do, they are just holding back...waiting...

People who buy this year z170 platform will probably? be able to swap only processor. One year is not gonna change anything regarding more cores so next year all x99 motherboards+processors will be on MM for sale:p as performance of the new processor will be much better.

Just to point out any one buying Skylake, try and get RAM at least at 3000Mhz. Skylake seems to perform better with faster ram.

You got a link m8? cheers

That is what I am really betting on, hopefully z170 will not do what P55 did and last only one generation of CPUs.

my 6600k overclocks just as well as my 2500k, i can't help but image intel will throw a 6600K 'GO' stepping, that will be a cool nostalgic throwback.

Sounds very unlikely given Intel have made next to no progress in several gens and Kaby is a last-minute addition to be able to have anything at all to release given the Cannonlake delays. x99 is the stronger option right now, there is no reason to go 6700k. 6600k has a place at least :)

It was one of the reviews I read over the last few days. I'll see if I can find it.

It basically showed that there was a performance increase between using 2400Mhz and 3000Mhz+ with the 6700k.

Then again if you look around the web and read all the different reviews, they are all quite contradictory. :o

It sounds like you didn't make a sensible choice going for x99 in the first place. It's only really necessary for people with specific needs, so you're not going to see the performance you want relative to what you've spent if you're not meeting that criteria.

It's a performance platform for high end demanding users. Like workstation use that gets used heavily. The same goes for X79 too, but you can get some good deals on X79 bundles which mitigates the cost component. Plus for the most part X99 isn't a worthwhile upgrade for X79 users unless you're looking for something really specific to the X99 platform, like m.2 or all the native Intel SATA3 ports.

Oh also, why are you putting spaces in front of full stops and question marks?

Can't believe the shills are starting to brainwash people.

Skylake is no good. It's even slower than its predecessor in some things. There's no IPC uplift. Stop trying to salvage it.

Stay strong!! Don't waste money. And certainly don't reward Intel for putting out a bland chip.

I had a 6 core Xeon then grabbed a 5930k bundle cheap in mm

It was brilliant in video editing but not 650 quid s worth of brilliant .

I just think the 6700k is x99 money and it's not even 6 core so why bother ?

I know ... :D

I'm struggling to see why people would buy a 6700K over a 5820K for not a lot more money.

6C/12T vs 4C/8T speaks for itself.

Lol, brainwash? Surely there are more people trying to brainwash skylake is no good.

It tends to be people with 4970K extra vocal on forums and quick to post one line replies like 'skyfail'. And from an 4970k owners prospective, I totally agree Skylake is lacklustre.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to try defend anything. Surely easyrider did not make this thread to attract all the con-skylake people in here to have a hate party, therefore have everyone agree with him to boost his internet ego. I'm just trying to make an interesting conversation.

In most part I agree with OP that 4970k owners should not upgrade. But it has been the case since since sandy. This forum absolutely slaughtered DC. Did not stop people like easyrider buying it.

Skylake i7 would make more sense if it was priced at DC levels, time will tell if it is early adopters tax or not.

-why spend more for cores that don't give any benefit in gaming, skylake clocks higher so performance is similar in the end(as per 8pack tests)
-next year possible refresh, might give better performance with competition in the horizon, might not, might require new socket, might not, there is a chance
-next year for x99-nothing for sure
-so why spend more, for something 100% without options in the future?
-when games for dx12 are gonna be available people will replace their x99 anyway, so basically waisted money right now for future in which they will be long gone
