Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

And some here were criticizing Nvidia's 'paper launch', having reviews out before the cards were available.

Just cant win.

That might have something to do with the supply and demand. Nvidia was not ready to go to market with these cards yet quite evidently as they can't supply their board partners with enough GPUs to keep up with demand. But jumped the gun letting reviewers let loose and went to market early.

AMD want to try and lap up the segment which will potentially make them the most money so it makes sense for them to keep things very hush hush and release reviews on the day of release. Prevents nvidia coming in with their competitor (1060 anytime soon)

Actually,Fottemberg who runs a well know Italian rumour and tech site, says they got a RX480 review sample but said the following three days ago:

AMD still didn't send us the RX480 new specific driver.

No, eheh. They just don't want that some leakers show benchmark results before NDA deadline. We will have just 2 days to do our benchmarks.

So apparently,if the review was made with drivers from last week it is not using the ones for the RX480.

RX480 could be the biggest fail ever, but meh in another day we will soon see how it performs!

It doesn't, though. Several times people have made this argument and at no point has it made any sense.

Only giving publications two days to do a full suite of benchmarks is pretty awful. Not sure people realize how tedious and time consuming all that is(especially since you want to double check many results). And then they need a full scale write-up of everything. Geez.

Do AMD always wait till day of release to lift the review embargo? Seems like they're hiding something, good or bad.

Looking at other media like video games, if the NDA doesn't lift until the product has already shipped it's usually because it's a turkey and they want to get early sales based on the hype. Not saying that's what's happening here, but it definately seems a bit shady.

AFAIK,its not the first graphics card launch to do so either - if true I get the impression both companies are rather paranoid of each other!

Cursing this thread, can't get Public Enemy's Don't Believe The Hype out of my head. At least it's good for my wallet :p

How can you trust a graph that has the 960 within 9 frames and the 780 ahead of the 980

That's clearly messed up.

So is AMD now DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED............AGAIN??!! :p

So slower than an OC GTX 970, and we know those OC like beasts. This isn't going to be pretty for AMD. No wonder Raja is trying to divert people's attention to Vega.

That looks good enough for me!

considering that I have 2x 4770 (in a drawer...)
and I am currently using the integrated HD 530...

I was considering something in the GTX 960 /R9 380 range, thus I'll will get one when it's available around here :)

Not sure why people are assuming reviews not being available until the same day cards are available to buy is instantly a bad thing.

In the past a lot of graphics card releases were done like this. It can be a mix of wanting to ensure actual stock is available (therefore not attracting the "paper launch" criticism), but also to avoid showing your hand performance wise, and risking reactionary price cuts from your competitor, before your product is even available to buy.

NVIDIA didn't need to wait for stock with the 1070/1080 launches, as AMD had no response (nothing available to launch, nothing to factory overclock e.g. Ghz editions, and nothing that would be any more attractive with a price cut).

If AMD had put out actual performance figures as soon as the 480 was announced, NVIDIA would have had plenty of time to counter, with either a rushed mid range launch (assuming 1060 is well into production), or aggressive price cuts on all remaining 970/980 stock.

Some pepole are not going to like this but....

GTX 970 @ Stock: 48 FPS

@ 1550/1950: 59 FPS.. a 23% increase in FPS, or +11 FPS in this case.
