No Man's Sky - Procedural space game

Sadly the practice of 'bait and switch' is rampant in the industry at the moment, I've come to expect it form big publishers (namely Ubisoft) but for a small independent team to do the same is gulling to say the least.

The only way to avoid this crap is stop pre ordering games and wait for the reviews but people seem to like getting screwed over time after time. :o

He just comes across as an arrogant ****. It's hardly surprising it's turned out this way.

Also, some "reviews" on Metacritic...

Those reviews aren't surprising. As I said earlier, this weird mantra-like phrase that fans keep repeating that the game is exactly what they expected is very strange(it would be strange anyway, but when you consider all of the broken promises, it seem even stranger). Seeing some people keep saying it is like watching a friend of yours slowly being brainwashed by a cult:p It will now turn on to 'paid dlc. That is exactly what I expected. It is your own fault for expecting anything else!'

It could have helped the backlash to employ an actual media representative to deal with information/comments released to the press :p.

I think it was out of good intention; I think HelloGames image of the final product and what it ended up being were done with the best intentions. Hopefully they can 'fix' the content left out moving forwards.

The thing Sean Murray has going for him is his track record, he has not done this before, whereas Ubisoft/EA and Peter M have done this consistently. You hope HelloGames does not want to go down that path.

Got to the point now, where I've redone my ship, multi-tool and exo-suit, have no real need to grind anything else, just float from system to system as and when the mood takes me, no story really, no rush, no urgency.

Just gotta mine enough to keep the engines running, not really that tough.

Have you watched the TotalBiscuit video about No Man Sky?

It's a 40 minute video which basically says the same thing. I.e. what the developer gained in hype, he lost in unmet expectations and miscommunication.

I don't own the game but reading through this thread and watching that video, I'm surprised Sean Murray hasn't been lynched.

Performance seems to have dropped off the edge of a cliff again wtf. Everything was perfect!!!

66MB patch just out on the experimental branch if you are on that - seems to have increased the detail being generated in textures (though mostly seems to be extra pixel noise to try and break up the bigger texels) which might have some performance impact though there isn't a changelog that I can see yet to be sure.

I'm running experimental, ever since the small 6.7mb patch, my performance seems to be poor, dont know if its just the game being funny, the particular planet i'm on or whether they changed something.
gonna try going back to normal version and see if there is any difference.

Edit
Oh seems like new patch just released will try that first.

5030 words done so far today ;).

Nice one :) how much longer you got on it?

Firstly, context is always important because it allows the understanding of the placement of what has happened in the wider context. That context is: HelloGames have not delivered what they promised, they are however not the first (nor will they be the last) developer to do this, and considering other examples of this happening they are far from the worst example.

I understand people are upset at their perceived 'wasted' money, but it is nobody but their fault for pre-ordering or purchasing without fully understanding what they were buying, that is in part due to HelloGames but also in part to not reading reviews, YouTube videos et cetera.

Out of the games I've bought over the last few years I'd say they have been the worst. But I normally wait for games to come down in price on Kinguin before I buy them. NMS was the 1st pre-order I've done for yonks and it was done off the back of the "game play" footage & dev chats I'd seen.

If what was shown at various expos, interviews, dev chats etc was released then you'd be right, however it was it was nothing like. That isn't the players fault, that is Hello Games fault.

There are many people happy with the product they received, despite content and final product not being quite what was expected.

Good, I hope they get a lot out of it :)

Also; I feel that a lot of the hype surrounding the game is as much the fault of audience's imagination running wild, and the video games media creating a hype train around this of phenomenal status..

To an extent, but Hello Games have been ambiguous about NMS & in some cases lied.

I'm done with this discussion though, for reals this time, although you'll want to have the last word I'm sure, for your own process of idyllic imagination :)..

Aww & we were getting along so well.:(

I'm not as critical of the final product: I admire the idea, I admire what they have achieved, even despite lacking some features I would have liked. However, in the grand scheme of things; No Man's Sky is really not that bad..

I admire the idea as well, the idea is basically what I've wanted to play since I was a little lad seeing Elite on the speccy 48k. That's not to say I put that on NMS, I didn't, I decided to pre-order on what I'd seen & heard from the devs.

Again, good for you, hope you really enjoy it.

Ps, you're the only one who seems to be taking this personally :), discussion and rhetoric aren't personal, not over something this trivial.

Looks like neither of us are then, gimme a cuddle.:)

Murray is no doubt hunkered down for now, but I will be VERY interested to see his response when he is publicly tackled over these issues and the glaring omissions from what he had originally stated the game would include. It makes no sense to me why certain features were SHOWN, not just talked about but actually shown working in demos yet are now totally absent from the game.

I think a lot of it is just a case of overexcited software engineers thinking up all sorts of glorious concepts, thinking they can achieve them, and telling everyone how great it'll be. Then reality sets in, with its budget and time constraints, and all those half-finished features have to be cut.

Stuff being shown in demos would have been prototype features that they presumably thought they could get finished and stable within time and budget. And again, reality had other ideas.

That's the generous interpretation. The less generous interpretation is they deliberately lied to everyone, knowing full well they'd be despised for it. Hanlon's razor says it's the first one.

Same here mate. I can't believe it's been three years since being announced.

I'm still enjoying the game. Just gone from a very hostile planet where I literally couldn't do a thing - to a nice watery planet with 13 creatures to find with plenty of resources and nice climate. Oh and the view is awesome! :)

I'd say a combination of the two personally.

Post as screeny please, when it wants to, nms can be a good looking game.

I'm surprised it took so long to get a "Hitler reacts..." video out.

Still enjoying the game, I must admit I'm still on my first planet after 1 week...

I've upgraded my suit with 14 more slots and I'm making over a million units every visit to the trade station by mining emeril. There's loads of it on the planet and I may as well get it while exploring.

Have only encountered one crashed ship, it was smaller than my starter, and no new mining tool! I've now met 10 aliens and none of their structures have had a new mining tool for sale! It's now my no.1 goal.

I do wish for a map or some way to navigate to places I've been. A few days ago I found a really good multi platform trading station but for the life of me I can't find it again!

I will say that this is the first game in 10 years of marriage (and 13 years of courtship) that my wife has shown any remote interest in and actually asks questions about while I play. Usually it's just "are you still on that game" and "why are you killing that [insert alien, person, animal] or " I don't even know what I'm looking at...go and empty the garbage"

Cheers
