Advice needed: Gift for friends I'm going to see in a week's time. They like their whisky, I know they like Laphroaig so peaty but smooth is OK. Only other I remember them liking is Nikka from the Barrel. Something a bit different but around £50? Or up to £100.

Does anyone have a whisky tasting set they would recommend. Thinking to get one for my week off. Going to look at the Drinks by the Dram sets on Amazon.

Based on a few posts above I'm thinking to get a bottle of BenRiach either the 10 or 15.

I have never been left feeling ripped off after buying a benriach, from the lowly 10 up to the 21 year old and all the different cask finishes in between,,, they have all been great

the main problem is availability south of the border, its either mail order or a specialist shop

master of malt and the green welly stop both have very reasonable delivery rates

a fiver for 1-5 bottles is pretty good as they both package them very securely and have used both frequently (we tend to order 4 at a go as a few of us from work bulk order to save a few quid)

Another recommendation. That's good to know. I ended up ordering the Benriach 15 from Amazon. I also got myself the Drinks by the Dram Highland tasting set.

Should set me up for a few evenings in a cottage in the Peaks for a week.

Looking for a new bottle to keep me going. I'm nursing my lovely bottle of Auchentoshan 21 which is heavenly (was a gift!). That and my Balvenie Doublewood have been my favourites so far. There's a couple of whiskey shops close to my work but I thought I'd do a bit of browsing online first. Any thoughts on these?

Hmn, on second look that looks a bit light. The last bottle I bought was an Aultmore and I really wasn't taken with that. I'm now craving something rich (but not too sweet), I just don't like the smoke.

Aberlour 12 is a great bottle, the non-chill filtered version if you can get it.

Or maybe Glenfiddich 15.

That sounds lush, I think I'm sold. £37 at the local shop. Then again the 16yo sounds great too. Hmn.

I'm going up to the girlfriend's parent's house this weekend, I might take her Dad up a bottle of the 12yo. That way I get a taste first

Well I got the girlfriend's Dad a bottle of the Glendronach 12. It's very nice but probably too sweet for me. Nice and big bodied though.

So I think I'm back on the hunt. Any recommendations for around £40? I previously went way too light with an Aultmore, and too fruity with a Tamdhu. I want something a bit heavier, but more creamy/vanilla/caramel flavours without going too sweet/sherried necessarily.

For that price and those tasting requirements give Knockando 12 a try, it should fit the bill. One thing I'd say about it is that I find the bottle improves over time, so don't make a snap judgement on it, give it time. That's not to imply it is bad to start with, just that I find it gets better.

Got a 7yr old Glendalough (Irish single malt) for Fridays tasting session at a mates.
Its a young whiskey night so has to be 4-9yrs old and rye and bourbon are not allowed.
Its a new(ish) distillery so not expecting much but we'll see.

It might not be quite what you mean but I'd recommend a whisky tasting experience at a shop - it's good fun and helps you get more from tasting because you've got someone to explain the subtleties which you probably won't have if you just get a few bottles. I've been to an evening that Cadenheads put on and enjoyed it but there are plenty of other shops that will do similar and might be easier to get to for you.
