Road Cycling

I'm intending to ride to my parents tomorrow
Didn't. Rain & generally miserable misty & grizzly weather so skipped it and did a ton of electrical/DIY stuffs. Managed a total of ~9 miles on Zwift to bring my weekly total to 65 miles (lol ).
One bonus - managed to sell my old Carrera (£110) and going to use the money (along with future sale of my KK Road Machine) to buy a Tacx Vortex Smart, when there's some kinda deal on them (anything below £350 basically). Sale on Wiggle! £315! Bought!

My replacement KK InRide pod arrived and can be blamed for much of my short Zwift ride and low weekly mileage... Who'd have thought for a total of close to 2 hours sorting things out & testing I'd only clock up 9 miles!:rolleyes:

The old InRide pod is totally junk - as proven with the replacement, as it's reporting power! Woohoo! Although the android app is very flaky (dropped out twice) and when reporting (uncalibrated) power was around 30-40W higher than the zpower on Zwift. I'm taking that with a very big pinch of salt as I'm considering both to be inaccurate.

InRide calibration... It DOES start on the kinetic app (after 10 minutes warmup, didn't get to that stage before with the duff InRide), it reads your speed and wants you to ride at 23.3mph after which you stop allowing the Trainer to spindown. I tried probably 10 different times to calibrate the thing and couldn't get it to. I'm unsure if the app actually starts spindown (no messages) but none of the combinations I could get it to do anything. Trying to ride at a 'steady' 21-25mph is almost impossible on something so sensitive, nevermind at 23.3mph.:eek::(

Very poor by the driver, whilst I'm not pro helmet

Why would you not make you child wear one
Agreed, very poor driving but equally not that surprising (doubtful the driver saw the child prior to overtake. Had a similar one here last weekend - driver in 4x4 with trailer overtook me and a handful of kids (I'd caught up with - they crossed at some lights so I'd stopped for the red) while going through a junction with oncoming traffic. Total joke! Got it all on camera too!
This was on a tubeless rim so the above may or may not help.:D
Tubeless rims can give an audible 'snap' as the tyre jumps into the groove (couple I've seen/heard anyway). If it's not tubeless then you probably have the tube snagged between the rim and tyre somewhere. Very easy to do without a bit of air in the tube when fitting. Very easy to wreck tubes doing this too (been there & got the tshirt). ;)
Double it and that's what a categorised Hill Climb feels like :p
Naaah not steep enough for hill climb - only the last section is over 10%! ;)

While on the subject of hillclimbs... Local U16 protege Josh Sandman finished 4th in the Juniors National Hillclimb (results not published yet). Not a bad result for a mostly circuit/crit racer! :o

Never used Zwift but it turns out you can use it with Strava Premium for a few months, how does it work? Did you just pick a course to ride? Does the data log with your actual miles/climbing etc?
Totally down to you (as the rider) on how you use Zwift.

Many just 'jump on and ride' - you can choose course type (flat/hilly etc and your avatar on screen is 'powered' up climbs by your calculated power or w/kg) where you can compete against other riders (if you wish), there are 'organised' rides where riders meet at a predetermined position along the same course riding at an approximate w/kg or power (when riding you can also 'join' on another rider), you get associated speed benefits from drafting along in a group/peloton. There are also usual training sessions which you can start (same as TrainerRoad/Sufferfest app/others) which work on certain aspects of your riding (like power, sprints, endurance and sweetspots) calculated/judged by your set FTP (which you can also do tests for & the app will update). These can also form plans which you can follow with set numbers of training sessions for hours per week for several weeks/months. There are also organised races.
Some good mileage and sounds like you had fun! Kudos! :D
Anyone know the screw dimensions for hangers? are they the same for all hangers?
Nope, all tend to be totally different... Even between different models within the same range (Giant Defy 2014 different to Defy 2015 for example). It's annoying!
Had a bit of a hectic weekend so wasn't really feeling 100% today. Still, haven't done much exercise recently so went for Galena on TR - 3 * 20 minutes of sweet spot intervals. Pretty painful, even with my currently lowered FTP setting.

Good stuff & good work looking at your data! Totally jealous of your smooth cadence, speed & power!

Your lowered FTP (230?) is still higher than mine :p
I had quite a good riding week last week, by my standards.

Lol! 'quite a good' = your highest this year by quite a margin! ;)

Doing some good mileage mate, keep it up! (or even back it off a touch and concentrate on maintaining it!). Pumpkin looks superb!

Edit: One of my friends rode from home (Hereford) right across Wales to Aberystwyth. I've wanted to do part of the ride before but not along the main roads, like he did. I'd take in the mountain roads and possibly even 'Devils Staircase'.

Has anyone tried those cageless bottles that attach to your frame via two studs that go in your cage screw holes?

They don't look all that secure but winter cleaning is made that bit easier on a frame without cages...

Found the squeak on my new bike. It wasn't the brakes, it was the rubber dust seal on the front hub. Right side spins with the wheel, the left side is static and causing the noise. It seems to have interference from the nut that sits inside it so I was a bit stumped as to what to do. So far I've just put a bit of lubrication in there so there is more friction with the hub itself rather than the nut so hopefully it'll turn with the wheel now.

Away for work so no riding until at least Thursday which is a bit of a bummer as the weather is so mild.

Sounds like fun, I'll have a crack tomorrow!

I nearly took a flyer on the cageless bottle but woosed out at the last minute and bought a £2 one :p

This segment is my next challenge, taking 2nd place hurt & tbh Im just not sure ive got it in me to find 14 seconds:

Cake, lots of cake could work. Couldnt it?

Yes I use them on my cross and tt bikes so I can dump a drink at the start after I warn up. They're very secure but not the easiest to just slide on in.

turns out I was right, M3 10mm worked. I tried to screw it in with the rear wheel still on. The hander wasn't aligned fully.

The thread is in the hanger, not the frame.

As the weather worsens and the evenings are dark my wife wants to be able to ride indoors to keep up her riding fitness. As I'd rather stand outside naked in the snow I've not kept up with what's a good trainer we can stick her roadbike on, then what's a good solution for entertainment while riding? I see mentions of Trainer Road and Zwift but haven't any experience with them.

Tempting although it is still £65 more than earlier this year! The problem is I have no room to setup a turbo... cold weather rides it is for me for the moment.

Cake would work on the downhill due to the increased mass, but the earlier climb would be slower unless you could carry more speed onto it somehow. Also be very careful, the segment goes right up to the damn roundabout at the bottom!:eek:

Result! M2x4mm on my Giant Defy (similar to a 'laptop screw' but countersunk smaller head). M3x6mm on the Giant Liv Avail 5 (other halfs), larger (M5?) on the old hybrid & M5x10mm on the Specialized Diverge

At least Specialized tend to use the same hangers across all of their range.

Depending on her budget... Tacx Flow Smart (~£200) from Halfords or Decathlon (only available in UK & EU) or the Tacx Vortex Smart (£315-350) from Wiggle/etc.

Lowered FTP is 281 :)
Beast!

Hush! & I know, but still better than £100 more...! ;)

Looking at the comparison tool for your times, you dont actually need to get any 'faster'. You just need to balance out where you put your effort in.
Comparison:
NfdRWQt.png
It might be difficult to interpret the graph if you've not used this before but it shows that you are significantly faster on the climbs but losing time on the flatter sections. You pulled back 15 seconds on the short climb between 1.4 and 1.6 miles! That's a massive difference in speed.
IMO, you are faster but he has paced it better and used his momentum better to keep a higher average speed.
Dont attack the hills, ride the whole segment at a consistent effort.
