What film did you watch last night?

Suicide Squad 4/10. If the film had been named differently with any old group of people put together for a mission, then I probably would have scored it higher as a reasonably enjoyable action flick. But it being The Squad, it felt very disappointing. In order to get people sympathizing with the leads I feel they were far too humanized instead of being the mean scary as hell group of misfits they should have been. I think the nastiest piece of work in the film was actually Amanda Waller, and given the film is about the 'worst criminals around' that just wasn't right. That said, Waller was good.

What We Do In The Shadows 8/10
I really enjoyed this film, a mocumentry on life as a Vampire flat sharing with other Vampires, it was the right amount of silly and an easy watch.

Dr Strange 7/10 its OK but can we have some big films that aren't super hero/comics please. Want to watch some other stuff at the cinema.

6 out of over 50 big films released this year where superhero/comic based.

3% is too damn high! :p

EDIT: Maths fail! 12%

Over the weekend I watched:

Ghostbusters (2016)

Not as bad as I was expecting. Decent special effects, few laughs (mainly from Kevin). Got a bit naff towards the end though.

6/10

Now You See Me 2

Wow. Just amazing!
Amazing as to much of a 180 they could do from the first (which I loved).
So contrived, shoe-horning Lizzy in to replace Isla (though she is worthy eye-candy for sure), and just the general feel was far from the first. Some nice set pieces, and Woody gave some chuckles, but it was just lacking, especially when they tried to recreate a twist like the first.

4/10, mainly for the visuals.

Jason Bourne

6/10

Big fan of first 3, with 2 being my favourite. Ultimatum felt a bit like a copy of that one and this new one feels like a re-hash of both 2+3. Kinda like the recent Star Wars in that respect.

It was ok. But dumb and rather lazy in places. Felt like Greengrass sort of settled on mediocrity this time around which is a shame. Couldn't get over the line in the Icelandic hacking room near the start... "Use SQL to corrupt their databases". Horrible.

In terms of the chase, fights, etc, it was just ok. Fights were over too quickly and the shaky cam thing just feels tired and rather annoying this time around. I wanted to actually see the fights.

Wasn't really brutal or tense enough. Shame really. But doubt we'll ever get another Supremacy now.

Jason Bourne - really enjoyed the first three films. This one was just garbage. Stopped watching it after the Athens scene. What the **** was going on here, was is scripted by idiots?

1/10

This one was written and directed by Paul Greengrass, who just directed Supremacy and Ultimatum. Prior to Jason Bourne, Tony Gilroy wrote all the Bourne films, and also directed Bourne Legacy.

Both Legacy and Jason Bourne are poor to average films, but were still made by the same two guys, except in a role reversal of sorts. This is what can happen when directors decide to write scripts, and writers decide to direct films.

when you rate films like ghostbusters worthy of watching at cinema , no wonder you get such a high number.
cinema at the moment is pretty dire, between comics and remakes, and silly sequals.
now i dont think going once a month is to far from average, so more than half of the biggest films being super hero is pretty damn high.

And that's why I've not been to the cinema in 10 months or so.

Last time I went was to see SW last Dec.

Yep. Although I am quite happy to sit through most comic book movies and don't mind sequels to films I like there is very little original about.

It seems Sci-Fi/Aliens are currently doing the rounds for the adult audience (and all the live action fairy tales for the kids + sequels) which I can only assume is because Interstellar and the Martian did very well (plus Star Wars). I do like Sci-Fi and Alien stuff as well and from what i've seen of the Arrival, Passengers and Ryan Reynolds new one they look like they will be good but you do see a trend.

Last night:

American Mary - 7/10

Probably only deserves 6/10 but the lead actress has been a favourite for many years :p
Quirky, darkly humorous, not too much gore but a lot of implied and it centres around 'body horror', definitely not a scary film and very disjointed with an odd out of knowhere ending. Worth a watch.

You need to find a cinema which shows lesser known film.

Richeh, there's a great cinema in Brighton called the Duke of York. It's worth a trip if there's something on there that isn't on elsewhere.

Not a millions miles away from you, and I occasionally make the journey from Crowborough way to make an evening out of it :)

A Street Cat Named Bob (2016) - 7/10

A heart-warming true story about a recovering drug addict who is helped in his recovery by the friends he makes thanks to a stray ginger cat.

Told in a matter of fact way with little embellishment, it’s a good story, if a little predictable and cliché in parts.

Not as humorous or hard-hitting as it could have been, as it focuses on their story rather than the problem of homeless people and/or drug addiction, but the lead actor (and the cat) are very good actors.

Arrival - 6/10

And before snitches snitch, this was a Cineworld Unlimited screening!

Promised much and delivered little in my opinion. There only real twist in the story didn't really amount to an awful lot in the end. There wasn't really any grand coming together of all of the story, a lot of unanswered questions and a big anti-climax.

Sadly, unimpressed. Plus, there was an old bloke sat in the row in front of us who absolutely stank, making the whole experience fairly miserable. Just old unwashed coat and cigarettes sort of smell. It was foul but there was nowhere to move to so endured it.
