What "man jobs" have you done today?

Filled a couple of big holes in the tarmac of the shared part of our driveway (I wish the tight neighbours would commit to all chipping in and block paving the lot to fit in with my drive!)..

I used something called 'Quickmac'. It went down with reasonably little fuss, albeit a lot of hammering with my big mallet. Fun times

If you compress down the insulation you're reducing the effectiveness, so yes it needs propped up.

I used the same stilts, for what looks around twice the size of loft! Safe to say it took a while... (pics in my build log thread..)

Also, no pre drilled holes, just impact driver some screws in will work (all the weight is downwards regardless, so unlikely to shift.)

The legs are made of plastic, however once the boards are on top and screwed down it really does feel a solid structure. I'm quite impressed with it tbh.

They don't have predrilled holes, however on each side of the "foot" they have runners, which help if you have thinner/thicker joists;

The bits which "hug" either side of the joist canbe broken off, this was useful when there was cable running along the joist.

All in all i spent about £140;

  • 2x Inspection Lamps (£15 each) £30
  • 2 packs of screws, ~£7
  • 6 packs of boards, £40
  • 4 Boxes Loft Stilts £60

I was left with 3 boards after doing the main boarding bit, however, I chopped a couple of these down to allow you to actually walk around the loft hatch.

I've still got a couple of loft stilts left over, you can buy them individually, but I wasn't sure how many I would need, I can always extend later on if we need more room!

Not too bad then, i'm planning on wiring up a few lights so will probably be around the £100 mark.

Based on the above comment though i may need an Impact Driver..... Always fancied buying one to see where the benefit lies compared to a regular drill driver.
 
No, no. If i need an Impact Driver then i'll have to buy one! :D

I do have a Bosch cordless screwdriver which is only 3.6v and pretty low powered, i've always thought i could do with something inbetween that and my 18v drill. I might look at a 10.8v Impact driver as that would be small/light enough for regular use aswell.
 
Those loft boards are quite soft so you should get away without an impact driver, though it's much quicker with one. Boarding out my loft was the first test of my impact driver and I was very impressed with it. Plus it was handy to have the drill spare to keep the countersink bit in it as I did countersink all the screw heads first. I would try and get an impact driver that takes the same batteries as your 18v drill if you are going to get one.

Also rookie tip/mistake on my part: When checking if a screw you have driven is flush with the board, let it cool first! I had a PZ2 shaped burn on my finger tip. Yes, I know, pretty special.......

Been busy the past couple of days;

Built some shelves to get stuff off the floor in garage, still needs properly organising but was taking up half the garage beforehand;

Got rid of evil dark wood on the staircase (zinseer FTW) sanded down all the stairs ready for hallway painting frenzy over the next month.

Hallway carpet and new blinds booked in.

Crazy that blinds are nearly as expensive as a carpet.
 
Just finished upgrading my insulation to 100mm in the centre section of my loft and boarding it. Plus installing a folding loft ladder.

What a fuss arse that was.

Tomorrow I aim to pick up another 3 rolls of 200mm and a 100mm roll of insulation, two lights, some 1.5mm twin and earth and a switch.

Hopefully get it all done before Friday. as I want to order some new dado rail and a length of door surround for the hatch.

One big job down and more added to my list...
 
I should have left the stairs alone....

Getting the old wallpaper off has been easy enough.....getting rid of the all the dust from the wallpaper that seems to have been up 20 years not so easy :(

When I moved in



14 months later, wallpaper off at least new windows in, just leaving the curtains at the top till the last minute before the wallpaper man pops along :) then new carpet for the stairs and cheapo laminate till I get the loungs ready as want to run through with some engineered wood or Vinyl tile.



Money, time, enthusiasm ohh motorbikes and holidays :)

Why people want to paint wood that horrible dark colour is beyond me tbh. Oh and painted the ceiling nasty job as well artex evil

Dug a trench from one end of the garden to another to accommodate a drain pipe, cold water feed and electricity. Not an easy task but enjoyed the manual labour.
 
Up in the attic again this time installing two pendant lamps. Had fun playing spot the non switching live...

Tomorrow I will be laying a couple of 100mm and 200mm rolls of insulation.

Day after probably lay the old carpet and underlay from down stairs. And measure up the beading for around thetrap door.
 
Following on from my previous post with my log store, my wifes asked me to build a herb planter box, but would like it to be at a decent height rather than on the floor.

At first i was just going to build it on stilts with maybe shelves underneath to make it look less weird but then i started thinking of building it ontop of the log store. The height is good, if i put plastic sheeting inside to stop water dripping down over my wood, would this be a decent idea or am i stupid to even contemplate it?
 
Replaced mine recently, was extremely easy as it was just a case of unscrew old and screw in new.

Just turn the water off first so you do not cause any air pockets.
