4k HDR TV selection - rather baffled!

My wife tends to use the TV speakers as she has no idea how to use the AMP. However I will use the amp for 99% of viewing and only not use it when I'm just checking something on the sky box

This is why I use the Logitech Harmony 'Activities'

One button push and my girlfriend (and me) can turn everything on, set it to the right inputs etc.

Have never used the Harmon Kardon speakers on my 65B6V

I had a harmony in the past and didn't really like it tbh.

I use the amp she uses the tv speakers and we are both happy with that arrangement tbh

Cheers both. I'm trying it with Richer Sounds as whilst they refused before on a different TV on the grounds of different warranty, there's one with included 5 year warranty and 10 year screen burn, vs RS's 6 year + 10 year screen burn. I'll report back.

Have gone for the Samsung KS7000 49-incher with Richer Sounds who have beaten this price here by a tenner:

Looking forward to this!

Chuffed for you mate. You're going to love it. Definitely the right decision in my opinion. If you've got an Xbox One S get a good UHD Bluray, or alternatively if you have Amazon Prime Video check out The Grand Tour. The built in apps are great and very responsive:

I use the AVForums "Day" settings from the KS7500 settings review, it can be found on YouTube. They go through the Day settings after the Night ones.

Picked up Goodfellas on 4K UHD Bluray tonight, that's my Thursday night film sorted ;). Not a great example of a 4K bluray but I didn't own it on bluray so had to be done.

Nice one, don't forget to post what you think of it on here.:)

I myself am still holding off for now.

Just noticed JL have bumped the price back up to £999, not sure why they keep doing that considering competitors still list it at around £849 and below.

Cheers - it'll have to be Amazon as I've yet to return to consoles since the original Xbox (damn I miss those huge Duke controllers)! PS4 is on the cards for Red Dead Redemption 2 though...

Thank you for the settings recommendation. I realise I'll need to be playing with quite a lot of that stuff to get it all sorted for my preferences.

They all keep jumping around on it, I assume just so they can then do an even bigger price drop and show it as a higher percentage drop on the advert.

The price I got it at is lower than the one you found and were going to go through John Lewis with? Try the price match with Richer Sounds - whilst I don't have experience with them other than buying this just yesterday, they do seem to have a good rep for warranty and general smooth-to-deal-with-ness.

I use the "Day" settings as I have children, so rarely able to have a dark lounge for viewing. Lamp will always be on at least, find they work very well.

Xbox One S is good due to having a 4K Bluray, plus being part of preview program I have access to better audio. Should be released to all soon. Guess you'll have to wait for the new PS4 as their pro doesn't have a 4K bluray player, it's definitely worth considering console options as standard 4K bluray players are £200+ anyway.

It's only been 4 weeks since I got my KS7000, spent a ruddy fortune on 4K Blurays. Waiting for Pacific Rim and Great Gatsby to arrive. Some of them though, really does add so much more to your enjoyment of the movie.

Wow that's a collection of 4k in that amount of time.... I have got 10 I think, been very selective when it comes to buying these as a lot don't offer a great improvement.

For your budget the samsung probably is the best you can get, clearly there are better tv's but at that price point KS7000 is the best out there.

Yeah i've gone a bit "mad", granted the only ones i've bought new which wern't discounted were Deadpool and Goodfellas (Both at £19.99). Otherwise they've been heavily discounted, second hand on eBay or second hand on forums. Still, it's allot.

I'd agree, some aren't as impressive as others. I'm a bit of a sucka for a bargain though.

I'd say the only thing better than a KS7000 is the LG OLED B6. I got my 55 KS7000 for £850 after discount, B6 is around £1700. Double the price.. I'd also argue the differences are pretty small (Plus pos and negs on either side), the LG OLEDs actually lost out pretty significantly against the Samsung KS range on a public shootout for HDR. SDR though, i'd give it to LG. While pretty inaccurate all those shootouts have been, i'd probably put them on a par with each other with HDR content after i demo'd both. Also it's really the E6 which is the showstopper (Despite LG saying the panels aren't different) it's been quite clear in comparisons that the E6 is the better set just from a picture quality perspective - it's also bloody expensive!

I think the 2018/2019 OLEDs are going to be the real stars. It'll be 1-2 years with other manufacturers using the panels, so costs will be driven down. Any motion or clipping issues will be resolved for OLED. Definitely going to consider an OLED the latter part of 2018 or beginning of 2019.

Got it up and running (incredibly easy to do) and went straight for the latest Grand Tour episode. Looked ludicrously clear - I think it's one of the very few times where I've sworn just because the image looked so good!

And then I realised it was showing as in 1080p not 4k...had a Google around, and there seem to be a lot of reported issues with Amazon streaming in 1080p and not 4k, with no means to force it to do so. Any tips?

There are two versions of Grand Tour on Amazon Video, one is normal and other is the 4K Ultra one. If you search you'll find both. You'll know if it's receiving HDR as the backlit in your settings will goto 20.

You'll also find plenty of HDR content to try it out on the inbuilt YouTube app, just search HDR on YouTube.

it's 8 bit with dither see my post above about what dithering is. it's basically a way of simulating 10 bit through processing or image manipulation but it's not true 10 bit.

the only 10 bit LCD LG make is this

LG 65UH950V

the UH950V range which starts at £2K

I think you are wrong m8,

the LG - 60UH850V is indeed a 10 bit pannel confirmed , in several places including av forums ?

I can use mine on sky q silver with the 10 bit option selected.

"Hi there ****
Thank you for your email.
I would like to apologise for the delay in my response.
Due to a large amount of incoming emails, we are suffering from a slight backlog, which we are working on clearing as quickly as we can.

In regards to this, your Television doesn't have an 8-bit Panel.
The UH850 range does in fact have a 10-bit Panel, meaning it's much higher quality than our 8-bit TV's.

Unfortunately, we are still awaiting Sky to implement our Magic Remote's software to their Sky Q boxes, which we do not have any information on when this will be done at this stage.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused by this.

Should you need any more assistance, you can reply to this email by clicking the additional questions link at the bottom of this email.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards
Ben

It can accept a 10bit signal - it uses an 8bit + FRC panel. It's not a "true" 10bit panel

It's been discussed several times on AVForums, allot of people pretty annoyed at LG due to them misleading customers stating on some of their regions that it's 10bit when it isn't. Several places have confirmed it.

From waht i undersdtand the us pannel is different fromt eh eu one, for those saying its an 8 bit pannel have more people confirming it is indeed a 10 bit pannel, it comes down to false advertisement as it is advertised several places apparently as 10 bit.

another one of the formentioned av forums.

Good Morning, you're through to Scott. Following this chat there is a short survey that will allow you to rate me personally today and the service I have provided. We appreciate all feedback given. How can I help you today?

Damon Smith hi scott
Damon Smith i sound like some mental person, but im constantly wondering if my tv is as advertised, i have the 49UH850v and believed it to be a 10 bit panel tv, however i keep reading conflicted reports, of people in the states saying Lg usa have said their uh8500 model is an 8 bit with 2 bit dithering, can you please clarify once and for all what this tv model has ?
LG Support I can confirm this is a full 10 bit pannel, any of our super uhd range have a 10 bit pannel.
Damon Smith is there any proof of this? is there any way i can check myself without opening the tv? i am sorry for being so annoying but i really want this to be the real deal.
LG Support no there is no way to check yourself, as it would void your warranty, a lot of customers provide false information online, some due to brand loyalty to another company and some because the are unaware of the correct information.
Damon Smith so it is 100% genuine 10 bit panel? no dithering at all to simulate 10 bit?
LG Support that is correct
Damon Smith ok, well as you work for Lg i will take your word as gospel, thanks for the help
LG Support your welcome *****, Is there anything else I can do today?
Damon Smith no thats all thank you.
LG Support Thank you for your query today, if you do have any furter concerns or wish for additional information please feel free to get back in contact.

I dunno and i was told by soemone unless your pannel is indded a 10 bit it will nto connect to the new consoles using the 10 bit option nor sky ?

I dunno lol

Definitely 8bit plus dithering, that's why it can take a 10bit signal from SkyQ

What do you think is more likely. The LG support representative sat in some basement answering online web chat requests knows the difference between an 8bit panel with FRC and true 10bit and that LG decided to put a much more expensive 10bit panel in their cheaper range of TVs purely in the UK. Or perhaps more realistically, LG labelled an 8 bit panel with FRC as 10bit...

You're being a bit selective with your AVForum quotes, allot of pretty frustrated people at how misleading LG have been... If you look at many display spec sites, they have it listed as 8bit plus FRC.

Save creating another thread, does anyone know if the Samsung KS8000 stand swivels?

The ks7000 has a branch feet design and I noticed the ks8000 has a different stand.

Thanks

Not sure mate, I know a few people who got the KS7000 bought an alternative stand from Richersounds. Believe they sell a generic one which will fit it.
