Its worth saying the dude is Swedish, living in UK. Inside the artic circle, parts of the country have 24hr darkness in winter so Im surprised his skin isnt fully see through lol. PC is so dull quite often

I don't get why people complain to the world about being offended, you can just not watch it? If people stop watching, the show dies off.

You can't have free speech and then expect to be able to silence people who don't agree with you. Or have a different kind of humour. It's not like he is on the street hate preaching.

Agreed. We seem to be living at a time where some people are just waiting to get offended by something. Why, like you say, can't these people just stop watching, change the channel or turn the page and get on with life. But no, everything has to stop and offense needs to be promulgated and admonished. Ridiculous. It takes a lot to make me cry. When I see something that offends me, I'll think about it for a few minutes and then get over it and get on with my life.

He's not racist. If you follow his content it's really pretty obvious that it was a joke through and through.

I personally think it's pretty hilarious that they were actually stupid enough to go through with it.

Has Political Correctness Gone Mad?

Thursday 9pm - 10pm Channel 4

Documentary in which writer, broadcaster and former politician Trevor Phillips argues that liberalism and fear of offending minorities is stifling legitimate debate, and in his view led to Brexit and the rise of populist leaders such as Nigel Farage and Donald Trump. Phillips believes that Britain is in danger of failing the so-called acid test of a democracy - whether it truly encourages the airing of differing opinions, whatever they may be, and in his opinion liberals need to recognise that the price of real progress may be learning to live with offence.

Yes but feelings bro.

My favourite is the UK BLM movement. I checked out some of their stuff when they were lying in the road at Heathrow and almost none of them were black, just people being prats issall. No life losers seeking justification for their pathetic existence really. I love a bit of dark humour myself and that's all it is: humour. If people get offended, I either wind them up even more because I'm also a bit of a narcissist and it's fun, or ignore them. Get a life ffs.

Again, free speech does not apply in these cases - Youtube/Disney/whomever have every right to to censor it if it goes against their interests.. and as Youtube makes its revenue primarily from ads, they really cannot take that stance.

I am normally a grumpy git who hates all these young internet celebrities but Pewdiepie actually makes me laugh and as much as I want to dislike him I cant.

He's commented on this whole thing in a mature and respectable manner.

We've all been guilty of making silly comments and I defend this guy.

Well, brand image goes without saying. Disney and the like are fairly conservative and will drop at the slightest hint of controversy. It doesn't matter to them if your preferred poison is ironic Nazism or waving your willy around for all the internet to see -- you should know the public implications of what you are doing and the service terms of your income streams; they don't have to link their image to your expression. Being legal individuals in their own right, it's well within their freedom of speech to criticise your actions and disassociate themselves from what they find offensive to their values/customers/T&Cs, etc.

As for the wider media reaction, it's predictable, but not entirely unfair. Consider the following: Is there a difference in effect between evil by chance and by design? Can you tell the two apart? PDD clearly hasn't wrestled with this ethical dilemma! To illustrate:

1) A dyed in the wool neo-Nazi commands his followers to go out and kerb-stomp a rabbi; violence occurs and a person is hurt.
2) PDD has a brain-fart online; a follower of (1) has an irony bypass (or thinks it's a wink-wink, nudge-nudge dog whistle), kerb-stomps a rabbi; violence occurs and a person is hurt.

What good is it to the injured party or society at large that PDD didn't really mean it? None.
Does ironic hate speech strip hate speech of its symbolism and reduce hatred? Debatable.

I don't think his usual defence of 'mah comedy needs this' will stand up on this. He might as well take a dump in a corner and call it a postmodern critique of liberalism; that's about the depth of his stunt. :p

This stupid irrational fear that people will group together and be so easily influenced because naughty words daren't be said needs to end for the sake of Free Speech.

The reality is the people who were going to say these things are only emboldened by it being prohibited and they end up clumping up, eventually figuring out how to say the exact same hatred but in a non-prohibited, but much more disastrous way.

But since we now live in the era where you basically have to ditch your phone to enter the United "bastion of liberty" States, it's too late.

Exactly this....

I find his humor banal. But he can be interesting when he stops being childish and talks seriously about something. Hes admitted he took a pathetic joke too far. I don't anyone really thought anymore of it that.

Whats interesting is how the main stream media attacked him, in such a crude way. Some have suggested it was to create noise to drown some other stories.

Slightly off topic, but it still irks me to see the term "liberal" applied to people who are opposed to free speech ("you can't say that, it might offend someone", etc). Free speech is supposed to be one of the core components of liberalism. I wonder if it's worth trying to reclaim the word, or if we should just declare ourselves "classical liberals" to differentiate ourselves from the numpties.

h3h3's video response.

That's really all that needs to be said.

That said regarding Disney; I can understand why they had to drop him. It's political bull, but you can't expect to exclaim death to all Jews and then promptly follow with songs from Frozen.

Try free speech on this or any forum and see how far you get.

We have free speech only to a point.
