UK plans age verification for porn websites from 2018

I agree. I also doubt that they are as ignorant and incompetent as they're pretending to be. I think they know exactly what they're doing. None of their domestic policies regarding the internet make sense for the purposes they state the policies are for, but they all make sense for the purpose of creating an increasingly authoritarian state.

By creating a distraction for Brexit?

By creating a distraction for Brexit?

Maybe that too, but I think that their goal is an authoritarian state. Brexit was obviously necessary for that and gives them the opportunity to make progress towards it that would otherwise have been illegal under EU laws, but I don't think Brexit is the main issue for them other than in that sense.

I'm not against the principle as I think porn can be quite damaging physically and mentally to people of all ages if they become addicted to it or it's their only source of sexual pleasure but this enforcement method is terrible and will never work.

I absolutely hate pr0n with a passion, but I think you're being a prude. A lot of my classmates accessed pr0n and that was early days of the 'Tinternet. If people want to watch pr0n, then let them be. It's their business, not ours or the state.

What's 'pr0n'? Some bizarre South African fetish porn involving crustaceans?

I remember them passing around VHS back in the mid 90s for those who got sick of the magazines. Thing is though that is the problem with the UK. There is never a balance, it is either all or nothing.

How is it being a prude? Porn has changed massively in 20 years, back then it was a couple of actors having sex poorly on a potato pixel camera, now you have access to millions of videos in glorious detail with just about any fetish you can make up.

There's studies showing the negative effects it has, it's nothing to do with being prudish.

Lowers population tho, worth it.

Don't see a problem with this.

depends how it is implemented, there are plenty of legit privacy reasons why people wouldn't want their personal details to be stored by porno sites - especially given how naff lots of far more mainstream businesses are at securing personal data

on the other hand if there is a situation like with some mobile providers whereby you need to confirm you're over 18 and want to visit restricted content - IIRC O2 is like this, then you get the restriction lifted in general - perhaps if the bill payer of a broadband contract could do the same they could simply keep unlocked/unblocked internet for that household - though that might not fit the purpose of this legislation which is perhaps more concerned with policing what individual users are allowed to see

personally I don't like the idea in principle of parts of the internet being blocked by default

What about the problems with teenagers and their phones creating all their own porn?

"Complete back catalogue of PornHub, every video downloaded as of June 2017, get your pornhub library here..."

Aren't people just going to get scammed now by fake sites coming up saying you won't be charged and then charging you? I mean who's going to call their credit card company to dispute it?

But yes yes think of the children. I can see a few posts here that want the government to parent their children because you allowed your child to have a computer/tablet unsupervised and with no parental controls. Maybe sit down with your kids and have sex ed with them. But hey wouldn't want your kids to go blind now doing things that will send them to hell.

"Get your fat clubber hand out the way ange"....... kudos to anyone who knows where thats from. God thats mentally scarring yet the most hilarious thing ever

Standard Western values. Watching two people have sex, age verification via credit card required. Watching people get blown up or murdered might require a tick box saying user is over 18 but aren't really bothered about that on the whole.

This is actually scarily true....im sure they wont block live leak which means anything is fine except nobbing videos
