help with choosing smaller case

OK, some basic stats regarding your present setup compared to an example case/cooler (purely for you to consider if this is the route you would like to pursue):

The bequiet 280 is 1.6Kg as opposed to the Noctua NH-U14S which is only 935g

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Your present bequiet 900 case weighs a whopping 14.4Kg where as the Corsair 400Q Midi (which is still a silent design) weighs a mere 8.2Kg in comparison - even with dampening materials (ANd should be slim enough to fit on your desk):

My basket at Overclockers UK:

This would be an overall weight loss of ~6.87Kg - which is a considerable amount.

I realise you have 7700K which is a toasty CPU - but the Noctua should keep things relatively chilly and silent.

Again this is just an example/option for you to consider - you may prefer moving to a 240 rad to allow top of case venting in the smaller midi cases...

what would be better for temps a 240 aio or air
From review there's not much in it - but obviously very dependent on internals of case and case fans/placement.

The Noctua D15 for example is comparable to top end AIOs - but is only 0.3Kg lighter. But the NH-U14S is still a great performer with a single fan setup - clicky - shows performance against a Corsair H110.

seems good, how does the case compare, not worried about the odd and only 1 ssd will be going in it
I personally think it's a great case - and reviews well - clicky

I like air for silence and their less prone to breaking down/maintenance - but the other option would be 140mm AIO venting out the back (similar in weight to Noctua - lighter as acts as vent fan although you could do push/pull). I would perhaps add an additional front fan depending on your setup - and the speed you run the fans.

Plus, you would still be retaining the essence of your previous case - silence with ability to still keep things relatively frosty.

thanks how about the d15, it may only be a tad lighter but the case makes the biggest difference
The D15 is the Daddy of them all.

There would be obvious gains and suspect you would feel more comfortable with its marginal performance boost over the U14S. It's the go to air cooler if you want the best.

It's still lighter than your 280 AIO and as you say the case has the most impact on weight.

I would read a few reviews and get a feel for what you feel best suits your needs as i'm aware i've steered you towards a totally different setup - so would be happier in the knowledge that you felt confident in the direction we appear to be heading :)

I've reverted back to quality air and not regretted it - i have the Thermalright SilverArrow, which is very similar in performance, and build to that of the D15 in Fractal Design case.

for fans what about

front 3x 120 (in)
top 1x 140(ex)
rear 1x 120 (ex)

I would start off with 2 at the front and one at the rear - adjusting front fan speeds as required - and see how it performs. If you still feel you would benefit from more fans i would add them then. Reason for this is because as soon as you remove the top cover from the case you negate a lot of the silence capability (although i appreciate this isn't of such importance to you now)

if the d15 fits I think it'll be that in the corsair

According to spec you should have 5mm to spare.
