Looking for a PC build please

hmm...not sure now...with the budget rapidly approaching £1500, that's 1080ti territory... (as i said, price creep...lol :D)

Thanks Tamzzy, looks like a good build, but I think Ryzen 7 is better for me over GTX 1080Ti as even 8GB GPU exceeds my needs really.

I think we've reached a build I am really happy with, just can't decide between B350 and X370 boards tbh

If OCUK are happy to overclock the 1800X with a B350 board then no reason not to do that. Obviously if you were doing a self build you wouldn't have the peace of mind of a system warranty. So if something does go amiss then you just get on the phone to ocuk for them to sort it out rather than having the headache yourself.

if GPU less of an issue then probably better to get the best gaming CPU currently...
take home from all this is, there's more than one way to skin a cat

Haha yeah realised that a while back which is why I am draining the knowledge from you guys! :D

Ah back to the 8700k, I'm comfortable with that. It was the 6 cores v 8 cores that was throwing me.

Should I go with the 3200MHz DDR4 as I think the 8700k supports a max of 2666MHz

Cheers

You can run 4000MHz+ Ram on CoffeeLake, but 3000MHz or 3200MHz usually gives the best price/performance unless a higher spec kit is on offer.

well pros of the 8700k is that it's the best gaming cpu currently, and can do 4.9ghz (mostly)
for older, less threaded games, (and mostly newer, partially threaded games) due to it's clockspeed and ipc advantage, is better than the ryzen
despite having 2c4t less than ryzen.

cons of 8700k is that it's a dead end platform, so when you want to upgrade, its a full platform upgrade

whereas, the ryzen 1700/1800x, whilst not as good as the 8700k currently, will most likely age like fine wine (imo).

Should I go with the 3200MHz DDR4
yes. see @lee32uk 's post above

Thanks Orbitalwalsh, I think I'm happier with the 8700k and 1070 Ti even though it's an extra £400. It's still under budget.

We've had a role reversal... this chain started with Tamzzy advocating AMD and you advocating the Intel options haha. Seems to further evidence it's not just personal allegiance to a vendor, so really appreciating the thoroughness.

Cheers

Thanks both, hopefully the last 'tweak' question... is that RAM a better choice than the '8Pack Edition' stuff?

If you are not going to overclock the ram then the Team Group is fine. Pretty sure that any Ram will run at it's rated speed on CoffeeLake.

Have you seen the cost of .G Sync monitor... Have a look and then weep at your wallet hahaha

I hit 3600hz with i5 8400 others hit higher, then 8700k hit 4000+ easily enough

Sorry did I hear OP mention £400 under budget... 1080Ti man... Man up and slap that £400 on the table ;)

Helped spec a £4.5k pc... I don't no which got me writing more , this thread or that one hahah

Ah the £400 was ref to the £1000 build. At £1450 I am still under my £1500 budget/preference. Not enough for 1080 Ti and doubt I really need it :D

Appreciating the time input although I'm not quite at 5,000+ posts yet haha

Is that due to going Intel? or cos of the chosen board? (or both!) I am still considering monitors so if the choice would cause a significant cost increase on monitor I'd revert back the Ryzen build if it fixes it

basically at the high end, radeon gpus are not competitive at all.

the 1070ti sits in between the vega 56 and vega 64.
the vega 56 is £100 more expensive than the 1070ti whilst being slower lol (partially due to cryptocurrency mining craze)

no. its the GPU. nvidia = gysnc. Radeon = freesync.
ah that'd make more sense... oops. So I could still use the monitors we discussed at the start of this thread?

mainly for AMD cards but nothing stopping nvidia cards using it - though i think my friend was limited to 60hz at 1440p which is fine for a gtx 1070.
Basically needing to go gsync if I am looking at going above 1440p? or higher than 60Hz ?
