NEW Pay-by-mile car insurance

Bigger brakes probably means more chance of being rear ended by people who have crap brakes :p

But yea, makes no sense. How is a car more dangerous if it can stop quicker?

Assume Telemetry does not change the the insurance cost??? would be no go for me as I take Zee for 3-4am B road fun rides. One of 2 reasons I actually own a car haha.

Correct, we only use the miles you drive to determine your monthly premium, not the way you drive them.

Other rhing. So if its lets say 200 pound standing charge, so You pay that up front right ?? Then every month You get a bill for How many miles Yu done on that month or how does it work ??

Yup, you pay the annual cost upfront to cover your car while it's parked against risks like theft, accidental damage, break-ins and vandalism. The per-mile rate then covers you while driving and that's paid monthly - like a mobile phone bill.

Like last weekend took Zee for drive to Wales and back for... Fish and chips at the beach 7 hours of driving for 3 hours stay haha. So that was 310 miles trip in 1 day,
How does it work in situations like that ??

310 miles in one day would be eligible for our capped mileage discount. We'll never charge you for 150 miles a day, so anything over that in a day is free. Equally, if you drive over 10,000 miles in a year, we'd never charge you for more than that either.

I'll quote churchill who refused to insure my "grooved" disks.

"If your car requires better breaking that means you are driving too fast so we cannot insure that, it is on our banned modifications list"

They jump to conclusions or are just clueless. This is why I don't go with the big insurers. Greenlight actually know what I'm talking about when I phone up to declare mods. As long as it's not something crazy they charge no extra.

I mean...if your changing an exhaust on a car you might as well fit a stainless steel one, because then you won't need to do it again. Yet most insurers will assume this is somehow going to turn the car in to a race car :p

hmm, reading this thread, no one has said about what you get with this insurance company ?
like with mine, i do like 6-8K a year a year, fully comp, with extras (legal cover, no clams protection etc etc) and i pay £250 a year

while we use the last few (speed, acceleration and smoothness of braking) to improve our product, to help learn more about how accidents occur and make the roads safer.

That sounds awfully like you collect the data to be sold or shared with other companies as I don't see how you as an insurance company can make the roads safer.

I'd never have a black box in my personal car, bad enough having one in the company car. I've also never been able to get a straight answer on whether the data collected is shared with other insurance companies.

If you'd accept something simple like an mot certificate then I'd be interested but the tracking nonsense needs to be rejected by consumers.

I'm nopt sure about all this 'Paranoia' about Black boxes.
As I see it if driving way does not affect Insurance premium as stated by Donnie here It can be GOOD for you if You dont have dash cam and someone will crash in to You.

Lets say You are driving down to Morrisons to grab pint of milk 30mph. Some idiot will crash in to you one way opr the other. You ring Insurance company and they got proof that You been driving in speed limit ect.

If You are afraid of being TRACKED maybe start from throwin Your's smartphone out ???

@ShiWarrior
all depends on individual case. Like In Paulinas case she goes from 1100/year to 380/year dont think she will be drifting 5 door fiestawith toddler in car :D

Out of interest, would any of you higher mileage drivers be interested in an all-you-can-drive policy if you were able to use tools in the app?
No, in a word.

If it's unlimited miles then the box serves no purpose for you except data harvesting.

Any tools available in the app will almost certainly be available in other apps like Torque Pro with a regular Bluetooth obd reader that isn't collecting the data to analyse/sell.

Out of interest, what do you use the OBD-II socket for at the moment? We offer a range of tools in the app, but we're always looking to add more - so let us know what you'd want to use it for!

Diagnostics mainly. For example last month I ran the wifes Jeep Grand Cherokee for about 50 miles as I changed the transmission fluid & i wanted to monitor the gearbox temperature as the fluid level has to be checked at 25c and 90c with it being an Auto.

I can understand your concern, and 'black box' policies historically don't have a great reputation.

All I can say is that we definitely won't be selling your information with any third parties, especially not without your express permission. Any driving data is used exclusively for maintaining your policy, improving our product and making the roads safer (from helping work out where, how and why accidents happen in general, through to letting us know if you've been in an accident so we can get you help right away).

Thanks. The diagnostic tool we've been working on is relatively simple at the moment (it reads your car's fault codes), but we'd like to make it more sophisticated in the future so you'd get access to more detailed insights about your car as part of the standard app when you start a policy with us.

Difference with a dashcam is your in full control of the data. You can also turn off the GPS on a phone.

By being tracked etc, your giving an unknown party data they can potentially use against you. Legally or illegally.

Booo

Why can't we cover you at the moment?

Your car's a beauty, but we can't insure you on it yet.

Why bother? Just integrate closely with someone who already does this well, like Carista.

I really appreciate all of your honest and thorough feedback though. We can't improve the service without knowing how drivers actually feel about it.

If there was an option to turn off this "superfluously collected data" I think people would be a lot happier.

Pace ward were the opposite! Ceramic discs?! Sweet, lets knock 100 quid off your policy :D

Doesn't mean they don't know, it does mean the company doesn't care for it.

They don't have to insure everything so anything which is not normal for them goes in the bin.

Leaves a market for companies who want to do the sums for modified cars that the big insurers won't so no loss.
