What film did you watch last night?

Hereditary, strange one this as the first three quarters of the movie was very good with great acting and music, really good stuff. The last 10 minutes however was complete nonsense, real shame . If you watch it turn it off at the end and draw your own conclusions :D

I sort of agree with this post; they could have also trimmed the movie a little - the scene where the mum was begging the husband to throw the book on the fire went on for ages, so much so the Mrs pipes up "ffs throw the book!"

Also, the effects, especially with the flies from the attic, what was all that about, it looked liked 70's effects where the flies were superimposed from another movie, looked really crap and took us out of the moment. Also with the dad and the flames - not very impressive effects.

There were a few creepy parts near the end ie body in the rafters and the attic headbanging - seriously creepy, but the smiling ghosts, headless floating bodies etc, just wtf? Really spoiled it for me.

There have been many, many, movies where the goal of the evil spirit is to possess a human form, so I thought it was a great idea that the baddies actually won, but now i see why they haven't done it in the past; the actual execution looks pretty crap.

Trim it down, sort of the floating bodies and effects and i think it could have been a much better movie.

7/10 or if they sort out the above, could easily be a 8/10

The Handmaiden - 8/10.

Great film. Park Chan-Wook is one of my favourite directors these days, and the visuals are amazing. Not one to watch with the parents however... !

The Death of Stalin - 10/10

Second viewing. Loads of little quips I'd forgotten about or possibly missed first time around. "Slim Hitler" lol. So damn funny.

Mr Holmes - a sad film about Sherlock starting with dementia and trying to remember his last case of thirty years ago I don't know why but it didn't seem to work for me, good performances and all. 3/5

Extinction

As 'budget' sci-fi films go, I thought it was pretty good, even if the kids were annoying (but then they always are).

6.5/10

Tell Me How I Die

Watched this because of a Youtuber my missus and I like was in it. Typically full of paradoxes as any time related films are, and super budget, but still better than the average SyFy offering.

4/10

Pretty silly, a little stupid, but still quite entertaining, good chemistry between the cast, and all the attempt-at-Jerry scenes were good fun.

6/10

Alpha (2018) - 7/10

The story is simple and everything in it has been done before, but the scenery and cinematography in this film is superb, with awe-inspiring vistas and stunning creatures and weather effects.

It is a bit unbelievable at times and turns into a collection of scenes rather than a film towards the end, but it is still enjoyable to watch and has a good ending.

Christopher Robin (2018) - 6/10

A charming coming of age story let down by its slow pace and depressing style. I

t takes a long time to get good, but eventually the heartwarming story comes to fruition and you learn the moral of the story.

Good acting and lovable characters, but the film could have been a lot more fun and interesting.

Ghostbusters, the rebooted one

Watched with my son, 8. I actually thought it was really quite good. Nothing like as bad as the controversy suggested.

Antagonist was a bit crap but, otherwise , pretty great fun. Wasn't sure about all the cameos: only a couple of them seemed to really fit, but was good to see all the main, still-alive, players from the original.

Also watched Land of the Lost. Much funnier then I expected. Liked it.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist 7.5/10

About a successful Pakistani man on Wall Street and the impact on his life and his subsequent decisions after 9/11.

I thought it was very engaging, even though it was apparently a box office flop.

Raw

Been looking forward to seeing this for a while. Didn't disappoint. Visceral in all the appropriate moments and has a lot to say about growing up. Not necessarily for the squeamish though...

Icarus

Found it utterly engaging. Starts as one thing which in and of itself would have been interesting enough as a documentary but then morphs into something SOOO much bigger. Not amazingly well put together and there where certainly better documentaries up for the Oscar, but none with such appealing subject matter.

Stop At Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story

Tried to watch with a fairly unbiased view of Mr Armstrong. By the halfway mark there's not much case left for him. Utterly fraudulent, hack piece of **** who toyed with the hearts and minds of millions to get rich.

Also watched a bunch of films about the annual Crossfit championships. Really great stuff but the titles are too overblown for me to remember atm xD

Adrift
It was a very well done movie and a good telling of a true story I felt. The impact of the reality of the situation was well delivered. Needed to watch something funny afterward though :p

Hereditary 4/10
Absolute garbage
Heh, I watched that in bigscreen VR with a few other guys a couple of nights ago. I can see why it's marmite.

It's a slow builder. On one hand, I liked that it didn't rush and let things develop. On the other, I wished it would get going :D I felt like it was constantly trolling with the music that suggested **** was about to go down and then didn't.

While it definitely did have some good moments, I think it dropped the ball and got a little silly and overly weird at the end.

I wouldn't say it's garbage, but it's a difficult one to recommend.

Upgrade.

It's the future, and to the surprise of absolutely no-one it looks almost exactly like Bladerunner!

Some dude loses his wife when their car crashes and a bunch of villains turn up to fill them with bullets for no apparent reason. When he wakes up he discovers his arms and legs don't work anymore. A nice young man from a mysterious techno-corp offers to help, and he accepts.

The nice young man gives the dude a super-overlocked CPU, which is implanted into his elbow so it can bridge the gap between his spinal column and his cerebral cortex. This not only restores his arms and legs, but also turns him into an unstoppable one man army (for reasons that are never made clear).

Since the dude has promised not to tell anyone about the CPU, he pretends to be stuck in his wheelchair while secretly investigating his wife's murder. Shenanigans ensue, and the police grow suspicious.

Eventually the cops catch up to him, but by this time he's slaughtered a few thousand people in his hunt for that one guy who shot his wife. Then everything gets a bit weird, and the movie ends.

Upgrade was chucked together by a bunch of people you've never heard of before, and filmed in Australia amidst the less scenic areas of a random Melbourne suburb for the mindbogglingly pitiful sum of just $5 million. Despite this, it looks and sounds like a top tier Hollywood production.

When the trailer was first released, many critics said 'Oh no, not another one of those dreadful Douglas Embry movies!' They're not saying that anymore.

I rate Upgrade at 29.97 on the Haglee Scale, which works out as an exceptional 9/10 on IMDB.

Downsizing

Been looking forward to seeing this for a while - Do yourself a favour... Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!
It was a great idea, but the story went in a totally weird direction. It was as if I watched a different film in the first hour to the last.

2/10 - I need 2 hours of my life back
