Nasty Gal ad banned over "underweight" model

What happened to BLM? People ignored them, game over. Same with "cultural appropriation" - also dead.

(This isn't an invitation to start a 15 page long debate trawling tbrough obscure university sites, twitter posts and random blogs for evidence to the contrary, I cba engaging in that, if you can't find a mainstream source for any of this don't bother as nobody reads those crap little microsites other than the idiots they are written for)

Just look at the OP, is the BBC website not mainstream?

BLM is still alive and well as is "cultural appropriation" FWIW.

edit - in fact it is nearly Halloween, I can almost guarantee that some mainstream news sites will have a cultural appropriation story to report on at the end of the month.

:D

Actually I held a door open for a young lady recently at work who commented that just because she's a lady doesn't mean she's incapable of holding a door open. So I shut the door in her face and walked off. Ain't nobody got time fo' dat retarded rubbish.

The correct response in a situation like that is...

"I didn't hold the door because you are a Lady, I held it because I am a Gentleman."

Except it isn't though, is it?

Look at these crap sites:

There's an opinion piece at the bottom from the BBC, which is to be expected from them, but none of it is proper mainstream media. It's all microcosm, throw-away-clickbait sites visited only by idiots. You were spot on for the halloween guess though, it's even there on the Metro!

On second thoughts these sites may be credible sources in certain circles but for me at least this is bottom-of-the-barrel rubbish, and I suspect the same for most folks older than 18 and with more than two brain cells.

This is close to my usual response but this particular case was clearly out for blood, it was written all over her. Is it wrong to say that I smirked afterwards? In fact I'm smirking now just thinking about it :D

Cheating a bit. The next result is the FT, and on the main google page, rather than the news feed, there are results from the Guardian, Independent, Washington Post and The Atlantic on page 1

The point is that if I didn't frequent GD none of this crap would even exist in my world. It's only because of people posting about it that I learn about it, and I frequent quite a few sites. We just seem to have a small collection of those people here for some reason

The only person bringing crap sites into this is you, it is a bit of a straw man argument, we can revisit this at Halloween if you like. It isn't a guess it is one of the main reasons for cultural appropriation stories, they've certainly not gone away.

edit - in fact you're deliberately being disingenuous re your own screen shot - the independent, yahoo, metro are all mainstream news sites too and teen vogue + people.com aren't exactly an obscure magazines either (both with 7 figure circulation figures) - granted they're not serious news sites but they're pretty mainstream. I don't think you've demonstrated much there.

Of the 8 sites linked to only two in that screen shot (fashion.ie and American Thinker) are perhaps less commonly known.

He's cherry picking to suit an argument he's come up with regards to crap sites, google news shows recent news thus he's opted for that rather than the main search results. If he performed the same search at the end of this month he'll find mainstream news sites covering the inevitable Halloween fall out from someone wearing Indian headdress etc..

I only bring these up because certain people seem to consider them credible sources. Let's be honest, none of this is front page stuff, most of it is opinion pieces or blog posts, regardless of the banner at the top of the site. You know just as well as I do that this is the case, and by repeating this endless drivel all we're doing is pushing it closer and closer to the front page, by which point the damage is irreversible. If everyone just ignored them and let them bleat in their echo chambers with their fellow idiots then this would cease to exist rather quickly although it's starting to look more and more like we're past the point of no return.

I disagree with that for the reason already given, they're mostly proactive and the stuff they are reacting to is often quite ordinary things not stuff that people have done to deliberately offend them or cause a reaction. If you don't like hearing about them then just read some other threads, some people find them amusing.

Likewise this thread isn't about some people complaining but some people complaining and having a real world impact, the advert got pulled. In the wider sense if anything people not having a discussion about that, refraining from criticising it and just ignoring it, not reporting on it/leaving it unchecked just makes it easier to happen. If bad ideas, decisions are exposed they're open to criticism.

Let's be honest, the best thing that could've come from this is that whoever answered the phone said "hi, nobody cares about your opinion, ktnxbai" but that would've been lapped up and blown up in to all sorts of funky shapes. I often just want to troll the everliving hell out of these people. Maybe I should start a ******* account.

I think the suggestion that "cultural appropriation" and the like doesn't matter and should just be ignored just plays into those hands who are pushing these sort of things as it gives them free reign to manipulate public opinion without challenge. Business is particularly quick to bend to their will if they think they may be targeted, you only need to look at the "coolest monkey" debacle to see how fringe opinion can impact the consumer world. Celebrities (influencers) are also quick to apologise over this kind of stuff and that also plays into their hands. All that is largely due to the silent majority not speaking out against it (either that or they actually agree with it!).

Lol this is so true. 75% of my outrage comes from reading crap here. I am actually saddened to think how much nicer my life would be minus everyday casual hatred of things. Everything boils down to information overload.

Totally agree.

GD seems to exist as this separate entity where a small group of people get together to complain about things and annoy one another in this perpetually endless cycle of misery.

Saying that, it's likely the same on most forums. Just these endless echo chambers of people spewing bile about women, fat people, immigrants etc. Not too say that there's not good discussions to be found, of course there is, but it's quickly lost to the void.

People who complain about the rise of 'absolute' and 'reactionary' culture on the left and right need only look at this thread for examples of why it's happened. Very little nuanced discussion, just dude's throwing about insults and judging others based on there appearance with little to no consideration given to the MANY experiences that may have influenced it.

I struggle to get outraged by anything posted in GD any more. I think I've smacked my face with my palm enough times already that the remaining few brain cells are there purely for basic motor functions to keep me alive, like breathing, and pressing F5 on the odd occasion.

It's like an internet car crash, isn't it? You know you don't want to see it, every single cell of your body is burning telling you to stay the hell away, yet that one little curious brain cell screams louder than the rest and ten minutes later you're stuck with three tabs open: Cat videos on Youtube, Mumsnet and GD, wondering where the hell you went wrong in life to deserve this irresistible fate.

LOL, dooo it! :)

Though, given your previous POV isn't that even worse? I mean at least if it is mocked in GD then it is just exposed to the people on these forums, if the diddums trolling account becomes successful though retweets etc.. you could end up spreading it far and wide... IMO this would be fine, great even, as you're mocking it but it seems to run a bit counter to what you were saying before.

If I were a trump card and someone called "consistency", you'd have to stand up and walk away as it'd be game over.
